NoFo Tomatoes Are Ripe and Ready...

At least at Rottkamp's Fox Hollow Farm...went to pick up corn yesterday and they had several tables full with signs that read, "Our Own Tomatoes." They are gorgeous and absolutely delicious! Not sure but other farms might have theirs ready as well.

  1. Thanks for the info, I got some good ones from them last season. With Davis not far away, I'll be there next week for sure...

Seems to me that, just like the breed of corn they grow is different than most, so are their tomatoes...many of them have a "point" on the end that I have not seen elsewhere and they are a very deep red color even though they are firm and not over-ripe at all. I got back from Charleston not long ago and had been eating the same SC tomatoes that were at the stands up here and while they were good they simply cannot compare to these.

    2. Did any of the women working there smile? I got a some corn that was delicious. Grow my own tomatoes and cukes.

Hey I've got them to smile for me! It does take a lot of schmoozing though.

Do not ask them if they get their corn from Harbes!!

Hah! And don't mention Schmitt's either - they'll turn up their nose and say, "That's a different breed of corn, not ours!" It's best they think you are loyal to them and don't even know other NoFo farms exist. And for those who might not know, they take cash, no debits, forget credits; they add it up by hand with a pencil in a notebook, and there is a sign on the register saying you should count your change right away or you are out of luck. Which is hard since you have no receipt and have no idea what you were just charged unless you can do the math in your head for the corn and whatever else you just bought (corn is easy, it's by the ear; they don't always say how much the tomatoes they just weighed cost you, just write it in their notebook). They're original, you have to give them that. Oh, and they are closed on Wednesdays in case someone doesn't know. And don't expect to find bunches of fresh basil or mozzarella either. Just sayin'...

Ah, now I see where you guys are messing up.....they really are the king of corn as far as I'm concerned. I would never buy mine anywhere else.

And they are always closed Tuesday and Weds, because they are major wholesalers of corn to local restaurants and fellow farm stands; so they concentrate on that midweek.

I stopped at Rottkamps for corn and maters last year, after reading about how unfriendly they were, and they couldn’t have been nicer.

They are very friendly. They just don't smile!!! Since I dress like a tourist they assume that until they realize I am their neighbor. Ms. R actually laughed at me Sunday because I was wearing a Brooklyn T shirt.

I know what you mean! I got razzed once at Skippers for wearing an Easthampton T shirt. Once they found out we lived on the north side, all was fine. I try not to wear shirts with sayings on them anymore ;-)

I am going by today wearing my I heart Harbes T shirt!

Take a photo of their faces, please!

          3. what are they charging a Lb for the red vine ripened berries?
