San Antonio Review - Lots of Disapointment

Boudros / Mi Tierra / La Gloria / Acenar / Tycoon Flats / Dough Reviewed

Boudros.

We stopped here for a quick drink and dessert for the kids. My wife ordered the Prickly Pear Margarita. The 'rita was a lackluster, unimaginative frozen margarita with not much flavor. It seemed as if they added some tequila to a pear tasting frozen slurry.
I ordered their version of a long island iced tea, however, it never made it to the table. The waiter forgot it and got caught up with a guacamole tableside service.
Their tableside chips and salsa were terrible. The chips were stale and the salsa was nothing more than canned, pureed tomatoes.
I would not recommend this as part of your visit.

La Gloria

Excellent Tacos Al Pator, molcajete with Arachera en Adobo (skirt steak), Pollo Negro Panucho and Chips with their two homemade salsas. Everything was very good, the two table salsas were delicious. The corn tortillas were very fresh and delicious. The skirt steak was perfectly cooked and excellently flavored. The Al pastor had that wonderful crunch and flavor you would expect. IF you want good Mexican street food this is the place. By far, our best dining experience in San Antonio. Only ding I could give is The fruit filled margarita La Cantrina is underwhelming and overpriced and the chips/salsa are not free.

Acenar

Menu is OVERWHELMING. Way too many choices and the servers push the most expensive dishes. The server said choose Especialides de la casa if you want a chef prepared meal. So, all the other food was prepared by whom? Weird.

I was talked into the “Cabrito en Chile Ancho / Baby Goat 25.50”. HUGE disappointment the flavor was good but it was a huge ripoff. The plate is piled on one side with cartilage and bone and very little meat. I would guess I had 2-3oz total. For 25.50 they should be ashamed. I informed the server and he just stared at me as if I spoke in a different language. On the other hand, the non-chef prepared Enchiladas Verdes were good. The enchiladas had a nice crunch and the verde was above average. Their award winning Margarita was disappointing and too sweet with little tequila in it.

Also, the place is getting old. The outdoor seating felt a bit dirty and the chairs were cracking and the tables rocked because they were uneven.

Mi Tierra

Really cool atmosphere and VERY crowded. Negro Model on tap was nice. Again, the Margarita was very standard and boring. Nothing original too it and not much tequila in the drink.

Enchildas verde for the kids was good but not better than Acenar.
Chips and salsa was good.
Homemade flour tortillas were nice.
The fajita plate was not what we expected. The chicken was not on a “hot plate” and it did not include peppers and onions. The rice and beans were good not great.

Overall, it felt like place to see, have a drink, maybe buy a pastry but the food was average.

Dough Pizzeria.

Very popular place that is thriving from the Triple D experience.
Prices are CRAZY expensive. 25 dollars for a wood fired pizza for 1 is steep. Can’t fault them for taking advantage of the fame.

The borata bar was impressive and the borata we ordered was house made and very rich and tasty. The accompanying flat bread was different enough from the pizza dough to offer a nice accompaniment to the creamy cheese.
The pizzas had that traditional wood fired taste and were not overcooked.
The Italian wines by the glass were very good and the server was very knowledgeable.

Tycoon Flats

Really fun outdoor patio space which would be a lot of fun in the happy hour / evening hours. Service was a little slow.
Read a review that they nickel and dime you. That wasn’t the case with us, every single upcharge was clearly laid out in the menu and explained by our server.

First, the el diablo Margarita… WOW! Excellent and spicy. Muddled jalapeno, a nice repasado tequila and fresh lime juice made this the best ‘rita we had in san Antonio.
Nachos and salsa were good.
The burger was cooked to nice medium, a very good ½ pound of meat. The fries were excellent and the onion rings were clearly hand cut and battered – delicious.

  1. So basically you liked the non-touristy places (Dough/La Gloria), not so much the touristy ones. No big shocker. FYI, prices at Dough didn't change much after DDD. You must be a big eater, the $20+ pizzas are plenty for two, especially if you had apps, I eat the small ones for lunch. It's all about the quality of ingredients there. When's the last time they picked basil fresh off the plant for your pizza?

    1. Inquiring minds must know: What made the enchilada crunchy at Acenar?

      Also, I love cabrito and have fond memories of the plate I had roughly 30 years ago at Mi Tierra and so I'm just inexplicably sad that you had bad cabrito in a town that knows how to do it right.

        lol I was thinking the same thing, why would an enchilada be crunchy? It's not supposed to be.

          Some restaurants will fry the enchilda before its baked. When this is done, the enchilda has a bit more of crunch under the sauce. At acenar, that was what we tasted.

            That is.. not what I would've expected. Like, deep fried? I mean, when I make enchiladas I soften the tortillas in hot oil or lard, but to get them crispy just isn't done.

            I'm not saying it's probably not tasty, but this is so new to me that I'm baffled.

        2. I understand why visitors staying at the downtown hotels keep posting requests here for "good ___ on the riverwalk". Kudos to you for making it out a bit further, wish you'd have looked further into the Southtown/Pearl (besides LaGloria) places. I agree with saeyedoc's response in re. Dough. I will take visitors to Mi Tierra if they insist, but always with the "prepare to be disappointed" caveat. Was never impressed with Acenar or Boudro much, and haven't been to TF.
