Meeting a friend or two at Rinaldi's for lunch tomorrow. Just wanted to know if there are any specialties I should order. Hot or cold? They wouldn't slice their turkey from real birds, would they? Do they do a meatball sub that is special?

  1. Ladies with knives say pastrami

    1. Rinaldi's lunch today. Ordered the "Mike's" something, hot pastrami, roast beef, cheddar with lettuce, tomato and onion. Not impressed. Meat was dry. Bread was mediocre, no real crust or chew and yet not soft, just sort of crumbly. Not as much meat as Bay Cities and not half as much as Eastside Deli Market. Service was very pleasant. Should have gone with meatballs or chicken or eggplant parm, so there would have been tomato sauce. Or maybe just go to Big Mike's up the street for the very reliable and big philly cheesesteak.

Even if the sandwich was assembled by Baby Jesus himself, the combination of pastrami, lettuce and cheddar makes me shudder.

Yeah, I'll admit not the wisest order. But even if I changed, the bread quality and meat quantity would probably remain the same. I just had heard so much good about Rinaldi's over the years and i was a bit disappointed.

Makes that too ten list look even worse if that is at all possible.

in the years my daughter went to school in el segundo, we ended up at rinaldi's sometimes.

i am always mystified that so many hounds speak of it as though it's a destination sandwich shop.
i always felt that if you like sandwiches, and you happen to find yourself hungry and in el segundo, it is ok enough, no more than that.

              nosh, your experience mirrors mine.

I have to agree. (Wait, did i just say agree?). I've always felt that what you get at rinaldi's is no better than going to Ralph's, picking up some boars head meats and some cheese, and doing it yourself. The bread is.... Well....unremarkable. Unless you're going to go for one of the specials, it's hardly worth the trip up the street for me. Turkey meatball sandwich is just "ok" but that's what I usually get.

That said, there are far worse choices for a submarine sammy. In a wide area of boring sub sandwich chains, rinaldi's does at least stand out - albeit marginally.
