  1. Servorg is a food Einstein…. and Kevin just makes me smile.

    1. Westsidegal. When I was doing a job in LA a couple years ago. I was turned onto Sergio's cooking. Enough said. I'll be back.

      1. TonyC. I appreciate his passion.

        1. Chandavkl - he has been to more chinese restaurants than all of us combined ;-)

Ipsedixit - has recommended places and food that satisfied my curiosity

J.L.- I just like to read J.L.'s posts

          Exilekiss- didn't we all?

Oh, I miss exilekiss's posts so much.... ::sigh::

          2. I tend to agree with westsidegal & Maudie, for the most part

High praise, indeed. I am flattered. Interesting that I was also just about to mention WSG as one whose posts I always follow and respect.

                1. re: budlit

i agree. two people i read a lot....

                2. man we have a great group. just look at the number of posts compared to SF or NY. I really appreciate the fine tips (shunji, for example) and the regular laughs, and the different personalities and different areas of expertise...it's nice to have friends that have something in common, chowing...

                  1. Mostly like to read all but don't always agree. Just don't always agree with negative verbal bantering. We all don't have to agree. Love to find place all over.

                    1. there are so many that i follow.
some i follow because we are generally in agreement
others i follow because they are "reverse indicators" and i can be pretty sure that if they don't like i a place i will like it.

i follow anyone who is thoughtful, posts about westside restaurants, and has a sensitive palate (which doesn't necessarily mean that they agree with me).

also, i miss kevin because of his VORACIOUS CURIOSITY about restaurants and food!

Kevin is a good guy, he is kein'ing missed. There are other posts that use vulgarity (not my style) but the powers that be seem to have singled him out. Now probably me.

                        1. re: Thor123

yeah unclear why he got singled out. bum steer.

                        2. re: westsidegal

... as well as his liberal use of the question mark??????????

                          1. re: J.L.

And for the joie de vivre that came through in his posts.

He is, but he got pulled for a bit. Seems to be back, huzzah : )

                          2. Anyone who posts photos of the food...because the photos can speak for themselves.

can you put a *NSFW* tag next time? thanks.

I'm still laughing on the inside at the over-the-top grilled cheese advert wienermobile posted recently. Demon child + oozing cheese...YES.

                                1. Maudie mostly. She has similar tastes to mine and if she likes a place, I've either been or want to go.

                                  Thanks!

                                  1. I'm not naming names since you can check my profile for that. But as a former, long-time CHer just returning after a couple years off CH, I follow those who provide really thoughtful, informative & balanced reviews (whether I agree or not). =)

Welcome back! I'm another old-schooler (different nom de net back then) who somewhat recently re-upped. Always nice to see people come back from hiatus.

And I like the thoughtful, informative reviews, too, especially the ones I disagree with -- it encourages me to keep a more open mind.

                                      1. re: spoonlicker

Thank you...and to you as well. Now I'm curious what your old name was. I hope to figure it out after reading some of your input!

                                    2. I like chowhounds LA in general; It's my main source for restaurant reviews and opinions. When a restaurant I visited isn't covered on CH, I'm happy to contribute. Reading all the different posts has given me such an education and perspective on food and restaurants.

I'm just glad there is a place where people like Chandavkl can inform us of new chinese restaurants and give some historical perspective on Chinese food in LA. Or the cantankerous Mr. Taster bringing East Coast perspective on foods like bagels and thin crust pizza. I love our LA versions, but when I hit NYC, I will be sure to try their versions. Or Porthos giving us a world-wide perspective on the sushi world. BigMista and Prof Salt have educated me on the world of BBQ. And so on.

But it's not just them, they're just examples of how great this site is. If I profess an opinion and someone else slams me for it, I could run and hide, or I could learn whether there's better out there, or they're just full of it. Either way, it's an education. I know what I like, but there are "likes" I don't know about yet.

                                      1. Ditto to all the lists of great CHs. Thanks for all your helpful recs...because of you, I've eaten very well for the greater part of the last decade.

I was thinking back to my early days here at CH a decade-plus ago, and I'm now recalling that this place is what hipped me to taco trucks before taco trucks became a "thing."

...Which sounds terribly taco-hipster-ish ("I knew them way back when, maaaan.") but is really meant to be a thank-you to our taco-fiending pioneer 'hounds.

                                        2. I miss Mollyomormom who would go on these all night binges and report, bite for bite. Also, because she's in my hood, her local knowledge helped a lot (she was the first to steer us to the bacon maple scones at Huckleberry, I believe - now difficult to imagine a time when they didn't exist).

And I miss Kevin, not just because he made the place more lively, but because he asked questions I didn't even know I had, like where the best Dive Bars are.

Ah, thanks. When I was on more frequently a few years ago, a few CHers (from other boards) died due to age, illness, etc. This is a nice community and a combination of factors (including those deaths) lead me to take a break.

Anyway, I'm glad he left due to exile instead of the other. Maybe the mods will let him back after a good timeout.

                                                1. re: OCAnn

I think his temp-ban from about a month ago *was* the timeout you're referring to.

We don't normally talk about these things publicly, but since it's come up quite a few times, we wanted to note that Kevin's account is only temporarily suspended and it's up to him when he wants to return.

Edited to add: this team post kind of dragged this whole thread off-topic into discussing Kevin's situation publicly, which is something we're not all that comfortable with. We've removed the follow-up here, but we'll send some people who had concerns replies by email.

                                              2. Servorg, because Servorg. (Even though tonight, we have issues.)

WildSwede, because we agree about most things. Likewise TonyC.

kevin, though I cringe at his (seriously, gigabytes a day!) wasting of bandwidth with question marks and LMGTFY moments. I wonder, how much bandwidth does each question mark consume?

                                                ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

BTW, "dope" as an adjective went out with the Authentic Cafe. ;-)

                                                But seriously: kevin.

ipsedixit, because while I disagree with him about almost everything gastronomically (de gustibus...), like all evil geniuses, his knowledge is encyclopedic. His posts are Hemingwayesque in their succinctness.

He is this board's Great Foil.

And my new fave? jessejames, because he has good taste (viz. his constant championing of Greenblatt's) and is skilled at toning down a nearly out of control discussion.

Plus, everyone called me "jessejames" in elementary school, and I love that he owns it.

I think that's "firmly in the positive," right? My moral compass has never been very reliable.

I can tell you who I don't like - people who rudely and nastily respond to someone's honest post due to them feeling their taste buds are far superior to everyone else's. THAT pisses me off. What makes one person right and another wrong? Food likes and dislikes are highly subjective and personal. Those people know who they are as I have called them on it.
Other than that, I am cool with pretty much everyone... even Kevin with his gutter mouth!! In fact, it spices the place up, I think! Come back Kevin!
Exilekiss had an eloquent way of writing about things and places that everyone already knew about.

But there are a handful or people who either live in my area or spend a lot of time there - westsidegal, wienermobile, Dirtywextraolives, servorg, maudie5 - and I'm always happy to see what they have to say about the new places that are constantly cropping up, or the old favorites.

I also feel we have similar tastes and have been introduced to some great spots in OC because of him (Ramen Zetton, Kasen, and others). I also check his posts on the France and Italy boards when I plan to travel to those countries. Plus he knows his stuff when it comes to Neapolitan pizza!

+1 for Porthos and his reports from New Orleans, Manhattan and San Francisco, among others.

                                                              3. In LA there are so many who have made me happy. Chowhound is the place where I feel normal,. And where I can commune and question.

Specifically? I love Ipsedixit as, I am a small semi-jewish woman who loves dim sum and he has never mocked me, just helped me. (I owe him a homemade challah!)

Mr. Taster - a fab help. Smart and funny and picky - perfect!

Servorg, Porthos, Wildswede, Tony C - they've all held my hand as I've explored this town.

Can't forget westsidegal as, I no longer live on the west side, but often travel there to meet friends and she keeps me in the practical know.

Love weinermobile as his tastes seem to match mine and there's the bonus of an unexpected link to my husband.

Kevin. He is silly, joyous and naughty. But he truly has such passion for the foods of LA, I can forgive his wording.

Lastly, to all the hounds I have not listed, but I know have helped me at one time or another. And I hope I have helped back. This is a great community and one I am proud and lucky to be a part of.

                                                                1. I have to mention how much I look forward to reading Ciao Bob's posts.

                                                                                Mr Taster

It was the OJ (Original Jerome) who pointed out to me that someone else was using his handle.

                                                                                    1. re: WildSwede

In the days before Chowhound handles were registered to a specific account, it seems like that could have been a legitimate problem. Still, I never knew about that. This was in the pre-CNET days, right? Or is this person still around? I know Jerome still occasionally posts, so I assume the false prophet is no more.

                                                                                      Mr Taster

The way it stands now if someone mentions an OC place someone from LA makes disparaging remarks about food in OC.

                                                                                    1. re: HBGigi

I would certainly follow an OC board - I live in Pasadena, but I visit the OC several times a month and almost always get a bite while I'm there. So far, I've been sticking to Vietnamese and Korean food (with the occasional German at Jagerhaus). I'd love to hear from locals about their finds.

                                                                                  2. I live several thousand miles away but I miss Kevin and LA Buckeye fan, Christa. I was following westsidegal and then there was an oral comment and I'm hooked. I don't follow ipsefilet-o-fish because he has too many followers and I don't bandwagon plus he's everywhere. Edit, I like you ipse.

He has quite the talent for unusual and colorful metaphors. I also like chandavkl's posts because he seems to be able to manipulate the space-time continuum such that he's almost always present when a new restaurant opens.

Only one small correction (I know Wayne would have/wants me to chime in here). His car was named Herman. I'm sure many people know that Wayne and I became good friends, all because of CH. We spoke at least once a week by phone and were constantly trading email back and forth. I still miss him terribly. His absence has made this world a much poorer place for me.

You can read just one of Wayne's many, many classic posts here http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/5041... and Herman is mentioned.

                                                                                                          1. re: Servorg

His writing style is reminiscent of John Kennedy Toole in Confederacy of Dunces.

                                                                                                            1. re: lil mikey

I somehow missed it the first time around, and am grinning ear to ear as I read it now (weird: I accidentally typed that as "eat" instead of "read". Fitting, though) with my lunch.

I follow WildSwede, who I think lives a parallel life to mine only she is 15 minutes ahead of me and so always has the jump on the best restaurants (we seem to share opinions on so many). ChinoWayne is still in my list (missing you), and exilekiss, who I relied on for Japanese advice. ipsedixit, who I rely on for everything.

Just a quick shoutout to my LA pack of hounds...I probably made the mistake to stumble onto the site talk page...lesson learned: let me say we are lucky to have such a great group and even when we have disagreements things are generally civil and informative and rarely unfriendly. Hope we can keep our ball rolling. very much appreciate your posts and friendly replies when seeking help or tips, and noting the kindness you bestow upon tourists and travelers...keep it up.
