Cherry Picking?

  • 4

Anyone ever try cherry picking locally? I saw some emails about availability this weekend. Is it tasty? Is it fun for little ones? We usually do strawberry, peaches, apples, pears, and plums. I find the raspberry penalties (thorns) a little to high to make it worth the trip for us.

  1. The cherry picking window is closing fast.
I have six trees and I picked the last of them this past weekend.
If there are any places that still have them available the end is near.

Ditto the window closing, it is a short season. Maybe try http://www.farmfresh.org/food/pickyou.... I know that one of our local orchards has no sour cherries this year because of the cold spring.

Smolak in N. Andover says they have them but their self-picking season is over.

    2. It's so much fun, and especially delicious! Way easier than strawberries, lower than most apples, and no sharp thorns to dodge. I got 10 pounds last weekend in about an hour, who knows how many I ate, and I hope to go once more (but I'm in DC, not Boston. Here the farmer told me the season might last 2 more weekends). There were lots of little ones around helping pick cherries. The one thing I found was that, if they're sweet cherries, you really have to be careful to only pick the ones that come off very easily. If you have to pull at all, they're not ripe enough and not as tasty. I haven't picked tart baking cherries before, I don't know if it's the same for those.
