oyster lead

  • 6

Does anyone know where I can buy an oyster lead? I bought my last one at that little hardware store near the corner of S. Claiborne and Napoleon, but it (and the store) disappeared under the mountain of debris after Katrina and afterwards I just treated myself to oyster bars. But I relocated to NC last year and after paying exorbitant prices for a dozen up here I have decided that next season I will do my own shucking. Problem is, nobody up here has a clue what I am talking about when I ask for an oyster lead. My hand/eye coordination is not what it used to be and I am unwilling to bleed to death for the sake of a mollusk. (Yes, I know many of you will consider that the gravest of heresies, but . . .) I will be in town for a very brief visit in early fall, and if someone could point me in the right direction it would save me a lot of time searching. Thanks!

  1. I haven't used one in years but you might try Harry's Ace Hardware 504-896-1500. failing that I'd call someone like Cooter Brown's or Felix and ask them where they get them..not that they wear out.

    1. Try Alario Bros. in Westwego..504 341 1843>>

      1. Caire Restaurant Supply at 4815 Conti. I just got one there recently.

        1. Followup: I went to Caire yesterday. The leads are just as you enter the showroom and are $21.50.

          1. Marlin Marine in Houma, La. They have a webb site.

            1. If you will be in the Quarter, Mary's Hardware in the 700 block of Rampart also has them and they are $29. Saw them about 3 days ago.
