  • y

This is Costco Thread for the 3rd Quarter of 2014 for Ontario. Discuss new food related products (food/kitchen supplies/cookbooks/etc).

Please provide the location if you found a new product or an item on clearance as pricing and product selection can vary by store location.
This is the 1st Quarter of 2014 thread:

This is the 2nd Quarter of 2014 thread:
Some general useful info.

Prices ending in 97 cents usually means the item has been marked down

Items with an asterix in the upper right hand corner means that they aren't being re-stocked again (although, sometimes they will introduce new packaging for the same item but it has a different SKU, or it may come back if it is seasonal)

  1. Saw the Kirkland Branded Truffles for 8.97 today at Etobicoke.
Also worth noting was the 3$ off for the Balderson 4 year old (a steal at this price) 10.99 for 500 g!
Picked up a box Aprium (Black Velvet Apricots) as well hmm not as impressed as reported by others in another thread.

I think you must have gotten the same harvest as me. Last year I felt the Black Velvet apriums were wonderful and worthy of the premium. This year, they didn't live up to my memory. I found the New Jersey blueberries at Costco far more flavourful and delightful. A steal at $3.89 for nearly 2 lbs.

Nothing really new or exciting to report this week except I did see an authentic LeCrueset 7 L oval Dutch oven in the orange flame ombré colour for $249. I prefer the Kirkland one for less than half the price but I do know that LC has a brand name cache.

The Kirkland brand dried blueberries are in new packaging and with a much better ingredient list. The new one is composed of blueberries, sugar, and citric acid. The old one had maltose, glucose fructose, and two types of preservatives. Definitely an improvement with no change in price or size.

Oh, with the heat rising, some may enjoy the $3.50 off the Haagen Dazs ice cream bars with chopped almonds. Also I think they may have lowered the prices on the 3pints of HD gelato

    2. European smoked salmon is about $15/lb. It is a box of Norwegian Atlantic salmon, processed in Holland, in individual packets.
Pre-cooked lobster meat was in the same freezer, similar price.
Kirkland frozen pizza (5 cheese, 4 x 12") has been bumped up to $10.99, still a good deal.
Fresh boneless leg of lamb (Australian) bumped to $7.00/lb but still one of the nicest available.
Kefir, 2 litres/$6.00, is irresistible to me.
Sealtest unsalted butter, at $3.69/lb, is better than I expected. Good price.
      Shopped at London North.

What does you use the Kefir for?

I just bought a jug, and plan on using it for making ice cream and soda bread as a substitute for buttermilk. Just trying to see what are some other possibilities?

        1. re: asagiri

I won't be much help, but your ideas are good. Maybe a ranch type dressing, or a substitute for milk on oatmeal porridge, with a pat of butter. I do that to avoid sugar.
Mostly I just drink a glass with a meal, instead of white wine or tomato juice.

      2. I usually shop at the warden location. I've been on the lookout for the jar of antipasto for over a month now. I think it's $10 . . . Can't remember the brand. Has anyone seen it anywhere else? I also haven't seen the Maille Dijon mustard for a long time, but finally got some at the billy bishop location today.
I love reading the costco thread . . . Makes me feel like I'm not the only one who might be obsessed with shopping there! :)

        1. re: chuang

Pretty sure I saw the Maille Dijon at RH store recently.

          1. re: chuang

The antipasto usually comes back around Thanksgiving, I think.

            1. re: chuang

Just in case anyone else is interested, the "Something Special" antipasto (940 g for $9.49) is back at the warden location!

            2. RE: Kirkland Generic and/or Splenda large box
Haven't posted here before so not sure I'm doing this right. This is the only place that seems to take any sort of message.

Anyway, haven't been able to find the large box of either Splenda or Kirkland generic packets. Anyone seen them or have new about them. Have tried Mississauga, Burlington and Brampton stores but no luck.

              1. re: O2ADDICT

I could be wrong, but I think I read on the FB page it was discontinued. Haven't seen them in Newmarket either.

                1. re: O2ADDICT

I haven't seen Splenda but I did see large box of Equal

                  1. re: O2ADDICT

It's possible some sweeteners have been replaced by Pure Via Stevia packets.

I bought 800g (a box of 800 packets) for $17 plus tax at London North. I returned the box because I didn't like the metallic aftertaste but YMMV. Stevia leaves have the same aftertaste.

                    1. re: jayt90

I bought a small package of via stevia before committing to the Costco size. Too metallic for my liking. I wished I had bought the Kirkland splenda. :(

                  2. Nevy
I've been looking everywhere for your swoon worthy pecorino. Can you please let me know where you found it. I know it may be too late but I was on vacation.
And thanks for your always awesome reports.

Bought it at Vaughan location on Monday. Excellent!

                      1. re: Mila

Picked it up last week from the Billy Bishop location

                        1. re: Mila

I've managed to spot this at Etobicoke and Mississauga North. I think the Etobicoke is selling out faster cause I only saw one box left.

I'm currently in Shanghai so I'm not sure if either location still have it this week but last week, they did!

                          1. re: Nevy

Thanks all. I checked Kingston, Scarborough and Billy (checked twice there). Will go west tomorrow.

                        2. I saw tree ripened mangoes from Israel at billy bishop this morning. $16.99 a box...it had a nice floral smell but didn't get any. Wondering if it's any good.

                          1. Plenty of pecornino in the dundas/dixie location. And organic strawberries… 2lb box for 4.99 I think. Going back for more as I know this won't last. Wish Costco would regularly carry more organic produce.

                            1. Is everyone out of country too? The thread is quite quiet! I'm back from my 4th trek out to Asia and I've restocked my fridge. I was really surprised to see Halloween items on the shelves! The wonderful thing I saw was the plentiful amount of Canadian fresh fruit and vegetables!

                              New items this week

                              GH Cretor's Organic salted popped Popcorn, 340 g - $5.39

Stonemill Bakehouse Organic Ciabatta (freezer), 12 - $7.99

So Delicious Coconut Almond ice cream bars, 12 - $11.79. I saw this at Loblaws and I nearly coughed at the price. For 4, it was $7. Definitely a deal if you're not able to eat dairy and want a cold treat.

                              Dorset Cereals Museli, 1 kg - $5.89
                              On Sale

Starbucks Mocha Frappucino, 12x281 ml - $14.99. Great deal btw... I think they're $2 in stores?

Ontario black cherries!, jumbo sized 3 lb, $7.99. They're fantastic. I bought them and I wished I bought another one. Very flavourful and sweet!

Simply Fresh Baby Carrots, Burlington! 5 lb - $4.99. Carrots are carrots but I'm thrilled to see more Canadian produce

Kirkland European chocolate biscuits, 1.4 kg - $14.99. This came out in Christmas and was actually quite tasty. It uses butter (... if my memory serves me right) and had a decent chocolate. It's in a very nice tin.

                              Discontinued Deals

So Delicious Chocolate Coconut milk, 18x240 ml - $14.97

We've been waiting for you, Nevy! Welcome back.

Looking forward to trying the Ontario cherries. The Washington ones were good but nothing beats local produce.

The Dorset muesli intrigued me ... good ingredient list. I might pick up a box for times when I feel too lazy to make granola.

                                1. re: mrsleny

Thank you! If you like local, try to see if yours has the BC blueberries from Driediger farm. I would say they're one of the best tasting blueberries I've had in years and it's not the 'wild' cultivar. BC blueberries are better than the NJ berries and miles better than the sour large grape like ones from CA.

The Dorset muesli did have a good list of ingredients but after my trips out to Asia, I've become used to eating vegetables or fruits and steamed vegetable dim sum in the mornings!

                                  1. re: Nevy

Thanks for the blueberry info! I had picked up a carton of organic blueberries a few weeks but I don't remember where they were from. It was a large carton so I ended up freezing some. They were good but not the best I've had. I will have to look for the BC ones.

Would love to have dim sum for breakfast but not really practical as I usually eat breakfast at work. It's easier to have granola and milk at my desk.

                                2. re: Nevy

The popcorn is great - we've been through a couple of bags already! It's slightly cheaper than the skinny pop bag.
Just wondering if anyone has tried the new bagged salad in the produce section - I think it is lemon kale or something like that?

                                  1. re: chuang

Lemon arugula? I love it but you have to be an arugula fan. It will definitely wake up your taste buds.

                                    1. re: mrsleny

It's the one levy describes below, Tuscan kale with lemon garlic vinaigrette for $6.99. I'm going to add red onion and we'll see at dinner tonight if there are any other additions that seem suitable!
I also saw the wild greens and quinoa one and I'll probably pick that one up to try next time.
And yes, I love arugula, but it certainly is a particular taste.

                                      1. re: chuang

Thanks for clarifying. I assumed it was the boxed salad mixes. I will have to look for the bagged lemon kale next time. I don't tend to browse too long in the refrigerated room as it is usually freezing in there!

                                    2. re: chuang

I just bought my first bag of the GH Cretor Organic Popcorn. It's a bit cheaper, has less fat and a little more salt than Skinnypop. It was good, but I found that it had a few more husks in it. I like the fact that it's organic, however.

                                  2. Has anyone seen La Tourangelle Roasted Walnut Oil this week? I bought it last month at the Newmarket store but it was all gone the other day.

This was sold out in GTA West for a while now... Late May was when I last saw it.

                                      1. re: lilacs_n_summer

It was being cleared at $3.97 in London North in June.
Probably won't be back until this year's walnut crop is processed over winter.

                                      2. I made another dash to Costco this weekend but at the Etobicoke store to restock on a few items I didn't see in Mississauga. Wow, for all those who are looking for summer items (patio, gardening...), discounts galore! Clearly they're making way for back to school, Halloween, and Christmas (yes I said Christmas... they had 2 Christmas decorations up).

                                        New items this week

Two Bite Chocolate drizzled coconut macaroon, 940 g - $8.99. Nut free with toasted coconut. Usually I only see the 2 bite brownies so this was a different

Starr Culinary sliced cake in lemon raspberry, orange cranberry, and lemon poppyseed(?), 1.2 kg - $9.69. I was thinking that pre-sliced cake can't be great as it would normally dry out quickly and require a lot of preservatives to make it stay nice. I took a look at the ingredient list and due date and was pleasantly surprised. Made in Mississauga with a very short due date (first week of August), the ingredient was all in English with items stocked in your pantry.

Fromagerie Bergeron Fresh Cheese Curds, 600 g - $7.99. We grabbed a bag for making poutine with our Quebecois friends. They said it squeaked properly and tasted good! These are made in Quebec.

                                        Casa Italia Pancetta cubes, 2x200 g - $7.99

Lemon Kale salad, USA and MX products, 595 g - $6.99

Wild greens and quinoa salad, USA and MX products, 595 g - $6.99

                                        Organic baby kale - $3.39

                                        Lemony Argula - $3.39

Might Leaf Iced Tea pouches, 3 flavours (150g total) - #13.99. I love this pricey brand for their teas! All organic as well.

Oak Hill Farms Vidalia onion dressing, 2x1.1 L - $6.99

                                        Sunblest Almond Flour, 1.36 g - $22.69

                                        Jerusalem is back

                                        On Sale

                                        Tropicana Tropics blend, 3x1.89 L - $5.99

                                        Tropicana Orange Juice, 4x1.89 L - $9.99

The jelly belly is on sale! If they had removed 'buttered popcorn' out of the mix, I would have bought a bag. I think they keep that flavour to spite me.

                                        Sealtest butter, $2.95

Black diamond aged, normal cheddar, and marble cheddar, 1 kg - $7.99.

Pluots, 4 lb - $6.99. From the US, these fruits arrived back into the store. They're not as pretty as the apriums or red or black velvet type but as long as they're ripe, they can be wonderful tasting. I haven't tried these yet but the price is really good.

Figs, 2 lb - $6.99. US figs (California?) and they're 2 sizes... jumbo with 16 in the container or 24 mid size ones. They're the brown turkey ones (mostly mid green with large splotches of purple). They're not as sweet as the black mission but considering Highland farms was selling 12 mid sized green (kadota?) figs for $8, this was a deal. They're pretty tasty and great in salads.

Ontario yellow plums, 4 lb - No price listed yet (just stocked). If you like tart, these would be up your alley!

Canadian Roma tomatoes, $2.99 (on sale!)

Sweet onions, 3 lb - $5.99 - Not quite vidalia but definitely sweeter than white onions. They're pretty awesome grilled up with a bit of char on chicken burgers.

Champagne grapes, 2 lb - $4.59. I loved these last year as they were bursting with sweet flavour. This year, they're a bit more tart and sour. I'm hoping it's because I bought the first of the season. They're still very flavourful but not overly sweet atm.

Bonne Maman Strawberry Jam, 500 ml - $6.69. This is my favourite jam... pure strawberries, no sugar, fake stuff... made in France. This is a super steal at this price as their small jar (1/3 of the size) in other stores is the same price.

Blacks Cinnamon twists, 426 g - No price as they just opened the box.

Awesome! Good to know there's a home for them ;). I assume you also like the other official popcorn flavour.... I think it's either kettle corn or caramel popcorn.

Anyhow, it's rare to see this go on sale. I think the first time I've seen it in a year.

looks like they finally sourced a quasi-replacement for the superfoods greens mix they discontinued this spring, by carrying the baby kale.

wonder what size the bag is--i've been buying and using straight kale in my morning smoothies ever since they dropped the mix.

cheers for letting us know about this add. . .

The 2 new loose leaf are not in bags but they're in the same style as the baby spinach (plastic tub with resealable pull back top). I'm thinking about 300 g in weight.

                                            2. re: Nevy

Thanks for the update .... too bad the Moov frozen cauliflower is still regular price at RH store. It's so convenient to have in the freezer.

Will have to look for the Bonne Mamon jam next visit.

Are the sweet onions as good as the Mayan ones? Those are fabulous.

                                              1. re: mrsleny

My favourite use for the cauliflower is roasting the and then using it has 'mashed potato' or the best thickener in soups. Much healthier than cream but so much tastier.

The Mayan onions were very sweet... These ones are not as sweet ... If say a happy medium between a normal white and the Mayan.

If you love strawberry jam, I think Bonne Maman is a must try. Definitely one of my favourites. The other being my freshly made jam with Ontario strawberries but that's a days work and nearly triple the price.

                                                1. re: Nevy

the bonne maman jam is so good that we've stopped making our own!

                                                  1. re: Nevy

Thanks Nevy .... you are awesome!

                                              2. just got back from the etobicoke Costco and got:

                                                1) 32 coke zero, $ 8.85, $ 3 off (relatively cool & refreshing for today's heat)

                                                2) Marie Morin Panna Cotta, $ 10, (not bad, could be colder)

                                                3) Kirkland Signature Kale Salad, $ 10 (haven't tried it yet)

The Lasko 20" air circulator for $ 30 looks tempting

                                                1. I picked up Champagne Grapes from the Wilson location. Didn't see much on clearance or new items.
Will try the Scarborough or Etobicoke location next as they seem to have more variety.

Discounts have been super light the past 2 or 3 months because all the summer items were all new but I'm hoping to see them start once August hits with the back to school, fall, and Halloween items start coming in.

I'm hoping some of the snacks survive for some dc pricing. I'm not tempted at regular price to try the sugar peas chips, sweet potato crackers, Sahale nut mix, Haagen Daaz gelato, or organic raspberry lemonade but I'd try them if they're on sale.

                                                    1. re: Nevy

I was at an Ottawa area Costco on the weekend and they were sampling the sweet potato crackers. I will be picking some up on my Costco trip this week, I found them addictive, would be great with dips.
The Sahale mix is also really good and is actually a good deal compared to pricing for the small bags in other stores.

                                                      1. re: cheesymama

They're both a good deal! I've seen the pricing elsewhere and it's at least 150%... It's rare to find these good snacks at a good value. It's more of me justifying... do I need another 2 lbs of snacks on my shelf ;) I only have so much space and stomach room!

Was the sweet potato crackers more savoury or sweet? or even both?

                                                        1. re: Nevy

More savoury, a little on the salty side but that was part of the appeal for me. Definitely not an overwhelming sweet potato flavour. There were 2 bags per box.

                                                  2. bought the chia coconut water popicles this week. umm, different but not bad and half decent trade-off. It's feels healthy so I can live with it but my kids didn't like the chia seeds at all. (But I really wanted the Kirkland premium ice cream...)

                                                    1. Just came back from the Etobicoke Costco. Other than the regular items I saw wagyu from Australia. They had only rib left though after talking to the butcher he said they also carry striplion and it will be a regular item. Well marbled compared to other wagyu I have seen except the one sold at famu. Worth a look.

Cool find! I haven't seen that yet in stores but I see they sell it online in various cuts. I'll have to see if it ever arrives to Mississauga.

                                                        1. re: elvisahmed

Do they mention what grade of Wagyu that is? It looks pretty cheap and not as well marbled as I would think. I recently ordered a side of Canadian Prime, dry aged 60+ days from Famu, and it looks equally marbled and a bit pricier.

                                                          1. re: GeeDee

The leaflet they had in store at Costco says 5 plus.
Famu is hands down my favorite premium priced butcher.
Here is a Wagyu Striploin I bought from Famu I would go as far as saying if I could frame it and hang it in in my living room I would!

                                                            1. re: elvisahmed

Wow, I suppose that makes this find all the more impressive. This was at my local zehrs! Also, since this was taken the quality in marbling has increased.

                                                              1. re: Morelia

Looks great! How much was a piece like that?!

                                                                1. re: GeeDee

Depending on how thick they cut each day I'd say between $40-60 per steak ($59 per lb). I realize that's quite high, but until they started to carry them at zehrs I had to drive 2 hours to shop at famu. Which I've never felt bad about doing, but the savings in gas and time are more than worth it. I'd even be willing to go as far as to say they've matched if not surpassed the quality of waygu at famu.

                                                                  1. re: Morelia

Hmm as for competing with Famu I guess we can have a contest going on here :)
Here is the Wagyu from Japan that I saw there. The marbeling is jaw dropping.

2 Steaks for starters and its Wagyu for crying out loud. One can pay easily 1.5/2X at another butcher or 5X+ at a restaurant.

                                                          2. Back to school season is here! Lunch bags, snack portions of treats, peanut free labeling is popping up in all the sections. I'm quite amused to see all the 'nut free' labeling on things such as cheese strings or chocolate milk tetra pack. You might as well stick 'gluten free' on the plastic forks while they're at it.

                                                            New items this week

Big Red's Bread... red fife flour bread, 2x510 g - $7.99. Red fife flour is one of the new trendy flours but it's actually one of the true Canadian heritage grains from eons ago. I think this is the first time I've ever seen it in a mass market bread product. The bread is GMO free, organic, and says it has ancient grains in it.

Doritos Roulette, 2 large for some really good price that escapes me - I normally would not report on the flavours of the chip multi-deal but I had to on this one as it's amusing. Part of the marketing ploy that Doritos hatched, this bag contains 90% normal cheesy nachos and 10% super hot cheesy chips. The idea is that you don't know which chip is which till you eat it. To a person who eats spice all the time, it has a nice kick but to the unsuspecting individual who can't handle spice (aka my American colleagues), it's a 5 alarm fire. They made it a game to see who will cry first eating the hot chips. It makes for fun times during all day brainstorming sessions.

Campbell Country Kettle soup mixed pack, 8x 398 ml - $9.89

Kirkland brand freshly made kale salad, 800 g - $8.99. I'm not sure if this is new or brought back but I bought it for a BBQ and it was much much better than the refrigerated pre-made ones in the bag. I found this beside the pizza and greek salad in the open air refrigerated section. The very large salad had tons of baby dinosaur kale, 2 types of cabbage (red and the pale green), spanish onions, shredded carrots, shucked edamame, dried cranberries, whole large unsalted cashews, pumpkin seeds, and a white balsamic ginger vinaigrette. Honestly, this was really tasty. They didn't skimp on the kale, edamame, cashes, or cranberries. It had a nice spiced kick with the ginger in the dressing.

La Perla Hazelnut spread and breadstick snack pack, 12x52 g - $9.99. These were really popular when I went to Italy. Instead of the cheez whiz snack packs we find in North America, it seems every kid in Italy had this as their afternoon treat. La Perla hazelnut spread is made in Italy and the ingredient list is MUCH better than the Nutella of US origin. More nuts, less sugar, and higher amounts cocoa powder on the list. Unfortunately, North America is not like Italy where they don't ban the heck out of nuts in the classrooms... so this probably wouldn't go in your kids lunch pack.

Christie Mini Oreo snack packs, 30x42 g - $14.69. More back to school stuff.

Velvet Apriums, 3 lb - $8.99. Cousin to the black velvet apriums, this one is takes on a rosy red hue instead of the burgundy. Last year, I found these to be delicately sweet and not as sugary as the black velvet ones. Personally I liked them better than the black velvet ones... I bought a pack and I'll report back if it's as good as last year.

Nestle favourites 'back to school' or Halloween box, 1.2 kg - $18.99. Mix snacked size Nestle chocolates. Reasonable price compared to retail stores but I do remember seeing this going additional $3.50 off in mid September.

Maynards fun treats, 125 ct, $13.89. Gummy candy for back to school and Halloween... swedish berries, sour kids, and sour cherries are the usual. This is a very good price as I've seen them at $18 elsewhere... I think this goes on sale in late Sept (from my memory of last year) for a few bucks more.

Nutivia organic hemp oil, 710 ml - $7.97

Either way, awesome work. I look forward to your posts every week.

Funny thing is that I never shopped at Costco till last year when I had to prepare for my bathroom renovations. That started my new found love of Costco deals and limited edition products. It was the home aisle (non food products) shopping that was the introductory 'toe dip' that got me going each week to Costco. I saved over $2500 on that reno with all the deals at Costco (vanity, lighting, shelving, fans, blinds, tiles, shower panel...). So yes Kingsway, I definitely keep an eye out for other items :) I just bought a few items (HEAD sharpova tennis racket, FIFA leather soccer ball, grass fertilizer, and bike helmets...) for on average of at least 70% off from retail. I always keep an eye out of the $xx.97 deals!

                                                                  1. re: Nevy

Did Costco have installers or did you have to get them eleswhere?

                                                                    1. re: Herne

I haven't bought an actual service from Costco yet (does tires count?). I will say that Customer Service is ridiculously good. One item arrived broken (shower panel) and even though I returned it 6 weeks after purchasing, they took it back in a flash on behalf the supplier (with a smile too), honoured the original discount, and made the new one delivered to my house in 4 days.

                                                              2. re: Nevy

I wanted to report the Velvet Apriums were quite nice. The flavour is less sweet but far more interesting than last year. It starts sweet with more floral notes(think sweet pineapple and lychee taste) and ends with a tart plum note. I really like it. Great deal! I saw this for $5/lb at a regular store!

                                                                1. re: Nevy

I'm on the look out for the snack packs of Praeventia chocolate cookies, shaped like hearts. I was told they'd be back in stock for back to school, but haven't seen them yet. I'd appreciate if you saw them to post it. Thanks!

:) hopefully it was a light spritz on your iPad. I know allergies are a serious thing (epi pen and all), but I feel the recent labelling is going beyond common sense and just a marketing ploy. Then again, we need to put 'contents are hot' on hot coffee lids.

I haven't seen those cookies in a while... But you're right that they were a school snack staple in the aisles. I'll let you know if I see them. It'll probably turn up beside the Oreos.

                                                                2. For all those who love a great deal and you're in the market for kitchen tools or accessories, this is your week! I made my way down the kitchen and home ware area and I honestly astounded by 2 of the dc items! They're pretty big discounts as they're $60 to $70 more online at costco.ca and upwards to $120 more on The Bay or other sites! Not to create a moment of suspense but I'll detail all the great deals in the usual d/c area of my weekly report (last part)!

I did check to see if Mississauga had any Wagyu beef. They didn't BUT they did have a bunch of USDA Choice cuts which I think is not as good as the Canadian AAA.

                                                                  New items this week

Cascadian Farm organic protein energy bar in Peanut butter chocolate chip, 18 or 900 g - $14.89

                                                                  Furlani's Garlic texas toast, 957 g - $3.99

                                                                  Bulik Bakery Sunflower Rye bread, 2x560 g - $6.29

Black's Family Hot and Spicy Falafel chips, 510 g - $7.49. This grabbed my attention as spicy chips is one of my weakness. This is a corn and garbanzo bean chip. It looks quite good from an ingredient point of view... minimal fillers and it looks to have a decent amount of natural spices instead of natural 'flavour'.

Au petit gouret maple wood smoked bacon, 2x 1kg - $14.99. Made in Quebec this one is a bit different from the other bacon as it's actually smoked compared to 'smoked enhanced flavours'. They claim to use maple wood to do it.

Rice Krispies multi grain shapes, 680 g - $5.99. It comes in the shapes of a flower (or is that a gear), a gingerbread man (looks like a wonky star), a tree (I think), and something that looks like a really phallic looking rocket (the claim it's a fish but .. really!!). The ingredients are corn, wheat, oats, caramel colouring, annato colouring, and natural flavours. eh?

Fat Choy Mooncakes, double yolk white lotus paste pasties, 4 pieces - $10.88. I'm totally amused by this and the pricing. Nice cultural awareness Costco! Moon harvest festival is coming up and this would be a good time to grab these. It's imported in by a BC company and the ingredient list reads quite wholesome (though not so traditional... no lard is in this). It's just lotus seed, sugar, peanut oil, flour, cooked duck yolks, water, egg, citric acid, and some sort or carbonate. The box is nice and sturdy with a magnetic closure.

Sonoma Valley organic ancient grains (millet, quinoa, and amaranth), 1.4 kg - 11.59 on sale

                                                                  Fontaine Sante Spinach dip, 2x420 g - $7.99

Kirkland brand jumbo whole salted and dried almonds, 1.13 kg - $14.99. These are the giant California almonds. They dwarf the name brand ones beside them and they're cheaper. Great deal for snackers.

Fresh figs - I just wanted to let people know that they now have 3 sizes of fresh figs. Ridiculously big (12 for 3 lbs), big (15 for 3 lbs), and normal sized (18).

Korean wontons, giant bag - $3 off

Drumstick ice cream treats - $3 off

Ice cream bars (Nestle?) - $2 off ... suffice to say, they're trying to get you to buy more ice cream treats!

                                                                  Discontinued Deals

Kitchenaid 9 cup food processor in silver - $99.97. Yes, you read that right! I've seen this come and go on occasional sale for an additional $25 off BUT I've never seen it go on d/c pricing. To give you an idea of the deal, I went online and checked other stores. The costco.ca link has this for $150. The Bay has the 7 cup (not 9 cup) for $150 and the 12 cup for $300. I took a look at this item and had it in my cart for a long time. It has the dough attachment, fine mincing attachment, slicing disc, french fry disc, single 'mandolin' attachment, and a small bowl attachment for cases you're not pureeing a giant watermelon or some ungodly amount of coleslaw. I really wanted to buy it!

Food Saver vacuum sealing system - $99.97. Another sweet deal! I haven't seen this on d/c either. Online it's $160-180 in other stores. For those who have a chest freezer, this could be your best friend. I know people who actively use it but they also tend to buy a half a cow from a farm and then cut the entire section into smaller cuts to be used throughout the year. According to them, there is no freezer burn casualty even a year later. Recently I read that grilling steaks from frozen is 'almost' as good as fresh and much better than thawed state. I guess this would help with that!

Pandex 8 piece goblets - $8.97. Colourful goblets for ice cream and shatterproof for kids or adults who are 'challenged' to keeping utensils and kitchenware on tables.

Pandex 16 piece tumblers - $14.97. I'm not sure why they call these tumblers as they're the size of a 7-11 slurpee. Similar to the goblets, they're a rainbow fest of colour.

Over & Back giant porcelain mugs, 6 piece - $9.97. Colourful with polka dots! I'm sensing a theme.

Kirkland brand hard anodized deep saute pan 5.6 L - $24.97. It's a very sturdy pan and I really liked it as it can go from stove top to oven safe up to 400F. There is no screw in sight ... rather it has the very thick rivets that the high end pans usually have. The metal thickness of the pan is impressive. I ended up buying this and I'll report back how it handles on my stove.

Over & back cozumel serving set, 2 - $9.97. I think 'cozumel' is the code word for nacho and salsa serving set. There's a large bowl with an interior smaller bowl in the middle for the salsa/dip. As you can probably surmise... colourful!

Creative ware drink dispenser, 11 L - $12.97. My friend bought this for her church and they think it's fantastic. Instead a bunch of smaller plastic containers or spending an hour in advance pouring drinks, they just mix the drink and place it on the table.

Swiss glacier portable and collapsible 60 can cooler - $24.97. That's a lot of beer...

Nutivia organic hemp oil, 710 ml - $5.97. Yes, they lowered this once again because I honestly think no one knows what to do with this.

                                                                  Happy shopping!

I've used it 4 times now and I feel it's a great value. It's quite large but not too heavy given its size. It's very easy to clean and I really like the high sides on it... Keeps and potential spatter off the stove top. Definitely worth the $25

                                                                      1. re: Nevy

I picked up one of these sauce pans at Warden this morning for $19.97. Probably about 12-15 left in stock. I have already used it and am happy with it. Love the size (just need to figure out where I will store it) and can see it coming in very handy for "one pot" meals.

                                                                  1. Has anyone seen the NESPRESSO VERTUOLINE coffee capsules? I am referring specifically to the Etobicoke or Dixie/Dundas store. I have seen them in the past there but I didn't own the machine then. No luck the last few visits...

                                                                    1. re: Beermonger

I am really surprised. I didn't think they sold any Nespresso pods outside of their boutiques or directly online from Nespresso. I guess they changed their policy with the new machine?

                                                                      1. re: ylsf

Perhaps I am mistaken but I recall remarking to my other half about how colourful the pods or capsules were while in Costco some time back...then we got the machine with a sample of those pods as a gift...great coffee/espresso machine BTW!

                                                                    2. Do Kirkland brand items ever go on sale, besides when they get discontinued?

Anyone know if the Mississauga South store has frozen demi-baguettes? At the Etobicoke store, I only found frozen mini ciabattas.

Any Kirkland products in particular? I buy both the coffee beans and laundry detergent and they both go on sale occasionally.

                                                                        1. re: cheesymama

Well, it's not precisely food-related in the nature of this board, but the dishwasher detergent and toilet paper. Good to know the laundry detergent goes on sale sometimes, thanks.

                                                                        2. re: lsk

They do go on sale but it's considerably more rare ... The Kirkland gourmet jelly beans and balsamic vinaigrette went on sale recently. Usually the price is really good that buying regular price beats any name brand sale item anyhow.

                                                                          1. re: Nevy

Yes, I was checking the price of the toilet paper and the on sale name brand was still more expensive than Kirkland at regular price. I figured if Kirkland does go on sale, then that'd be an even better bargain!

                                                                            1. re: lsk

Has anyone tried the Kirkland Brand toilet paper?

Also, Nevy, where was the Texas garlic toast? In the freezer or in the bakery section?

                                                                              1. re: kwass

                                                                                Don't like the toilet paper.

                                                                                1. re: smfan

Well you could always use the 3 Sea Shells :)

                                                                                  1. re: kwass

The Kirkland toilet paper has a cult following; they sell carloads of it. The rolls are larger than most others. The Costco magazine reported that the product comes from a factory in upstate New York.

                                                                                    1. re: jayt90

How does it compare to Charmin?

                                                                                      1. re: kwass

I saw lots of people buy the Kirkland toilet paper and decided to try it. Not impressed at all. I am staying with Charmin ultra strong.

                                                                                    2. re: kwass

Hi Kwass... You can find the garlic Texas toast in the fresh bakery area.

About the Kirkland TP, it's incredibly affordable, very thin, and probably the least great KB I've tried. I mean it's soft but you don't want it to disintegrate that easily. If it's a touch stronger/durable, I could safely recommend it.

                                                                                      1. re: Nevy

Thanks Nevy. I'll look for the Texas toast when I go next week.

As for the TP, from everyone's description, I think I'll stick with Charmin :)

                                                                              2. Was at Costco (Billy Bishop) the other day and noticed they started selling almond flour for about $25/package (approximately 1.5kg).

                                                                                1. Saw the Stanley thermos ($27.99) at Markham store (Woodbine & 7). Meant to pick up on the way to cash but forgot. It's a great thermos.

Thks for the tip about Stanley thermos. Got one few days ago. Then looked up Amazon reviews which disappointingly was not that encouraging. Most complaints were about not able to keep the content ( esp coffee) hot vs the " old" Stanley ever since production was moved to China. I'm having second thoughts whether to return it.

Has anybody bought & used this 2 quart thermos over the past year?

                                                                                  2. Last time I wrote, I think I mentioned the Halloween items creeping back into the store. Well, this week's trek really surprised me... CHRISTMAS items are back on the shelves. I had to double check my iphone for the date and sure enough, it's still summer!

Sorry Chuang... no heart shaped cookies yet.

                                                                                    New items this week

Woolwich Blueberry Goat log, 454 g - $6.99. This one was completely covered in blueberries... not a dabble but a dark thick purple coating of blueberries. I've had goat cheese yogurt with blueberries and that was awesome so I can imagine this being tasty too.

Arahova Tazatziki dip, 2 bottles 500g each - $ not listed because it just opened. There are two flavours... regular and greek olive. It caught my attention because the packaging and label are so busy (you'll know what I mean if you see it). Ingredient list is all in easy to read English and no apparent preservatives. Is bacterial culture and microbe enzyme considered natural preservatives?

                                                                                    Smithfield bacon 500 g - $4.99

Hillshire farm Deli select cold cuts, 900 g - $11.99

Traeger Wood Pellet smoker/BBQ Grill, 36000 BTUs - $749.99. I don't BBQ that much but this caught my eye as it's not blingy shiny like all the other silver stainless giants in the aisle. This is a dull black because of the cast iron (?) and it looks like a smoker. I looked online out of curiosity and wow, these can be pricey and probably appealing to a BBQ enthusiast. It looks like a 'lil texas elite' model except it has a cabinet area underneath instead of the 4 legs.

Kozy Shack Tapioca Pudding, 12x113 g - $6.59. This is the first time I've seen Tapioca pudding... they have the rice pudding but I guess this is just another addition to the back to school snack option. The big claim on this is no added sugar and only 90 calories. Though they add in surcralose... *eye roll*

Liberte Organic Kefir, 3x454 ml - $9.99. It comes in 3 flavours of raspberry, strawberry, and plain. It's 2% fat so it actually has flavour and doesn't taste like lightly acidic water :)

Famous Amos Chocolate chip cookies, 30x56 g - $10.99. Perhaps I've been living under a rock but I've never heard of them. It looks like it's part of the US Keebler brand?

Rice Krispies Variety pack, 30x22g - $6.99. Another back to school item except instead of the usual plain rice krispies... it can be a confetti explosion or a chocolate chip one.

                                                                                    Kelloggs Pop Tart, 1.2 kg - $5.99.

Kirkland brand Lemon cream cheese crisp tart, 1.3 kg - $7.99 in the fresh bakery area. I'm thinking it's either a lemon flavoured cream cheese interior or a lemon 'something' with cream cheese on top and then covered with a crumble.

Books - All $22.99. I've never seen Ina Garten before so that was kinda nice departure from the trendy Paleo 'Eat like a cro-magnon but only cro-magnons from Europe... ignore the fact your relative might be another region'. Anyhow, these Ina Garten books are normally $40 and selling for a good price of $22.99.

                                                                                    Ina Garten Back to Basics
Ina Garten How simple is that?
                                                                                    Ina Garten Barefoot Contessa Foolproof

                                                                                    On Sale

Fresh wild sockeye salmon - $21.99/kg. This is not the special event but it's in the open seafood cold area. This is only $0.50 more than the farmed Atlantic salmon. I couldn't believe my luck and the quality is still very good. It smells fresh (like the ocean) and the fat is still very opaque white with thin clean white lines. I cut up the salmon filet into 5 pieces (yes it's that large!).

Crunchmasters Rice crackers - $2.50 off ... this maybe no longer on sale at your stores. Think of this as a tasty and gourmet version of the Quarker rice crackers. They're crispier (like the Japanese style) with actual real flavour of either sesame (with actual seeds!) or 4 cheese (with real cheese!)

Mary's Gone Crackers organic & gluten free - $2 off. This is a sesame and rice flour blend. The crunchmaster flavours interested me more so I bought those instead.

Red Rave Energy drink, 24 cans - $3.50 off

Oasis Mixed Variety pack fruit drinks - $2.40 off

Fresh Avocados - $2 off. I'm not sure if this is every store but it was on sale at the one I went to... nice firm large avocados from Peru.

Nestle Drumstick variety pack - $3.50 off

Haagen Daz chocolate almond vanilla bars - $3.50 off

                                                                                    Christine Thinsations, 24x23g - $2 off

Kirkland and Walkers shortbread cookies in the decorative tin, 2.1 kg - $19.99. These are ridiculously buttery and was in stock for last year Christmas. Great treat for those who love shortbread... not so great for people who want to stay thin.

Jones soda, assorted flavours, 12 bottles - $9.99

                                                                                    Saputo Mozzarella 22% MF, 1 kg - $11.89

                                                                                    Lucky Charms snack bar, 24x24g - $7.99

Philippines Brand Mango Nectar, 24x250 ml - $14.99. I haven't seen this for a few months. This is quite sweet but really great tasting. I often use a can when I make mango pudding. Great flavour but it does give a sugar high.

Italian Prunes, USA, 5 lb - $7.99. The label claim their sweet.

Krusteaz Pumpkin Spice baking mix (it looks like a cake mix?), 1.81 kg - $8.99. It makes 4 batches

                                                                                    Krusteaz pancake mix, 4.53 kg - $7.79

                                                                                    Ghirardelli Brownie Mix, 2.26 kg - $8.59

                                                                                    Discontinued Deals

                                                                                    Contigo Shake & Go Tumblers, 3 - $14.97

Christopher ranch peeled garlic, 1.36 kg - $3.97. This is a lot of garlic for such a low price. I can't imagine when someone would need this much fresh peeled garlic. You could freeze it perhaps or make a lot of pesto... that would last you the next 5 years.

Grill mate Heavy duty BBQ cover - $14.97

Grill mate BBQ Brush with 2 replacement stainless steel heads - 7.97

I never get a bad one and once they ripen I put them in the fridge where they last another week at least. I can stretch out a bag for 2 weeks or so.

Will have to look for the Crunchmaster crackers.

                                                                                    2. Found wagyu striploins in Etobicoke today! Pretty good price.

                                                                                      2. A longshot, but has anyone seen the Wild Roots Wholesome Hemp Cereal (Granola) recently? https://mybrands.com/Brands/Wild-Root...

Been searching high and low for this one for a while now since it went OOS at our local costco. If anyone can track it down, I'd be very, very thankful!

They did have another Wildroots Cereal, so perhaps that's what Truffles saw, or maybe they sold out already. In any case, more tips appreciated. Cheers,

                                                                                            2. re: milhuas3

                                                                                              2. Query: has anyone seen any dried wild mushrooms being sold at Costco? I rmb a couple of yrs back, they used to carry dried porcini and a mixed variety, but I haven't seen any in a long while.

                                                                                                    1. re: Nevy

                                                                                                          1. re: Nevy

The BC chanterelle season is fall. If we're lucky we may see them in a month or so!

I found the chanterelle much better flavour than the frozen mushroom mixture. Though the mixture had porcini, it was the minority and the predominant mushroom was the button and baby portobello. It's quite convenient though!

                                                                                                2. They usually say that the CNE marks the end of summer... I may also add that the arrival of entire aisles of Halloween and Christmas items at Costco is another mark of it. Great news for those who are still enjoying summer... they're all going d/c pricing! Grab what you can... even the food items are good till Spring of 2015.

Wagyu steak watch - I finally saw them at the Etobicoke store and wow, they had a huge range from moderately better than AAA (definitely some marbling but I wouldn't call it good) and to some where I'd say it compares to the moderate Wagyu steaks I've had in Australia (Really clear white lines throughout the entire steak). I added some pictures of the better ones... really great price for what it is. It seems the striploin cut was better than the rib eye this time around.

                                                                                                  New items this week

Bob's Red Mill Organic Steel Cut Oats, 3.18 kg - $9.59. FINALLY! I know West Coast had Steel Cut oats forever and all we had was the instant uh... 'oatmeal'. I was thrilled to see Steel Cut oats for once and especially for the price. The organic pricing for about a third of the size is $6. This makes it a huge steal (I was going to say steel but that would be drawing the line on being too punny).

Suzie's organic red palm oil, 1.49 L - $14.99. I have never encountered this before... it looks like a refrigerated Thai red curry made with too much chili oil. I've heard of coconut oil but this solid oil is quite out there.

You can tell it's back to school with the huge amount of 'pre-made' or 'pre-packaged' meals and frozen pizza snack items...

Ocean's Gluten Free Albacore SnacKit, 6x93 g- $7.79. Canned tuna + crackers snacks with a bonus of $2 off. Of course, fully labeled as nut free, gluten free...

Ravioli Gourmet Chicken & Mozzarella ravioli, 1 kg - $10.79 in the fresh refrigerated area

Kirkland 4 Cheese Tortellini, 2x680g - $11.69. I think they only had ravioli last time so this shape is 'new'. Found in the fresh refrigerated area.

Il Pastaio Maffei Strozzapretti, 2x500 g - $4.99. Made in Italy and found in the fresh refrigerated area.

Sum-m Vietnamese Spring Rolls, 1 kg - $9.49. Found in the fresh refrigerated area.

Sum-m Chicken Gyoza, 900g - $8.99. Found in the fresh refrigerated area.

Rotisserie gold BBQ Chicken wings, 2 kg - $23.99. Found in the freezer section

Rotisserie gold Buffalo Chicken wings, 2 kg - $23.99. Found in the freezer section

Pizza Pops Supremo Four Cheese italiano,3 kg - $18.99. Found in the freezer section

Molinaro's Deluxe Pizza, 3x563 g - $14.89 (not sure this is new but it's at least restocked)

Kirkland Pepperoni Pizza, 4x860 g - $15.99 (I dont think this is new but it's made a re-appearance in the freezer section)

Kirkland 4 Cheese Pizza, 4x481 g - $11.99. Found in the freezer section... this wasn't there last week so I'm assuming it's a new or restocked item.

Palermo's Chicken Fajita Pizza, 3x475 g - $12.99. Found in the freezer section

Sunrype Fruit to Go, 72x14 g - $19.99. Comes in strawberry, blueberry, 'wildberry', and strawberry melon. Of course it's nut free and gluten free!

Arahova Tazatiziki - $7.99 (they finally put a price up)

                                                                                                  On Sale

                                                                                                  Gatorade G2 - $4 off

Zima cherry tomato - $1 off (this are so sweet... it's like candy. Great for afternoon snacks for the kids)

Philly Swirl Coconut water and Chia popsicles, 30x48 ml - $3 off

Healthy Choice Greek Yogurt ice treat bars, 11x 80 ml - $7.99

Aquastar Wild Alaskan Cod, 1 kg - $3 off

Ontario Peaches from Fruitland!, 5 lb - $7.99. Finally! Real peaches! Unlike the California monster duds, these Ontario peaches are a tiny bit smaller but they have the hallmark of something good... they smell like ripe peaches. The Cali ones were rock hard and had no smell.

Wildroots Wild Chips Kale and Chia chips, 680 g - $5.99

Motts Fruitsations variety applesauce snack, 36 - $9.89

                                                                                                  Dole Lots of Cherries, 20 - $9.49

Hunts Chocolate pudding snack pack, 36 - $7.99. This is nostalgia for me. Of all the shelf stable chocolate pudding, this one was the best as it was creamy and tasting of chocolate (not just pure sugar).

                                                                                                  Christie Ritz Bits with cheese, 24x50 g - $11.79

                                                                                                  Christie Ritz crackers, 1.5 kg - $8.99

                                                                                                  Cheerios multigrain, 1.2 kg - $8.29

Barkthins Pumpkin seed dark chocolate, 482 g - $9.99. This snacking chocolate is better than the conventional chocolate candy bars. The dark chocolate has a good bitter note and does a nice snap when you try to break it. The pumpkin seeds are a good textural contrast and they also add a savoury note with sea salt to round it out.

I have been mixing PC Steal Cut with 50% Quaker Quick oats (for the creaminess) but I will gladly switch away from Galen, so fickle am I. My favored prep is with a splash of milk, two Costco prunes, and a pat of butter. A savory delight!

                                                                                                    1. re: jayt90

I'm so happy to see this stocked. I bought a bag already and tempted to get more as warm steel cut oatmeal with the Moov wildberries, a dash of Ceylon cinnamon, and the Canadian maple syrup is my winter breakfast. I bought the PC one as well ... Considering it's cheaper and organic, it's great!

The costco prune would be nice in the oatmeal paired with the Sultana raisin they had a while ago. I wish they restocked that.

                                                                                                        1. re: youdonut

I think Nevy mentioned she went to Etobicoke this week. I saw these at the Richmond Hill store.

                                                                                                      3. It is a great time to head to Costco if you're not a weekly shopper... LOTS of deals. Tons of $XX.97 items which includes things like many season food stuff BBQs! Freezies! BBQ Sauce! and non food items like golf shoes, golf umbrellas (2 large ones for $12.97... seriously amazing), tennis rackets, and water wings. Heck, you can even get discounted African Lion safari and ROM tickets in the summer time and they're good for all year! Ok, back to the food stuff before this posting gets slapped by an admin.

Paging CH'er Chuang... Paging CH'er Chuang. Your Praeventia cookies has arrived in school sized snack packs AND on sale ($2 off) this week. You can find them either in your snack aisles near the front cashier (Etobicoke site last week) or in the special event area closer towards the refrigerated area where they usually put all Christmas treats or seasonal items area (this week in Mississauga). The only thing that is different from last season is that it's a mix. It has the chocolate cookies AND an oatmeal one. So... I hope you like both flavours.

I wanted to write some notes on some existing products I had the opportunity to try a bit more (because my snack shelves finally had an opening). I tried the Black's Family Spicy Falafel chips and wow, great texture and flavour. It has the nice crunch of a dorito chip without the heavy oily reside or cheese powder. It is nicely and powerfully spiced. It's not tame... it does remind you a bit of the a falafel but not because the chick peas flavour come out but because of the cumin, paprika, and other spices. It is a bit pricey but one of the better 'gourmet' snacking chips to come out.

I tried the Wild Chips Kale chips in store and this was a bit of a disappointment. It kinda pales in comparison to the Black's Family Falafel chip. It's much thinner (kinda like a no name brand plain potato chip crossed between a plain no name brand tortilla chip), it didn't have a great crunch, and it almost felt underseasoned and no apparent seasoning. It was low on salt to the point where I felt that it was a semi crispy white toast.

                                                                                                        New items this week

Really! I had the whole cashier team in a tizzy because they haven't something so low in a long long time. I bought these cause I figure for $1, I can't lose. This drink says it's super duper healthy with over 2.5 g of Omega 3 in one drink, 25% of your fibre, 10% of calcium, low in sodium, and moderate in sugar. I'm drinking one now and I can say that the chia seeds are kinda like tomato seeds when you bite into a fresh beefsteak tomato. They're there... has texture.. a little too slippery... but really has no density when you try to bite down. The flavour is lightly berry with the smallest smidge of floral notes. If you just told me blackberry flavour only. I'd believe you. Pretty great for only $1.

Organic Cranberry Lemonade 2 large bottles - $1.97. Another great summer steal for days on the patio. I haven't tried it yet but for $1.97. You can't go wrong.

Thanks, I just got back from Costco myself (Warden) and I picked up the praeventia cookies. I've never tried the choc chip cookie before, so I hope the kids like them! Thanks so much for remembering my request!

I forgot to look for bob's steel cut oats, BBQ sauce, and now tennis racquets ....

                                                                                                          1. re: chuang

Aw. Thanks :). I hate when I forget stuff on my list especially when I saw it on sale at costco.ca. I create lists for myself now! Mammon sweet chili pop corners. I can imagine that being great. The Tyrell sweet chili chips (NOT in costco) is AWESOME. All the crunch of a kettle chip with none of the oily residue.

The BBQ sauce isn't disappearing so I think you'd be safe another week.

The steel cut oats just came out and I've only seen it at Etobicoke. So I'm thinking it's either limited or just starting to be released... You definitely have time to pick it up.

You might get lucky with the sports stuff. They longed sold out at Etobicoke but I see that Mississauga had one or three in most sports items. Lots of life vest though!

                                                                                                            1. re: Nevy

                                                                                                              1. re: roostermom

                                                                                                          2. re: Nevy

Thanks Nevy .... you are awesome! I don't know how you remember everything.

I wonder if they have changed the formula for the Kale & Chia WildChips. When I bought them last year, they were very crunchy and salty ... almost too salty for me. They were a big hit at a potluck at work. I will definitely have to try the falafel chips.

BTW, does anyone know the frozen pineapple chunks has been discontinued?

                                                                                                            1. re: mrsleny

                                                                                                              1. re: mrsleny

I wonder if they did change up the chips since last year.... if they didn't, then I would say you might not like the Falafel chip. It is aggressively spiced. I did enjoy it but I do like things punchier in the flavour department.

I'll double check next time for the pineapples... I do remember seeing them but I haven't checked this week.

                                                                                                                1. re: Nevy

I'll give the falafel chips a try anyway. Always looking for a good snack chip even though I don't "need" any more! Still have half a bag of Popcorners and several bags of Cheecha puffs. I don't mind aggressively spiced ... I do have a problem with aggressively salted though.

                                                                                                                  1. re: mrsleny

                                                                                                                    1. re: chuang

The brand is Marc Nolan...mens suits and jackets by the books. Great value and looks like quality as well...

                                                                                                                    1. re: Nevy

It has a nice balance between tart and sweet. It does have a true cranberry flavour of the fruit and not of the craisins or the canned jelly stuff. The citrus flavour is quite mild. It's a nice quencher on the warmer afternoons!

                                                                                                                    2. I just wanted to let everyone know about these mangoes that Costco has been carrying for at least a month now. They're Israeli, tree-ripened mangoes, and they're like no mango I've ever tried before. They're smaller than a typical mango, with less flesh, and they taste like a cross between a mango and cantaloupe. They are unbelievably delicious! I highly recommend that you give them a try, before they stop carrying them.

These are like a cross between the Alphonso mango and cantaloupe. They are definitely worth the price and worth a try! Prior to seeing them at Costco, I had never heard of them before either.

I find the sweetness similar to Kesar but the pit is bigger (so less meat). The ones at Costco are nice quality and very fragrant. Etobicoke still had them in the fridgerated area.

                                                                                                                            1. re: Nevy

                                                                                                                              1. re: Pigurd

If they don't have the scent and yield under a gentle thumb pressure, they're not ready to be eaten.

                                                                                                                        3. Just wondering if anyone has any current sightings of "Better Than Bouillon" paste at Costco. I think I remember larger than normal jars being available but haven't seen any recently in London. If no longer available at Costco does anyone have any suggestions for low(er) price Ontario sources?

I stocked up when they went dc pricing and got the large jars for only $3 each. I've only seen them once at Loblaws where the half size jars are $6.00. I haven't seen it cheaper unfortunately. I believe Amazon.ca has it... You might get lucky if you buy it in bulk.

                                                                                                                            1. re: Nevy

I think we stocked up when we saw them long time passing but have since (finally) run out! :-( Amazon seems to have 8oz jars at $6.00, have to see if those are the "small" or "large" size jars - would be expensive for "small", not bad for "large. Walmart has $3.00 jars, not sure of size but that would require a border trip.

BTW thanks for all your Costco posts - sure helps in knowing stuff to look out for!

                                                                                                                          2. The snack aisles are mighty tempting as more school items are coming in but I'm heading out on business trip back to Asia so I really don't need 1 kg of pistachios in my carry on!

The blazing humidity made it very tempting to buy all of the d/c summer frozen treats. I'll say this... the 3 Hagen Daaz gelato for only $6.97 is AMAZING deal. I see this at Superstore for $6.77 for ONE. The salted caramel is my favourite as I love gooey caramel.

                                                                                                                            New items this week

Greek Gods Honey flavoured yogurt, 2x650g - $9.49. This might be a revival of a very old product. I've seen the brand pop in and out every few months and then get d/c pricing.

Gluten Free (yes, that's the brand name) Instant Oatmeal, x 75 g - $11.49. Similar to instant ramen... all you need to do is add water to the styrofoam cup.

Compass Sultana raisins, 2 kg - $8.99. I'm so glad to see an alternative to the yucky Sunmain raisins. I haven't tried them yet but they look plump and moist from the outside.

Compass pitted dates, 2 kg - $5.99. This is delicious. I opened a bag up on Saturday and somehow my house has devoured half already. The flavour and texture kicks the pretty but rather boring and tough medjool dates that are in the fresh fruit area. These are potently sweet, soft, not chewy (as in dried out), moist, and reminds me of some of the great dates I've had in Dubai. They're not pretty... I don't think you can set them out for guests but that means more for me! The other great thing about these... they have no pits so it's 100% date fruit for only $6 bucks.

                                                                                                                            Compass shredded coconut, 2 kg - $10.99

Krusteaz gluten free brownie mix - $8.99

Aurora Italian bread crumbs, 2.27 kg - $7.69

                                                                                                                            Detour Smart bar, 14x 38g - $15.99

                                                                                                                            Simply protein bar, 12x40g - $14.89

Tribe 'rosemary focaccia' hummus, 2x454 g - $6.69. Uh... this is total marketing 'brow raise'. I'm not sure how rosemary, salt, and olive oil makes it become 'focaccia' flavour. I just know that it makes it unpronounceable to my parents.

Nutella & go packs, 12x52g - $12.99. If would consider buying this... I'd strongly you check down the aisle for the European La Perla instead. It has a better ingredient list and has more cocoa and hazelnut compared to sugar. Plus its cheaper

Suzie's thin cakes, 4x130g - $6.99. This looks like another gluten free alternative with rice flour, quinoa, and flax.

Gurken Prinz sweet and sour gherkins, 1.5L - $5.99. Made in Austria. That was different.

                                                                                                                            Kashi quinoa bars, 40x20g - $12.49

                                                                                                                            On sale

Haagen Daz chocolate covered ice cream bars - $2.50 off

Sunrype fruit snacks - $4 off

                                                                                                                            Liberte 0% Greek yogurt - $2 off

Tropicana Orange Juice - $3 off

Black Diamond Marble Cheddar cheese strings, $4 off

Quaker Harvest Crunch Cereal, 1.8 kg - $4.89

La Perla Hazelnut Spread and Breadstick, 12x52 g - $5.99

                                                                                                                            Dad's oatmeal cookies - $2.30 off

                                                                                                                            Back on the shelves

Santa Lucia Mozzarella di Bufala - $6.99

                                                                                                                            Albert's Leap Panini Brie, 500 g - $6.99

                                                                                                                            Balderson Double Smoked Cheddar, 500 g - $9.99

Real Lemon lemon juice, 2x945 ml - $3.99

                                                                                                                            Kraft Dinner, 40 pouches - $12.99

Haagen Dazs Gelato variety pack, 3x400 ml - $6.97

                                                                                                                            Philly Swirl Fruit dips, 30x48ml - $9.97

                                                                                                                            Sunkist Fruit bars, 24x 74 ml - $4.97

Philly Swirl Coconut water and chia ice treats, 30x48 ml - $4.97

Augustin chocolate chip cookie ice cream 'bar', 12x 100g - $4.97

Mighty Leaf ice tea blends in mango, black tea, and ginger peach - $9.97. This is so tempting ... I love this brand for their teas. I would say that this would be great even for winter time for hot tea use.

                                                                                                                            Cadbury Caramilk, 48 bars - $29.97

Whooeee ... way to go Nevy. Thank you so much!

I may pick up the Compass pitted dates. Hope they are better than the last batch of pitted dates I got from Costco (Golden Boy brand). They were dried out and not very sweet. In comparison the medjools are 100x better. I still have 1/2 a package left of the Golden Boy. I'll either toss out or use to make date syrup.

Disappointed in the GH Creator organic simply salted popcorn. Not sure if it's just the batch I got but there were quite a few hard bits (very bad for dental work), unlike the Chicago Mix which has always been light and fluffy.

                                                                                                                              Have a great trip!

                                                                                                                              1. re: mrsleny

I've never been a fan of popcorn for that reason... I'm sure there are great popcorn but when it's not done well, hard semi popped kernels are awful. GH is normally good from my 2 bag experience ... Maybe it is a bad batch?

I forgot to mention that the Mississauga has a full half freezer of the frozen pineapple at regular price. Looks just restocked too!

I'm hoping my one bag wasn't a fluke. I'll probably buy another bag when I'm back on Canadian soil as I'm sure the bag will be in the recycle container soon!

I saw them on Costco.ca ! They've returned and they're looking to be 25% cheaper than regular price. They have the 12x18x1.5 board for ~$80. I see this brand sold at Williams Sonoma and it's always $125+.

If anyone has seen them there please let me know where to find them. Also, the ice cream treats were not on discount (yet) at this location.

I'll keep it in mind the next time I cave in on my San Remo apple fritter cravings and make the trek west.

But, sadly, our supply is now almost gone. I have definitely seen it at Nortown Meats in the Promenade Mall, but in a much smaller bottle for a much larger price. That's the problem with Costco -- just because you've bought something you love, it doesn't mean that you'll necessarily ever find it again.

                                                                                                                                            2. There was mention on the latest butter tart thread of Grandmothers tart. At Warden today I saw a pack of 24 asset mini tarts - plain, pecan, raspberry and lemon. I think the price was around $7.

They're sold in packages of 12, and they're actually pecan butter tarts.

UPDATE: I just went on the website, and it looks like they might be available at the Richmond Hill location as well.

I find the Grandmother's site a little difficult to get retail location info off of, but after a few different searches it seems that the 12 packs of full size tarts are available at a number of Costcos, among them Mississauga Central, Ajax and Oshawa.

I can vouch for their mini tarts at the Warden location, but as far as the other locations go I'm just going by the info on their website.

                                                                                                                                                      1. re: cheesymama

That's the only thing I can think of, but I could very well be wrong.

Did you end up buying the mini tarts? And if so, how were they?

Maybe the next time I have friends coming over or family in town visiting.

I didn't buy but they had lots. Was tempted by the butter tarts but I'd have to walk the neighbourhood giving them away so I didn't eat them all.

Or near there? I saw it on Sat and two weeks ago. Was planning to get some next time. They still had quite a bit left on Sat.

The La Marzano tomato sauce (labelled Arrabbiata, 2 glass jars, 680 ml each for $5) is being cleared and I'm stocking up for the winter. It is chunky, richly flavored, and peppery with a slightly warm aftertaste. It is a premium sauce with lots of olive oil and red peppers. It is great on crackers with a veg. or a protein, and should be fine in most pasta preparations.

                                                                                                                                                          1. I get most of the Thanksgiving and Christmas new product written up now so this monster of a post doesn't happen for a while. Enjoy the report!

I personally don't like this one as much as the Kirkland mix... tootsie roll, rockets, tootsie pop, double bubble, and pez.

Dempsters Whole Grains Coconut and Sesame bread, 2x600 g- $4.99. I'm not sure how this would taste as the only time I've ever had that combination was in a chinese 'mochi' with coconut on the outside and toasted seasame, peanut, and brown sugar in the middle. It looked like a dense squat bread from looking at it.

Sun Date Fresh Medjool dates, 907 g - $8.99. Nicely packed medjool dates are not new but this brand is. It's from Califorina and it looks less dry than the Israeli ones they previously stocked.

Enerjive Quinoa skinny crackers, 2x130 g - $8.69. I had to double check the pricing ... that is one expensive cracker. Being trendy has it's price... of course it's GMO free, gluten free, peanut free, and another symbol I don't recall.

Sinbad sweet baklava pure butter & honey, 1046 g - $13.49. Don't let the product sign fool you... read the first ingredient on it and it's gluctose fructose. Pure honey... riiight. Maybe for the 1% of it. It's made in the USA. I think this is the downgrade from the one last year where the ingredient list was much better.

Tolerant Organic Red Lentil Rotini, 750 g - $9.79. Another trendy and pricey item.

Riserva Dante Potato Gnocchi, 4x500 g - $4.99. Made in Italy.

Clif Bars Mojo Dark Chocolate Trail mix bars, 20 pieces - $19.99. Pretty pricey for a trail mix bar but it had a good ingredient list. No wacky chemicals and gluten free.

Danone Danette Yogurt Dessert, 16x100g - $9.89. It comes in chocolate and vanilla (?). It claims no artificial flavours and creamy texture.

                                                                                                                                                            Luke's Chai Seed multigrain cracker, 566 g - $8.99

                                                                                                                                                            New Books @ $18.49
                                                                                                                                                            Jamie Oliver's 15 minute meals
Jamie Oliver's Comfort food. I'm not sure how Costco got this before the release date in Canada. It's not available on amazon.ca yet.

                                                                                                                                                            On sale

                                                                                                                                                            Kingsey Light swiss slices, 500 g - $2 off

                                                                                                                                                            Kingsey Provolone slices, 500 g - $2 off

                                                                                                                                                            Kingsey Swiss slices, 500 g - $2 off

                                                                                                                                                            Babybel Light and Regular, 22x 20 g - $2.60 off

                                                                                                                                                            POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice, 1.77L - $6.99

Diva Delights Crisps - $4.89. I bought these because these are normally $8.99. After eating one of each, I was a bit disappointed with them. They're crunchy but stale crunchy... flavours were good but it's clear that they were lacking in the figs in the fig cracker. There was minimal nuts in the almond ones too. Maybe I got a bad batch but these were due late November.

Cozy Shack Tapioca Pudding, 12 - $2 off

Cozy Shack Rice Pudding, 12 - $2 off

                                                                                                                                                            G.h Cretor's Chicago Mix, 737 g - $2 off

Sealtest butter salted and unsalted - $$2.85 ... great time to stock up for upcoming Thanksgiving!

                                                                                                                                                            Back on the shelves

Denby linen dinneware (earthen not china), 16 pieces - $129.99. This is such an awesome price. I bought my 1 set of 4 pieces for $50. They are so sturdy and holds up beautifully for years. Mine are 8 years and still going wonderfully. I use them everyday and they're very sturdy.

Ontario Nectarines, 3 lb - $4.99. These are so tasty and juicy. They have a nice balance of sweet and floral flavour notes. It's not the plain sugary types you get from the monster CA peaches.

                                                                                                                                                            Patty King Jamaican Patty, 24x130 g- $14.89

                                                                                                                                                            Kirkland Organic Strawberry Spread

                                                                                                                                                            Bon Maman Strawberry Jam

Kitchenaid High gage baking sheets, 3 sheets - $19.99. I love these... for any bakers who is looking to replace or upgrade, this is a great deal. I bought a single one from the Bay on sale at $20. This pack you get 3 very well made and heavy ones. I bought this about a year ago and they're fantastic. Easy to clean and no warpage

                                                                                                                                                            Twizzler Halloween, 122 pieces - $14.99

Kirkland Pumpkin Pie, 1.9 kg - $5.99. I'm not a fan of the crust but the pie interior is maybe the best commercial one I've tasted. For $5.99, it's a steal for nearly 2 kg of pie. If you have to do a corporate potluck lunch with the team and you're on dessert duty, this would be great.

                                                                                                                                                            Kirkland Apple Pie, 2.3 kg - $9.99

                                                                                                                                                            Preventia is restocked

Fromagerie Bergeron Fresh cheese curds, 600 g - $7.99. Great tasting and they properly squeaked!

Reggiana Gourmet Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli, 2x250 g- $5.99

Bark Thins Snacking dark chocolate with pumpkin seeds, 482 g - $9.99. I find the salt content a bit disconcerting. Tasty chocolate... oversalted.

Most of the items below are part of the Christmas aisles... great prices for all of them compared to shelf prices at Walmart or Shoppers Drug mart.

                                                                                                                                                            Ferrero Rocher, 48 pieces 600 g - $13.99

Loc Maria Belgium Cookies, 499g - $9.99. I bought these last year and they were tooo good. The first one disappeared in 3 days and I had to stop buying them. I bought them a second time to a party. The box was empty within 90 minutes. It's a lovely buttery crispy 'crepe' coated in a chocolate that is closer to a milk chocolate. It's in a much nicer tin this time around and it's made in Europe

                                                                                                                                                            Tobelerone, 750 g - $11.99

Inspirations Sweet Revelation gift basket, $19.99

Lindt Luxury Advent Calendar, $19.99. I bought this last year and wow, did it ever blow away every other chocolate advent calendar I've bought in Canada previously. This is mostly an US and European product. It has MORE than double the weight of the regular Lindt ones you see at Shoppers or Loblaws. It isn't the chinsy moulded random Christmas figures or tinfoil wrapped balls... they are the deluxe mini bars in both Lindt milk chocolate, milk chocolate with milky filling (if you travel to Switzerland, you know which ones I'm referring to), and dark chocolate. They also had one each of the Lindt bear, santa, and solid 'icicle' that you see in their $8++ sets in this. Where they had the little wrapped milk chocolate balls, they had 3 balls instead of the one. They even had 3 ferroro rocher copies... I wish I had this as a child! I will be buying this again.

Christmas ceramic planter with gourmet goodies, $9.99

Christmas Tea set with loose tea, $19.99. This was very nice looking. With the amount of tea and the full tea set, I would expect it to much more.

Godiva Hot Chocolate gift, 2 of them in the set - $19.99. I bought this last year for bosses, teachers, and coaches... this was really well received.

Gallerie au Chocolat, 4x260 g - $23.99. Beautifully wrapped. This is another great item as a gift. It's made in Montreal and though the ingredient list has a few fillers, it's actually a nice tasting chocolate.

Gudrun belgium chocolate, 560 g- $16.49. Made in Europe and similar to the Gallerie au Chocolat, there are a few filler in this candy. I've tried them and I would be hard pressed to choose which one would be my favourite tasting. I'd choose the Canadian eventually but I'd be eating a few more... you know, for confirmation.

Swiss Delice Chocolate biscuits, 4 boxes 500 g total - $8.69. I had these way too many times last year and they were very good (except for the meringue based one... that one was like styrofoam but with an unusual chemical vanilla flavour). They do go on sale and often if I remember correctly. Worth every $6 I paid last year :) FYI, in the stores, the small bag is often $3.99 alone. These boxes are close to double the small bags.

My enthusiasm for finding new and interesting products has taken over my life since I no longer go out at the hottest newest restaurants. Finding others who have a love of good food is rare at work so it's always great to find others in GTA who love food as much as me!

                                                                                                                                                                1. re: Nevy

I am looking forward to trying the medjool dates. I don't mind the Israeli ones but then again they are the only ones I've ever had so it'll be interesting to compare.

The KitchenAid baking sheets are really well made. Have no idea what I'm going to do with the other 2 since the first one will probably last a lifetime.

Totally agree with kwass ... your comments/reviews are so helpful and fun to read. It must be a lot of work compiling the reviews! I still can't get over how detailed they are.

                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: Nevy

I have bought many items based on them and feel like I have a secret source of info--not really a secret but if I didn't read the reports they would be to me.

One thing I didn't like during my last visit was the new brand of Coconut oil that seems to a $5 increase over the ones I have been buying.

                                                                                                                                                                    1. re: Herne

I saw the new coconut oil as well and a bit flabbergasted at the price. Though to be honest, it is still less expensive than buying elsewhere. RH store still had the old one (Carrington Farms?) on the shelf but not sure if it will eventually disappear.

Think the new one is Nutiva?

                                                                                                                                                                      1. re: mrsleny

Maybe stocking at Mississauga or RH is needed? $5/tub is a big price increase... is the new one bigger?

Mrsleny, if you do buy the new Cali dates, let me know how they are. I'm hoping they're from the 2015 season instead of the 2014 season. I like when dried fruit still have some juicy gumminess to them. That's why I loved the ugly but great tasting pitted dates they have now.

                                                                                                                                                                        1. re: Nevy

FYI the Kirkland cashew clusters under $11.00 are amazing and a good treat.

I use it for psoriasis as it seems to be as good or, in fact, better than the cortisone preparations I get on prescription

Just a note from the hinterlands here, no curd at the Burlignton location that I could find (I looked all over) but a well stocked fancy cookie section.

                                                                                                                                                                          1. re: k8supergrover

I think maybe once I've seen it at Mississauga south. They tend to sell out fast.

Hinterland reports are welcomed! I get a kick of hearing different things. Surely you must get more unique items from Niagara region than us! I always like hearing of items from the Quebec stores... More items from Europe and alcohol!

What kinds of fancy cookies? The fresh bakery section or more the snack aisles.

                                                                                                                                                                            1. re: Nevy

                                                                                                                                                                        3. Was at the Etobicoke Costco earlier tonight. It was the least busy I could remember it being since those brutal January days of last winter. The benefit is you can casually walk the aisles without worries of bumping into people. The only drawback is you tend to spot more things to buy.

They were sampling ED Smith organic raspberry, mango and orange jam. It was very good, so I grabbed a jar but decided against it when I got to the cash register due to having an unopened jar of Bonne Maman.

They were out of pumpkin pies. I asked someone in the bakery and was told they would be restocking them tomorrow morning. Also no signs of Kirkland vanilla ice cream.

                                                                                                                                                                            2. A quiet week at Costco ... it seems we have a reprieve to actually enjoy fall without having more introductions to Christmas items. This reminds me an article where a grocery (Trader Joe's?) was testing the limits of when they can pipe Christmas songs through their stores. I don't remember the actual answer they came up with but I know September is a bit too early for me!

For all those who are trying to bulk up (no... not in prep for Thanksgiving), there are tons of protein bars on sale. I was actually quite surprised given that it isn't January. Most of the due dates are far off to 2015.

This maybe a restock in a new fancy bag but this wasn't there last week.

I bought these thinking that they are as good as the Trader Joe's Inner Peas. I was wrong... they're not quite the same. They're less greasier than Inner Peas but these ones are missing flavour. From a texture and taste perspective, it's what I would imagine lightly salted styrofoam would be like.

Moov Cauliflower florets, 1.5 kg - $5.69. This sounds like blasphemy but for all those who love creamy soups and more fat/dairy conscious, roast and then blend a whole bunch of these up and add them instead of cream. You get a tasty, thick, and creamy texture without the fat. I made a butternut squash soup this way last year and I was shocked how great it tasted. My little nephew commented that he was still at war with vegetables but the soup was ok for now.

Chudleighs Caramel Apple Blossom, 1.44 kg - $11.99. Does anyone else have childhood memories of this place. I remember sitting down at a picnic table at this orchid and mashing the plastic fork into a big blossom. The buttery crust and ooey caramel interior would mix up and I would scrape up every speck off the styrofoam plate. So that memory probably won't happen again thanks to palm oil, modified palm oil, and, caramel colour.

Mariani dried apricots, no sign since they just opened the box. These took over the Made in Organic dried apricots. Compared to the Made in Organic, the Mariani ones were more tart. They're far better than ones I had in my youth but definitely not as good as the organic ones.

Ottavio Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 1L - $6.97. I bought a bottle because I was impressed it had the harvest date, an actual serial number, DOP certification, and a best before date. I'm hoping to try it soon and I'll report back on the taste.

Wildroots Pearl Harvest Blend, 1.5 kg - $3.97. I thought this was a bit nifty as it had couscous with a bit of quinoa, baby chick peas (and I really mean baby sized!), and orzo shapes.

Sunrype Fruit Source, 30x37 g - $14.97. This seems like a great deal since the new version of it is right beside it for the same weight but different flavours AND at $30 price. I like these for trips especially for airports. They're tasty, can be mushed up (purposely or accidentally) without ruining the texture or taste, and easy to store in a backpack or purse.

                                                                                                                                                                              Cadbury Caramilk 48x52 g - $29.97

                                                                                                                                                                              1. Anyone tried the DOM Reserve Smoked Atlantic Salmon Product of Netherlands?

                                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: Dean Tudor

I'm so unhappy about this - AMEX is my primary card, I don't have or want a MC.

Although on the other hand, maybe I'll spend less there going forward as a result..

                                                                                                                                                                                    1. re: Dean Tudor

They're going with Capital One MasterCard and it is a co-branded card that is also the membership card. Great thing is that they're allowing ANY Mastercard to pay in the store. So it's not just the Capital One. To me, that's great news. I can cancel the Amex since I only used it for Costco.

                                                                                                                                                                                      1. re: Nevy

Capital One has been junk mailing me for years. Hardly a class act. I'll be looking over all the card rewards before I transfer to them.

                                                                                                                                                                                        1. re: jayt90

                                                                                                                                                                                    2. Has anyone seen Filotei Salsa al tartufo speciale lately? I almost finished the one I bought in Jan. It is not available at both Newmarket and Richmond Hill locations. Thanks.
