Where to find yellow watermelon?

My husband wants yellow watermelon for his birthday gift this year. Anyone know where I can find it in LA?

  1. I bought one a few years ago from Ralphs. Had no idea yellow watermelon existed. I cut it open and freaked out.

      1. Santa Monica or Hollywood farmers markets…and they don't taste very different.

          That was one thing I was very disappointed in. I remember having yellow watermelon in Taiwan as a wee lad and it tasted very different than red watermelon. As an adult, I tried some yellow watermelon from here and it wasn't that different. I don't think my taste buds have changed that much, maybe the variety isn't the same here as in Taiwan, or maybe they've been cultivated to the point where they taste similar to red. If so; dear lord why?!

                      How funny you should mention those (the first 3). I'm not normally a fan of Taiwanese food, but those are some of my fav breakfast items (well, fan tuan more than yeoteow by itself).

                        Not to speak for J.L., but I think he meant to have those 3 items together. The crullers as filling for the sao bing, and the dou jiang to wash it all down with.

                        At least that's what I would do.

                        As soon as I finish my bag of betel nuts. And the girls.

                          I needs to start a Taipei Food Truck.

                        Cold sesame chicken noodle sold in plastic bags next to dou hua 攤 on Sunday morning open market (the original savory-sweet bang-bang); pork blood rice cart -- extra hot sauce, cilantro, peanut powder, easy soy paste; tandoor roasted street yams; loading metal bendung by the dozens into the industrial steamer for lunch; sitting at counter of (then putrid) Shilin on Friday night (no school bitches) downing bowls of 甜不辣, doursed in spicy ketchup (then naively wondering WTF is this worthless Imperial Japanese tempura shit being served in Torrance.)

                        And, walking by the YKK factory to watch domestic flights land at 中山 airport.

                        Try a lil, peoples. Any 2-bit chump can google Taiwanese NRM.

                          Boiled in-shell peanuts sold by ride-by street vendors.

                          I remember those metal lunch boxes and steamers in my classroom in first grade. Also the hot food on the train between Taipei and Tainan.

                            Eating said reheated biendang at your desk in the classroom when some obasan bursts in with fresh hot lunch for the one Taiwanese kid (who already has a lunchbox, mind you) - And the class watches in salivary envy as a four-course tableside hot lunch service is prepared for that one kid, complete with cut fresh fruit at the end.

                            I also think Taiwanese white rabbit candy is different than US ones.

                            They're better. Obviously.

                    2. Agree with others that taste is pretty much the same. However, when combined with heirloom tomatoes, fresh mint and some crumbled good feta, you will have one colorful, delicious salad. Works as well with red watermelon. Such a good combination of summer flavors.

My first and only experience of yellow watermelon was probably a experience which is a unfair comparison, I shared some that was brought specially from a farmer's personal batch to his friend who was my friend at a farmer's market. It's been awhile(4 years or so)so I don't remember the flavor's exactly but I remember it being quite different than regular watermelon in the sense that it had the flavor of watermelon but had the sweetness of honeydew.
