Good places to eat in downtown Chicago?

  • 3

We are staying in the Gold Coast area near Gaudy Square Park. Can you please provide me with the names of a few places to eat (breakfast - small bakery, lunch and dinner) in that area, the near north side and in downtown. Curb appeal doesn't matter, good food does. We actually prefer smaller restaurants. In the past we have eaten on several occasions in Greektown and loved it, but we will not have a car. Any ethnic or Kosher restaurants would be fine, Thanks.

  1. Breakfast:
The Original Pancake House on East Bellevue - www.originalpancakehouse.com

    Small bakery:
Delightful Pastries on North Wells Street - www.delightfulpastries.com
La Fournette on North Wells Street - www.lafournette.com
Hendrickx Belgian Bread Crafter on East Walton Street - www.hendrickxbakery.com

    Brunch/lunch/dinner:
Salpicon for contemporary Mexican - www.salpicon.com
Perennial Virant for small plates - www.perennialchicago.com
Lou Malnati's at State and Rush for deep-dish - www.loumalnatis.com
Café Spiaggia for Italian - www.cafespiaggia.com
Café des Architectes for contemporary French/American - www.cafedesarchitectes.com
    Hugo's for seafood - www.hugosfrogbar.com
    Gibson's for steaks - www.gibsonssteakhouse.com
    Kiki's for French bistro fare - www.kikisbistro.com
MK for contemporary American - www.mkchicago.com

All of these are very good and are in, or relatively close to, the Gold Coast. (Of course, there many, many more restaurants in the neighborhoods comprising downtown Chicago!)

    1. Kosher in downtown Chicago is pretty much non-existent. There's a small stall in our French Market with prepackaged items. There's a lunch-only spot that's West of the Loop that's open Mon-Thurs.

The closest full service kosher restaurant is in Lakeview about 3 miles away - Milt's BBQ for the Perplexed - http://www.miltsbbq.com/ about 10 minutes by cab or is easily reached by the CTA;s red line -

It is excellent - great barbecue and had one of the best hamburgers - the Milt Burger -
