Frankin's Chavela's, after beer becomes a door to Panama

  • 0

I went to Chevela's, located on Franklin. It is just blocks north of Eastern Parkway.

The ambiance is nice, and my conclusion is it is a good place for drinks and socializing.

I had the Tlacoyo con Nopales. For a Mexican restaurant, I did not see any Mexicans eating there, but saw many others who may or may not be capable of temporary or periodic assimilation to TRUE MEXICAN FOOD.

There was no beef tongue on the menu, nor beer stomach. A grave disappointment that went to the depths of my soul, though was soothed with a bottle of Bohemia beer, and quickly gained composure.

The main point here, is what happened after beers and the Tlacoyo con Nopales.

Upon exiting, we headed north on Franklin, and I took leave of my party, to investigate what interested my curiosity, which seemed 'right on' for finding the flavor of this neighborhood (as opposed to cookie cutter Park Slope slop-age...).

A dive bar I ducked into was all Panamanian people, friendly place providing the near local for the Panamanian inhabitants, Red Strip.

On investigating more Panamanian night spots, I passed by several 'then late so closed' Panama restaurants, which cater obviously to the sector of the neighborhood, or transported visitors from other neighborhoods, sharing the same patois, who filled the bars I visited that night, Panama people.

According to a rating found on the web, Chavela's is listed as top Mexican restaurant with a ("Chavela's") 92%.

I dare say for authentic cuisine on this stretch of Franklin, allow yourself to indulge your ears to a bit of pidgin, patois and creole, and check out many of the Panama restaurants, and bars.

Though a nice ambiance, and a great place for drinks with friends, for authentic comida Mexicana, stay clear of Chavela's.

My next trip this stretch of Franklin will be to fill my belly with some authentic Panamanian food, and imbibe to the sounds of Panamanian soca.
