MasterChef US June 30 chatter

Since it was (wisely) suggested (IMHO) to have a new thread for this.

Good Lord but Courtney just annoys me more and more every week, even as I know I'm being manipulated to hate her. I just. The heels we had to keep seeing closeups on...I DO NOT CARE. I want to see the food, not the chefs' feet.

Yay Luca. Please just give Luca his own cooking show, I adore him. (I'm now about a dozen recipes deep into his cookbook and it is great. We had his Parsley-Garlic Pesto Vegetables tonight as a side dish for dinner and my sweetie was swooning.)

The whole thing with Tyler and the Panna Cotta just seemed...strange. I don't know how I feel about any of that yet, except that if it were a chef they wanted to keep around I am betting they would have decided to simply taste his panna cotta and judge on that, despite the plating error. And how odd that Jaimee's two panna cottas that she tried to plate were so bad, but the one that Tyler "took" looked good? I don't even at this point. It's hard to take any of it at all at anything resembling face value.

  1. I admire Tyler for not crying or complaining or blaming, he even apologized to Jaimee

You don't see dignity often but it's nice when you do

What happened to Jaimee's panna cotta? I had trouble understanding her mumbling. I just can't imagine her awkwardness being faked. In any event, it's painful to watch her.

It's also painful to watch the pole dancer and the girl with black roots. Can't wait for those two to scratch each other's eyes out. I'd even supply the BB guns.

    2. The one Tyler 'took' also looked collapsed to me. After reading Ben Starr's blog I no longer believe anything is 'real' about this show.

Gordy was quite crude in this episode when he talked to an 18 year old girl about her 'balls'.

I took a look at Ben Starr's bog...wow, if that is true, then shame on MasterChef! I figured that a lot of it is staged, but had no idea of what is really going on...
But, I will still continue to watch...sad as that may be.

        1. re: SusieQQ

I know this is pretty repetitive chatter about how Masterchef Australia is different - but it is very sad how Masterchef US has stayed so close to the notion of "villains". The Australian version has done a very good job of making for compelling tv without ever having to bother with contestants who hate one another.

However, it's been a clear feature of the competition productions that Gordon Ramsey's been involved with and it's unfortunate.

        2. re: John E.

I started to read that blog, got the general gist and quit. There are two sides to every story. I have a hard time believing all the villainy is manufactured, and I don't feel any sympathy for people who want to appear on these shows.

          1. re: Worldwide Diner

I was going to recommend your reply until the last line :( I'm one of those people who want to appear on the show, just for the experience. Having gone to two casting calls and talking to a lot of people there, there are plenty of genuine actually interesting home cooks who try out.

It's just those are rarely if ever the people who end up getting cast...

            1. re: sockii

You can go on the show and keep it nice. I've got nothing against Ricky Gervais or Big Willie. Unfortunately if you're not a douche, you don't get as much air time. So those who are interested in becoming D list celebrities have to act like douches. In the former instances, you don't need by sympathy. In the latter instances, I ain't got no sympathy. In any case, what I think should not deter you from doing whatever you want to do in life.

              1. re: Worldwide Diner

I could be wrong, but I don't recall Luca ever being hateful or snotty to his co-contestants, even when seemingly goaded to do so. Producers can manipulate a lot of things, they can take things out of context but they can't put words in your mouth that aren't there. (well I suppose with the magic of CGI they Can.... but highly unlikely.)

                1. re: Firegoat

From a totally different reality show, there was a contestant who commented that one snotty comment attributed to her in its entirety was "I can understand how some people dislike X, but I don't because of ABC" - and the only phrase used was "I can understand how some people dislike X". So while they can't make you say "Y is the worst person in the world" - there's quite a wide range of "out of context" stuff that can dramatically alter how someone's perceived.

While I agree that at this point it is beyond naïve to not know that going in and not know that it might happen - I do think that it's very fair to be naïve about how you'd be impacted by the kind of negative impact that can come from the public. And this is where I think that Ben's point of calling attention to what Masterchef in particular is doing as negative is fair.

                  1. re: cresyd

Oh I agree with you. There is definitely manipulation going on. Often times I'll watch and the voice over of the contestant doesn't go with the video clip of the contestant. So you know things are being manipulated. I personally know my temper, and if I'm getting no sleep, being jerked around from hotel to hotel, and putting up with a bunch of strangers also whacked out on no sleep, I'm sure sooner or later I'd say something I'd regret. I think that's why I admired Luca in his season because they just couldn't trip him up it seemed. He would clap for people who seemed to hate him, and praise his opponent's food.
After a week or too I'd probably come across like Krissi :D

                    1. re: cresyd

On any reality tv show, if they don't say the whole sentence on camera, I assume they didn't say that sentence.

                      1. re: cresyd

Also keep an eye on the wardrobe. Often in sequential shots, they'll be wearing something totally different, indicating that they were shot hours or days apart, and are being cobbled together just for dramatic effect to tell a story of the producers' choosing. Not just the confessional stuff, which is obviously shot afterwards.

                        1. re: cresyd

even in my Skype interview for Rachel vs Guy they asked me " what is your mom like?" I said she is Awesome she is everyones mom lilke mome to the world even when Her Momma Bear come bear comes out she is there for all kids"
Then They said... Can you repeat that last part we didnt get it... Say "When her momma bear comes out watch out" so I said the whole sentence again.... and they didnt seem happy..

                        2. re: Firegoat

That's partly why Luca is my favorite winner to date. He came across very genuine last season and never seemed to give in to drama. He's very Italian :) I even liked how he dealt with the judges trying to bait him last night to say something negative about how Willie was screwing up his dish..."maybe he is inventing something new" (or something to that effect.)

(Also, his cookbook is shockingly good.)

                          1. re: sockii

                            He's a mensch, love him!

he should have his own show

                2. Every episode they show someone where I think to myself, "Who the hell is that?" This week it's a slightly older (but still Desperate Housewife-y blond lady) who seemed nice. I barely get to see Dan at all. The panna cotta thing - ugh. So phoney. But I don't understand why, if Tyler made four (there were four on his tray) he would just run into the fridge and grab one. Wasn't the point of making four to choose the best looking one? Jaimee makes me uncomfortable. My husband, previously uninterested in the show other than politely for my sake, now gets the giggles when Big Willie speaks, because he says he sounds just like Chef from South Park. Everytime he's on screen, he says "Hello, children." Drew Barrymore - again with the faces.

The panna cotta thing is big!!! FIRST TIME EVER THAT A CONTESTANT PRESENTED SOMETHING HE DIDN'T COOK! As it turns out, it was just a mistake, but one that affected not only Tyler, but also Jaimee. I'm still scratching my head as to what happened to Jaimee's other panna cotta. Someone turned off the blast chiller or what?

                    1. re: Worldwide Diner

"FIRST TIME EVER THAT A CONTESTANT PRESENTED SOMETHING HE DIDN'T COOK"

except for almost every episode of Master Chef Jr, ooops did I say that????

"This week it's a slightly older (but still Desperate Housewife-y blond lady) who seemed nice."

That would be Christine who yeah, has totally been under the radar from the start. Looks like we'll finally see some more of Dan next week in a pairs challenge which I suspect will not be pretty to watch, based on the preview.

                      1. re: sockii

My theory is that the ones who DO NOT get tv time will necessarily be on the next show, if not also the next 3 or 4 episodes.

                        1. re: Kris in Beijing

Yes looks like they will make up for the lack of no Leslie (Malibu Ken, sorry) by shoving a bunch of Leslie at us next week.

                    3. It seemed strange that they only had six people make Luca's dish, Saving money on ingredients?

Definitely agree about no more shoe close ups. Why? What was the point?

Didn't hear a peep out of Leslie. Wish they would have shown us more final dishes instead of doing the Jamiee tyler drama. Felt bad for Tyler. His dessert was probably better than Jaimee's collapsed crap.

Also, about to start putting on the mute everytime Courtney or Jaimee talks

Since they haven't done it in other episodes (as far as I can remember) I'm going to assume it was because Gordon called Courtney something like "Twinkletoes" in reference to her shoes. So they had to get that into the story line.

The same as how, after Jaimee presented and mumbled "I wish I had three" there was a cut to Ramsey reacting as if he heard the comment and KNEW IMMEDIATELY EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED WITH THE RAMEKINS so that when Tyler came up he could get right to it.

                        1. re: ennuisans

What I'd like to know is, what happened to the pea purée? ; )

                        2. Thought whole panna cotta thing was gonna end up differently. And jaimee's physical movements and voice are a bit strange for me??

Don't know names, but there are at least 3 girls on show who think their S doesn't stink... FM heels, teenager, and another I can't put a name/description to.

I can't see her and not think Drew Barrymore thanks to these threads. It helps with all her over the top facial reactions tho....

I hate her because if she had not cast I would have got cast in Junior...or wait do I love her because of that?

They said I was too much like a "minature" of one of the adults they had cast....Elizabeth.. that is how I know she sticks around for awhile.

Nawww we are now rooting her...thanking her for saving me from reality TV instead of real TV

I am actually a lot nicer than her... but we look an awful lot alike.. and have the same mannerisms..what is weird is I have had people compare me to to Drew Barrymore too

                          2. This was my first viewing of this cycle. I expected a "run off" between Tyler and Jaimee. Does she have a condition/ disorder? Turettes? (I know I should go google).
I'd forgotten how overproduced MC is; this episode didn't allow me to connect with anyone I'd like to see win.

That has been my problem from the start of this season.

Too many people to start out with, and hardly any of them likeable or uniquely engaging. I don't see any of this group as having actual cookbook potential.

                              1. re: sockii

I find this season such a contrast to last season's New Zealand masterchef where after the first couple episodes I really did not want to see ANYONE leave. I felt like you really got to know them, and get their perspective and their food.
Last season on the U.S. I did like Luca. The season before that I liked Josh. This season???? Nope. No one. Dan maybe because of what someone has posted on here how he's done fundraising for an injured chef, possibly Cutter, just seems kind of interesting. Other than that, cut some more people. Don't care.

I think Leslie can cook but enjoys being the story of the day too much

                                    >>>Does she have a condition/ disorder? <<<

I'm wondering the same thing. At first I thought the mumbly quivery cutesy little girl vocal thing was just an annoying acting affectation, but now I'm wondering if it's some kind of palsy or something. I couldn't find anything on the web about it, though, and I don't care enough about her to spend a whole day searching...

                                    1. re: acgold7

As much as they exploited the somewhat blind girl at every chance they had every episode, I'm guessing if someone had a disability we'd have already heard about it.

                                      1. re: Firegoat

Yeah, good point. But perhaps a vocal quaver is too minor even for them.

It's not really a disabilty. But I guess it would be less annoying if we knew there was a real reason for it.

OK, that makes sense as to her voice quavering.

It wasn't just the quavering voice, it was her eyes, facial expression, posture, etc.

I don't recall her boing anything like that on the beginning episodes where she was featured a bit.

                                            1. re: C. Hamster

I don't remember that in earlier episodes either, but perhaps the stress of the competition caused it to be more prevalent.

                                    2. I just watched Monday's episode, and haven't read any posts except sockii's initial post.

First - I'm sick and tired of Courtney and her (fake?) bedazzled Christian Louboutins. Her comment about Big Willie just seemed SO insincere. She just needs to go. Hopefully next week.

As for Tyler's panna cotta - I disagree that his dish looked any better than Jaimee's - it was a flop as well, and didn't set up properly. I think the judges did exactly as they should have - he took the wrong panna cotta. But the bigger question is WHY would he have chosen just one from the fridge instead of his whole tray? Oh that's right - it was his turn to go, so the producers told him what he had to do. This created MORE DRAMA.

Disappointed that we couldn't see more of the savory dishes to see how they fared. Leslie had no camera time, Dan was on camera for just a bit. This episode seemed to focus on 4 people - Courtney, Tyler, Jaimee, and Big Willie.

BTW, did anyone notice an oddness to Jaimee's voice, like she was having a lot of difficulty getting her words out?

On most of these reality cooking shows, the contestants usually have to prepare one plate for presentation/photos and one for the judges. I don't know if that is true for this show. But if it is, then it would make even less sense to take one ramekin.

Why wouldn't you take your whole tray when you went to the fridge? Especially since you would most likely wait until the last moment to take it from the fridge. There wouldn't be any time to go back for another one.

I think Linda was correct in that the Tyler taking the wrong ramekin was because it was part of the script. I wonder what they gave him to participate in this ruse? For that matter, I wonder what "illness" Gordon had that made him leave the production?

no... I Think CL shoes are known by their red soles. I wasn't paying close enough attention to see that. I thought the shoes were kind of trashy looking, but I'm a birkenstock kind of girl anyway.

                                                    2. Apropos of nothing, I've been watching season 6 of Masterchef AU online. It is so, so much better than the American version. Not least of which due to the fact that all of the contestants really care about each other and try to help each other. No backbiting, just decent, self-effacing people trying to do their best. It puts the US version to shame.

The channel has only loaded episodes 1- 40 at this point; episode 43 just aired today, where we are down to the top 9 out of the original 24.

The first difference you will note vs. the U.S. version is that contestants are not allowed to wear high heels while cooking in the kitchen.

                                                        2. MK and Ah-Ran kissed and made up, but I don't get their dish - fried rice on fried tortilla....didn't the judges poo poo fried on fried? I can't imagine that and pico de gallo tasted good.

Vietnamese do not actually call any of their rolls "Spring roll" to my knowledge - they just call that here in the U.S. So some Vietnamese will call the fried rolls Spring rolls and the non-fried Summer rolls. It's whatever name they want to give - I think that's the reason for the confusion.

                                                                              1. re: Worldwide Diner

It’s gỏi cuốn in Vietnamese. The literally translation is salad (gỏi) roll (cuốn). Whatever you call them, they are light, refreshing and delicious. You can also do a variation with any salad ingredients. Most restaurants serve rolls with nước chấm, a fish sauce based dipping sauce (my favourite) but it’s pretty common in Vietnam to have it with a spicy peanut Hoisin sauce."
