July 2014 Openings and Closings

Red Bird in Waltham, the New American place with a former Franklin Cafe chef as its chef/owner, is aiming to open in the old Tuscan Grill spot sometime in July.

Per Eater Boston's most recent update, Fuji and Legal on the Mystic are both set to open in Assembly Row.

Mother Juice is set to open late in the month in Kendall Square.

I'm guessing Fort Point's Bastille Kitchen opening will slide into July.

Zoe's Gourmet Chinese is hoping to open in July after recovering from a building collapse.

  1. Fingers crossed that the new location of Common Ground in Arlington opens in July.

    1. Just talked to someone manning the Violette Bakery farmers' market stand in Watertown today. Violette will be looking for a new location because of a rent hike.

Wasn't their location on Mass. Ave empty for several years before they moved in there and had rapid turnover before that? Must be some landlord.

      2. According to FB Page:

Munch Mobile Kitchen, new food truck:

"Hey!! Don't go away this weekend and come kick it with us for our SOFT OPENING at Night Shift Brewing this Saturday July 5th from 12noon to 8pm! Tell us what you think and enjoy the best local beer around! See you there for ‪#‎Poutine‬"

Has anyone had a chance to try this truck? Curious any reviews

        2. According to Waltham Patch, Watch City Brewing Company has a sign on the door with the dreaded "Closed for Repairs", and rumors are that it has closed permanently.

According to Wickedlocal Waltham, Watch City owes a great deal in back taxes and is for sale.

            1. re: bear

Oh thank god! Their "craft beer" was so bad it was a complete disservice to the industry.

                1. re: Unfoodie

Local brewing talent Portico brews out of their space as contract/gypsy brewers though.

Looks like the Watch City equipment is up for auction on July 30, according to the Brand New Watch twitter feed.

Yup, and Kung Fu is also looking to open in Davis Square in Somerville.

                2. Drove by Zoe's this morning, just to see if they looked any closer to opening. Nope. The windows are still covered. The latin fusion restaurant next door has "We are hiring" signs in their window.

                  1. re: smtucker

I've been doing the same thing. The facade seems to be fine now, and since I thought that was what had collapsed, I've been wondering what's taking so long. It looks like they are doing a lot inside, so may be taking this opportunity to remodel? I do hope they reopen soon!

                    1. re: Stride

Last time there was no paper on the windows, it appeared that much of the interior had been demolished. There were stacks and stacks of insulation. Tables and chairs were pushed up against the exterior wall two high.

                      1. re: smtucker

Yes. It also looked like they waited a long time before getting going on the interior work. Maybe waiting for base building (landlord) work to be done.

Mixtura next door looked great when a caught a glimpse inside, still very much in progress, but they have stepped up the decor.

                    2. re: smtucker

I walked by on Sunday and there was active work going on inside. So good news: active work, bad news: active work

By active I mean people actually doing trades-kinda stuff.

                      1. re: jgg13

Well that's encouraging at least. Last week when I drove by the door was open and it looked like there was work going on, so maybe there's hope for a July re-opening, even if end of July.

                      2. re: smtucker

still closed as of a week ago, but looked a little closer to opening...

                        1. re: LauraBear

Mixtura, the Latin fusion restaurant that shares a building with Zoe's, was open (or appeared to be open) when I drove by this evening. Zoe's was not, and appears still to be a work in progress—but at least there's visible progress on the interior, while the exterior appears to be completed.

                          1. re: owades

Yes, I went to Mixtura yesterday. Food seemed the same, though the configuration of my dish had changed a little - huevos rancheros came with potatoes instead of tortillas. Next time I'll be more specific when ordering. I'm very glad to have them back. And the place looks great.

                          2. re: LauraBear

When I drove by Zoe's yesterday, it looked like they had put a sign on the door saying "Coming soon" or something with "soon" in it. Fingers crossed!

                        2. Alfredo's which is replacing the Snack Bar in East Cambridge seems to be ready to open any day now.

It actually had an open sign yesterday, which surprised me because it didn't look completely ready yet.

FWIW, I don't see any mention of it on their website yet (http://www.alfredositaliankitchen.com). Is their pasta supposed to be any good?

                              1. re: umeditor

If it's like the one in somerville we find the meatballs to be a cut above standard sub/pizza shop meatballs but the pasta/sauce to be exactly the same sort of crud you'd normally get at such a place.

                                1. re: jgg13

                                  +1.

I also like their pizza, calzones and subs as well. Even though if I want a sub I'd still walk a few feet down Broadway and grab one from Leone's,

                                  1. re: Matt H

They've become my #2 spot for when we do takeout/delivery from pizza/sub shops near us. The #1 is City Slicker, which I both prefer in general and it's across the street. They're not going to compete with something like A4, but for delivery pizza and such it's pretty decent.

                                    1. re: jgg13

I called the Somerville location to check if the East Cambridge one was open, and they told me that they are unrelated to the one in East Cambridge and in fact it's a former employee and the use of the name is going to be a problem. The Somerville location also told me that they deliver to all of Cambridge, which I didn't realize.

Very interesting. I always assumed it was another branch in the mini chain

                                      2. re: jgg13

Good to know. I've drove past city slicker a thousand times and have never tried them out for some reason.

                                        1. re: Matt H

Not everyone cares for them, I've seen their pizzas (I'd call them much better than average Greek style) labeled as salty and greasy. I don't find that to be true but I like salt and grease.

Their sandwiches and such seem much less out of a bag than other joints.

Wouldn't go out of my way but delivery or on the way takeout you could do much worse IMO

                                          1. re: jgg13

I tried the pizza yesterday. Thin crust, which I prefer over your standard Greek pan pizza around here. Would have liked more sauce on the cheese slice. Pepperoni was better, although I'm not a big pepperoni pizza fan. It was pretty greasy and salty, so perhaps they've done a good job of emulation. I agree with the other assessments; not bad for quick takeout/delivery and better than some competing options in their bracket.

                              2. In more Waltham news, Wickedlocal Waltham is reporting that the Skellig will soon become Garcia Brogan's, a second location of a Mexican/Irish place in Lowell.

The Skellig and Watch City Brewery closing in the same week? That's kind of crazy, considering those were two major Waltham mainstays for the local student crowd.

                                  1. re: bear

haven't been to the skellig, but the food at brogan's is some of the worst bar food i have ever had.

decent tap beer selection and they do fry their chips in-house, but otherwise, ick.

Surprisingly, it is probably better than the Skellig's. The food at the Skellig was barely edible.

                                    2. Junipers in Wellesley is opening late next week.

                                      1. Slum Brew is opening a beer garden at Assembly Row. Slated for July 30th.

                                        http://www.bostonmagazine.com/restaur...

Not a big fan of their beer, the name Slum Brew or Caitlin's idea that beer bloggers and reviewers should give Slum Brew beers better reviews/more stars ...just because (she penned an open letter saying such things when the beer bloggers convention was in town) BUT we need more (a?) beer garden around these parts.

What is a "very Somerville" concept anyways?

Yes, they do need to be more friendly to the public. Everything from getting very aggressive towards me at a tasting when I asked if I could tour their brewery (this was somewhat after their brand launch) to yelling at one of the bartenders at a local bar for serving their beer at the wrong temperature (it was on cask, put into a cask by the people who brew their beer for them, and served at proper cask temperature).

I was always under the impression they gypsy brew out of Mercury and not straight up contract.

Love the idea of even more options for restaurants on Cambridge Street. There's another huge empty space two doors down from New Deal. (Where the bed store used to be.) My last inquiry about that space was that it may end up being....a liquor store.

Not positive it's a restaurant. Educated guess based on googling the name. With Lone Star replacing Lizzy's, that could become an interesting few blocks.

I am sorry about Lizzy's but have been very excited about Lone Star. The whole street is really filled with so many diverse places.

We stopped in and asked Albert if he knew anything. (Had to pick up some cold beer for tonight anyway.) He said he has heard that a Chinese restaurant may go in there, but they are concerned about parking. Albert was in a chatty mood and told us what the rent on the place is. Crazy. He was gloomy about their odds of making it based on the rent.

Mast' is allegedly derived from "o'mast", Neapolitan for "master craftsman". I see why they dropped the "O'": that just would be too easily mistaken for "Terry O'Mast's: an Irish drinkery", but I'm less sure why the apostrophe got moved to the end. It does represent a brand-new form of apostrophe abuse in restaurant names.

It looks like Einstein has a college cafe side business that might differ from their regular shops though I've never been in any of their shops so I really don't know. From what you are saying, it sounds like it isn't going to be much of an addition to the neighborhood though.

I say this as a general fan of convenience store deli food: they were absolutely disgusting. I'm sure the fact that they were completely dried out and solid had something to do with that.

Why don't you go check it out, too? After visiting and seeing the home-made signage, something tells me they may not yet have a web site or Facebook. The owner said he has been open since March! I never noticed them but perhaps the new giant FRENCH BAKERY sign in the window helped me to notice it. They're revamping the kitchen and moving the bar to the other side of the room.

BOOOOORING. Seriously I love gnocchi (and prefer them to the previously ubiquitous fettuccine alfredo) but I am so, so tired of them being THE veg entree. And if I want to order a grilled cheese I might as well spend half the price across the street at Paul Revere.

I don't expect a huge variety from a place specializing in burgers, but I do expect a few options in anywhere intending to be a "neighborhood haunt" type place in Greater Boston.

I can come up with several ideas just from ingredients already in other items -- grilled flatbread with brie, arugula, apple butter and caramelized fennel? Etc.

And I doubt Paul Revere uses brie and marinated tomato in their grilled cheese. And how do you know Paul Revere's grilled cheese will be half the price? Snappy Patty hasn't posted prices yet. They do list stuffed flatbreads, but don't say with what, so maybe you can get them stuffed with the items you mentioned. Gee, give the guy a chance instead of bashing a place before it's even opened.

Like most places that go on those shows they revert back to their old ways a few months after. I frequented the place when they first opened and it was great for fried wings, fries and cold beer. A few years in it went from a partnership to a single owner and that guy wasn't the most cordial to his staff and clientele.
That being said I 100% attribute their demise to downtown Framingham becoming more of a shithole (if you can believe it) then it was when they opened some 15+yrs ago. Lots of the blue collar jobs in the area are gone and the residents just don't have the disposable income they once did. When a restaurant starts tightening its belt it is bound to turn out a lesser product. The only good things about the area are the tasting room at Jack's Abbey, the sandwiches at Waverly Market and the inexpensive Italo-American atLa Cantina (and their house dressing "Fanny's" cause it's like putting crack on a salad).

Call me "boss" and basically I'm gonna fire you. It's too bad, I did like their wings.
