Lawrence, KS to Chicago, IL - good eats in eastern IA?

  • 6

I'm making a road trip from Lawrence to Chicago next week. We are planning on splitting the drive there into two days and staying somewhere in eastern Iowa overnight - possibly Iowa City or the Quad Cities. I'm looking for suggestions for good eats in that part of the world, especially barbecue or fried chicken joints. Thanks!

  1. One of the specialties of the area is pork tenderloins. The best I know of is Augusta Restaurant in Oxford, Iowa outside of Iowa City. The chef is from New Orleans so they also have Louisiana cuisine. They do have fried chicken. Not sure about bbq. It might be hard to beat what you find in KC.

    1. How about the Amana Colonies? I don't know if traditional American fits your idea of good eats. The Ox Yoke Inn in Amana has been serving food since 1940. It's not far off I-80 just a little west of Iowa City.

      1. In my experience you will find better food in Iowa City than in the Quad Cities.

I was thinking that too. There was a long thread about Iowa City. We have detoured to Oxford the last several times we have been in the area though.

Thanks everyone. We did go to Augusta Restaurant in Oxford and enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately the gumbo didn't do it for me but the pork tenderloin sandwich was excellent (and enormous!) as was the fried chicken.

        2. Crap, I'm late to the thread.

I will say that a very good BBQ place in Iowa City is Wildwood, which is also a honkey-tonk. I tend to go in spite of the ambiance. :)

Augusta is great, though I have to agree with the OP that the gumbo hasn't grabbed me when I went.
