Home Cooking Dish of the Month (July 2014) Nominations

Believe it or not, it's time to nominate for July's Dish of the Month.

People are pickling up a storm here on June's Dish of the Month thread:

You are welcome to contribute to these earlier threads at any time.

Now please turn your food thoughts to July… what shall we all put on the table for this summery month? Remember that a dish is loosely defined as an ingredient and a method of preparation.

Nominations will be open until June 26th at 10pm Pacific time (1 am on June 27th Eastern time, and 5 am June 27 GMT). Please nominate your dish using ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. (If you discuss the dish elsewhere in the thread, please type it in lower case. This makes it easier to count the dishes in caps, without counting extra nominations for one person.)

You may nominate more than one dish. And if someone else nominates a dish that you wish to support, just reply to that post, and type the name of the dish in all caps. The dishes with the most nominations will move on to the voting round, where each person only gets one vote. If you haven't joined us before, feel free to jump in!

                    Cool. My concern with smoking was whether one needed a smoker, and how many people had them. So I'm in on:
                    SMOKED MEATS/FISH.

                        I'm in the mood for salads as it is getting into the summer more! I'd go for fruit salad, but I'm not sure it fits the guidelines!

                              I can't really be the one to clarify, as I don't know what was intended by the those who posted summer bean dish. But to fit into Dish of the Month, it has to be a little more specific. Beans are an ingredient, so a prep method or type of dish has to be included. The dried bean/fresh salad entries are just fine, but I don't know if that is what the posters who wrote "summer bean" had in mind.

                                That was me, and I included the disclaimer that it didn't quite fit; just threw it out there. I was thinking of cooked dried bean (side) dishes, lighter and more appropriate for summer meals, something that you might serve at July cookouts. Lighter sauces and more herbs/veggies in the dish.

                                Won't bother me to throw the idea away; not sure I can find a way to fit it. I think some other folks are finding more refined concepts of it anyway. :)

                                          I love this for summertime, as fresh veggies pair well with beans in a cold prep dish. (think beans in place of pasta in your favorite pasta salad recipe)

                                          1. After talking to Steve h. I'll give this a shot! GRILLED HAMBURGERS. There are so many variations that a person could do and I'd love to try some new things.

                                                  Seriously, tho -- how many variations really are there of grilled hamburgers? Different meats & seasonings?

                                                    Per steve h. it's totally an art! (Where are you steve?) With cheese, and what kind? What's your "burger" made of? Do you grind your own? 80/20? Something else? What kind of toppings? What's in your burger mix (i.e. spices, onions, etc.)? Do you use bison/pork/ground chicken/other meat? What kind of bun? Is yours a slider or a regular? Oh, the questions!!!!! And millions of potential answers.

                                                        I'll participate, but I really think of salad dressing as a condiment, not a "dish". But then that's just my 2 cents. A dish is something you consume like "fried chicken" or "steak". But I would not sit and consume a "dish" of salad dressing :) I know I voted for it originally but the more I thought about it, the more I changed my mind (I am a woman, after all).

                                                          I actually agree, but enough people were enthusiastic about it, so it won.
                                                          On the other hand, pickles are a sort of condiment, and may not be something you'd sit down and consume, but it's been a very fun thread.
