The twixt lunch and dinner “twilight zone”:

I had checked out of my hotel and had a stretch of time to kill before going to the airport. I was hankering for some really good food but it was that “twilight zone” when almost all the good French restaurants had stopped serving lunch and wouldn’t open for dinner for quite a while. Then I remember Le Caveau was open all day on weekdays. It is a c1900 three-story Victorian house on the corner of rues Victoria and President-Kennedy downtown. When I got there at 3 pm the cozy basement dinning room was open. I opted for a table d’hotel menu. The salad was completely ordinary, but the main course was a generous, succulent and tasty pork loin in apricot sauce washed down with a nice glass of Macon-villages blanc. The include crème brulée was equal to the best I have ever had. I wanted to leave Montreal with a good taste in my mouth so I finished off with a glass of 20 year old tawny Porto from their inviting Porto list. The waiter seemed as excited by my selection as I was and it was a fine glass of wine.
