Anybody else notice this guy creeping around some posts on here???

Who is that lil creeper on the bottom of some pages? Look at him with his lil beady bi-speckled eyes. You click him and that pop up box comes up. I'm using ad blocker, but this sure looks like an ad to me, what is it? Do any of you know? Is he a part of Chow?

  1. It's a company that pushes the ads at the bottom of the page (not visible to you due to Adblocker) to the Chowhound site.

So that would bring me to my next questions, why doesn't ad block block him? That's what's confusing me, it seems as if Chow is allowing him or he is part of chow rather than an ad?

      1. re: jrvedivici

Someone with more technical expertise will have to answer that for you, Im afraid.

        1. re: carolinadawg

I don't blame you, I think he's looking right at you Dawg. I'd change my phone number if I were you, this guy is a stalker.

***OMG don't look down....he's on this thread, he followed me here!!!!

          1. re: jrvedivici

I use AdBlock Plus, and I don't see him, jrvedivici.

Need to tighten up the block parameters on AdBlock Plus to make him go away. Maybe you can right-click the little orange beady eye and see if it can be blocked that way.

    2. I was curious about that a few weeks ago and Google brought me here:

      1. ***HELP***

Please see Linda Whits advice to me in this thread. I did what she said, I right clicked on this guy, I blocked him using ad-block and he went away!! But so did my ability to respond to posts! Look all I'm offered is "recommend or link" I lost my ability to respond to posts!?!?!? (Yes I know a dream come true for some of you)

Seriously though....I've going into other threads and I can Reply to an OP as I'm doing now, but I am not able to respond to any posts inside a thread!?!?!?!

        HELP!!! What did I do????

Happened to me once when I was playing around with adblock. I was trying to get ride of those recommended posts on the side, and the social media links (ad block usually gets these, but not on CH). I also lost my ability to post altogether or read threads, once I got rid of that blocking parameter I got all my content and abilities back. Ad Block is good but not perfect.
If I could, I'd get rid of everything on CH besides posts. I don't want any of the stuff on the bottom (features, recipes, videos, etc) or anything on the side like recommended, trending or related stuff, I never clock it and it's just annoying clutter.

          1. re: EatFoodGetMoney

I'M BACK!!! Ok so I un-blocked my changes for this site and my ability to respond to individual posts has returned. Boy this is complicated stuff!! Thanks for the help.

So what's with EatFoodGetMoney? Are you a professional eater?

            1. re: jrvedivici

Ya, I'm not so good at figuring this stuff out either, I gotta learn some basic code writing skills.

Nah, not a professional eater. Just kind of a play on f*** b***** get money, but more CH appropriate of course.

          2. re: jrvedivici

I believe that AdBlock allows a "sliding scale" as to how much you want to block on a site. So perhaps by clicking-to-block on that orange beady little eye, it also includes the ability to post within a thread.

So I guess you'll just have to deal with the little orange beady eye staring at you. I'm glad you're back. I promise I didn't tell you that upthread to get rid of you. I like your silliness. Even when you're being serious. :-)

            1. re: LindaWhit

Yes it gave me that slide thing but I had no idea what I was doing, I was treating it like a slide trombone, I just picked a spot and the guy disappeared so I thought I did it. Nope I knocked out half my functionality too! Complicated stuff! I'm doing playing, I guess I'll just get use to the guy staring at me.

              1. re: jrvedivici

It's like the Droid Eye or the Terminator Eye staring at you. :-P

            2. re: jrvedivici

The purple box with white type is Ghostery. I don't know exactly how it works, but it's keeping the sites listed from keeping tabs on you. You can keep the box from popping up, but I don't remember any longer how.

            3. If I understand correctly, this stalker icon watches what we do and recommends links based our own personal online habits? If so, I'm a little disturbed about what it's recommending to me, including "Fatty Liver Disease: 10 Common Symptoms" and several links with "Worst Foods" in their titles!

              1. re: drongo

Lol, I've got "Woman kills herself, husband, at supermarket". I hate to think what makes that approp for me.

                1. re: drongo

Now that's pretty funny because while I have that lil guy on the bottom of my page, Ad-block I assume is blocking his recommendations. So I get the beady eye'd guy, but no recommendations.

I'm still a bit confused if he is actually a part of Chow or an ad.

                  1. re: jrvedivici

It's an outside service, contracted w/CH, that funnels "relevant" advertisers to Chow/CH.

                2. just clicked on the icon by accident-
get rid of it-are you making money from this

                  1. looks like he's a sneaky part of Chow -- yep, paid ads.

from a Google search for "outbrain" --

"Outbrain is a content recommendation platform whose eponymous content marketing module offers to help Internet publishers increase web traffic to their websites. Wikipedia"

Hope Adblock figures out how to get rid of this one quickly.

They already do - this is what I see from Outbrain: the little head with glasses, and the words "Recommended by" - all in pale gray, and always at the bottom of a thread. Easy enough to overlook/no longer see.

                      1. re: LindaWhit

it's in the right-hand column for me -- grey until I happen to roll over it

                        1. re: sunshine842

Ahh, yes. Just tried the rollover and she got some orange-colored hair. :-)
