I have a confession to make. This weekend I put Kraft Thousand Island dressing on a spinach salad.

I'm sorry.

  1. I just lit a candle for you at my parish church. You may need to resort to an exorcism if this persists.

I just scheduled a reconciliation with my parish priest.

    2. You should apologize.

Spinach goes with Kraft Catalina dressing.

      1. Next thing you know and you'll be dabbing the corners of a Patty Melt into a little side dish of 1000 Island.

Oh, did I say that out loud? :x

Thousand Island is an acceptable condiment for a sandwich or French fries.

          1. re: jpc8015

But I don't think it is acceptable for a hotdog.

                1. re: jpc8015

Pastrami, kraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island on a hotdog? That is one big hotdog. ; )

                  1. re: John E.

I don't think there was pastrami on the one I had. I do remember it being awesome though.

                    1. re: jpc8015

No pastrami- that's what the hot dog is for.
                      Swiss, thousand island, kraut.

                      1. re: jpc8015

Every Reuban I've ever seen has pastramie in it.

                        1. re: John E.

                          It's not a reuben, it's a reuben hot dog.

                          1. re: monavano

I got that. I have seen Reuban hamburgers and they all had pastramie. (I'm mostly having a little fun with this, the same as the hotdog/sandwich thread.)

                            1. re: John E.

Maybe 'Reubans' always come with 'pastramie' :-D

            1. I grew up with bottle dressing.
Mom never made a vinaigrette- her homemade dressing was actually Thousand Island.
              Ketchup and mayo.

I always have bottle and jarred dressings.
My current obsession is any and all Opa yogurt dressings.

In fact, I think I'm going to need a 12-step program.

You never heard of fresh bottled dressing...Good Seasons?..fresh water, oil, vinegar and a packet>>>>>

                1. re: PHREDDY

Bottled dressing? Not on my fresh salad! That ad just cracked me up (who knows why) a hundred years ago.

A loooong time ago! Although it is still made,

                2. re: monavano

I do enjoy the Opa ranch as a dip for veggies.

                  1. re: monavano

My favorite bottled dressing was Bob's Big Boy Blue Cheese.

                  2. Last time I actually put Thousand Island on my food, I was probably about seven, (50+ years ago) and I was distracted at the dinner table and poured it on my tuna casserole instead of my salad.
I was so embarrassed, I cried (I had three sisters - you can imagine their response!), and I haven't wanted it since.
Thank goodness that my mother (while trying not to laugh) dished me up a new plate of tuna casserole. I still like tuna casserole, though.

                      1. A sure-fire way to make sure you don't outlive your money.

                        1. i put ketchup on my sandwiches, especially when that sandwich is a hot dog. ;-) i'm so ashamed.

                          1. There's a bigger issue here. What are your plans for the rest of the bottle? :)

My parents were supposed to come visit a couple weekends back and 1000 island is the only dressing my dad likes. They weren't able to make it but we still had the bottle. They are coming next weekend so it will get some use then.

                            2. I just sat down after making 1000 Island to go on our salad tonight! How funny. We're having carnitas along with my homage (if you will) to that crappy Mexican restaurant salad of iceberg, carrots, peas and beets. For whatever reason, that just appeals to me every now and then.

It was my father's favorite and we cracked each other up when I was a kid by calling it Archipelago Dressing. My mom and brother would just ignore us...

                                1. Was this just an inebriated mistake or the beginnings of a torrid affair?

but whose dressing did you use?

                                      1. thousand island dressing
                                        sweet chilli sauce
                                        stir together

I use a diced onion, hormel chili no beans, a few squirts of tabasco along with Velveeta nuked till melted, stirring it along.

                                              2. My favorite neighborhood tonkatsu place in Tokyo served salads with Thousand Island dressing and paprika.

It's not something I eat at any other time though...

                                                1. Thousand Island was my dad's favorite dressing.

I have it sometimes in his stead.

Thousand Island is not my dad's favorite dressing. It is his only dressing.

I don't love it for salads but I will happily dip my fries in it and put it on my Reuben.

It's the "secret" ingredient in many a good thing.

it must be a generational man thing; it's my FIL's only dressing also.
although my husband also grew up eating lamb chops marinated in French dressing. (which i guess is just Thousand Island without the relish?)

                                                          I love them both.

                                                        2. I put 1000 Island on my burgers all the time. On occasion, I dip my pizza crust or fries in Ranch Dressing (or Bacon Ranch). I marinate shrimp for the barbie in French Dressing. And last night I drizzled pineapple balsamic vinegar on vanilla ice cream. I am indeed going to culinary hell. Wanna make something of it??

                                                            Ranch is great for dipping.

                                                              sweet chili sauce

                                                              Sriracha sauce
                                                              pinch of salt

Mix the bejeezus out of it, and schmear on light toasted sourdough bread. Top with slices of roasted chicken, roasted red peppers, whatever cheese your heart desires, some crunchy lettuce or peppery arugula, top with other slice of sourdough, and you're good to go.
