OMF(ucking)G ... Horchata Soft Serve

Did you know you can find horchata soft service ice cream in LA?

Well, you do now.

Four, Etc. in Koreatown (in a strip mall on the NW Corner of 3rd/New Hampshire) makes horchata ice cream, as well as other flavors, including a pretty good bite on Milk Bar's "milk and cereal".

But don't go today. Ice cream machine broken ... Went hoping to get my second dose in a week's time, and utter face-plant.

  1. nice find

    1. Okay, so was this a Mr. Boba? That's what pops up when I put in that address...

      The ice cream sounds awesome!

        Same strip mall.

Here's the Facebook link (which I hate adding, btw, but just for you).

          Thanks Ipsedixit!

I didn't know that facebook links caused you pain but I'm grateful for your help and want you to know that your suffering was not in vain - because that brunch also looks amazing.

          Must check this place out!

      2. The horchata hard serve (is that a thing?) at Fosselman's in Alhambra is fantastic but soft serve sounds even better. I'll have to give it a try.

        Thanks for the rec!

        1. They claim to have invented this at Momofuku Milk Bar in NYC. Do you think that's true, or was it already a thing?

Based on zero evidence, I'm gonna call bullshit.

            1. re: JeMange

One thing we can all agree on, the horchata soft serve was being served @ momofuku as early as 2009.

          2. wasn't this a flavor awhile back at Yogurtland? Or was it dulce de leche?

            2. Fosselman's has Horchata Ice Cream, and so many more flavors!

                Still?

I know it was there for CdM, along with a really good Sweet Corn, but I thought was just for May.

                1. re: ipsedixit

I think they do it year round, it is a big seller. Was there today and had the fresh peach. OMG

                  1. re: Burger Boy

I've had their peach and it was ok, not great. I think they do better with non-fruit flavors.

                    1. re: ipsedixit

I think because it is fresh it can vary a bit! Do you have another place for fresh peach ice cream?

                            2. re: Servorg

for the fans of mother moo, some of their flavors that are available for delivery this week from Good Eggs are:
organic ice cream one pint to 64 oz ( i think that their website is confusing for ordering the 64 oz amount, so i'd call in the order for that amount)--
                              PEACH (for ipse)
                              strawberry
                              cornflakes
                              salty chocolate
                              vanilla
                              vanilla crunch
                              salted butter caramel

                              No Moo Wise cream pints--
                              olithic banana
                              chocoloco
                              chocolate pimenton picante
                              coco vanilla date-full

No Moo Wise Cream single servings--
                              After Eight
                              Banana Olithic
                              Carajillo
                              Chocolate Pimenton Picante
                              Mo' Berries Sherbet
                              Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge
                              Peppermint Candy Bliss
                              Yerba Mate and Raisons

                2. To be clear (their Facebook didn't really help), the Horchata soft serve is there every day? Or do flavors change daily/weekly/monthly or something?

                  1. Just came from Scoops Heliotrope and saw that they, too, are serving Horchata ice cream.

                      Who's next?

                      Baskin Robbins?

I hear bacon is looking for a compassion to go shark jumping.

                      1. re: ipsedixit

Which place is doing bacon ice cream? I recall Scoops and maybe Sweet Rose Creamery doing versions. Anyone tried any of them? I have to say that I have a hard time resisting the bacon maple donuts at Primo's. How about horchata and bacon?

                        1. re: ipsedixit

If the LA board is any indication, I think "pastramied" is going to be the next bacon, locally at least.

Pastramied duck. Pastramied pork belly. Pastramied tempeh. When we hit pastramied bacon we'll know our civilization is on the downswing.

                          1. re: cacio e pepe

                            Pastrami, or maybe lamb burgers.

True, true. I don't think if mind either way.

                            2. re: cacio e pepe

They used to have pastrami smoked salmon at barney greengrass

                            3. re: ipsedixit

McDonalds is now selling a horchata "frappe".

                              1. re: Savour

Dommy! has tried it and gone back for seconds. She is someone who goes to McD's once every 5 years for a big mac

                                1. re: Mattapoisett in LA

Ack! Outted me. I've only had it once... but I would go back. again. and again. and again. It's really good the flavor to horchata is very true with the rice and almond and cinnamon. If I was feeling particularly hedonistic, I would pair it with the Chicken and Waffle tenders at Popeyes. Nothing else at McD's is all that good (Since they currently aren't serving McWings)

                                  --Dommy!

came here to post that scoops highland park had horchata on saturday! it was awesome.

                            5. horchata frappes and lattes at mcdonalds....

                              1. It seems so fitting to put this in a churro ice cream sandwich, as Sylvia Yoo has done.

                                http://www.churroborough.com/flavors/

Yet the soft serve's consistency may render this invention an ephemeral delicacy.

Justin Bolois covered these churro ice cream sandwiches for CHOW here: http://www.chow.com/food-news/152029/...

One of my fondest food memories is eating churros stuffed with dolce de leche that were served fresh and hot out of a fryer loaded in the back of a VW van outside my school and the thought of Churro Ice Cream sandwiches is kind of blowing my mind. I really, really wish I lived closer to LA. Or had a reason other than "Must. Eat. Churro. Ice. Cream. Sandwich." to go there.

                                  2. LMA(ss)O, everyone knows what omfg stands for

                                    1. is it non-dairy?

sweet rose at brentwood country mart--not sure about their other locations--has non-dairy horchata scooped ice cream which is pretty good. not amazing, but good enough.

(if they drizzled some bourbon sauce on top, maybe i'd think more favorably of it.)
