Hover over avatars - no longer enlarges

Ever since you changed the look of the profile page with the larger avatar and an oval "box" around the search box, when I got to a thread and hover over someone's avatar in a post, it no longer enlarges so as to see what the picture is.

I'm using Chrome, Windows 7 OS.

  1. That's it!!!! If they don't bring back the hover avatar enlarge feature I'm outta here!!! There are certain lines that shouldn't be crossed and Chow owes that to us!

Excellent use of the number of exclamation marks with your outrage, jrvedivici. :-)

But I'd *still* like to know why the avatars don't enlarge a bit when you hover over them. They used to (it was something that had been asked way back when when the site was redesigned).

      1. re: LindaWhit

I'll buy you an old school Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass you can hold over avatars for a similar affect.

        1. re: jrvedivici

Only if I get a deerstalker cap and a cape to go with the spyglass.

          1. re: LindaWhit

Can never leave good enough alone.

            1. re: jrvedivici

What? I believe they're back in fashion. Well, maybe not the deerstalker.

Yeah, I saw she likes the "sleet n shit" (tm) look. I just want my pop-up avatars back! LOL

Just one step to world domination. Muha. Muhaahaa. Muhaaahaaahahahahahaha. >strokes cat<

You can dominate the world, lingua. I just want my pop-up avatars back!

            Bueller? :::knocking::: Bueller? Anyone?

            1. re: LindaWhit

Let's see, you originally posted on Thursday, so that means in theory if anyone in tech even read your post on that day, they probably didn't open a ticket until Friday, which means the first time anyone would even think of addressing the issue would be Monday or even Tuesday depending how many other items related to the latest push are ahead of it. So, not today. Not tomorrow. Maybe the next day. See you next week.

              1. re: Samalicious

It's what one expects from tech support, no matter what company you work for or what site you're on.

But a simple "Yes, we removed it from the software" or "We're not sure what's going on" would be nice.

          1. re: greygarious

            SERIOUSLY.
I'm only at about 25% compliance with my "location at the bottom" as it is.

BUT -> another question-> there are at least two folks who now don't have an avatar at all.
No First Initial in a circle, no image, nada.
All I can guess is that these people replaced their avatars with something tiiiiiiiny OR there is a scaling issue with what they had.
My Virginia-in-a-circle looks "double outlined" to me, also.

            Kris now in DC/NoVA

            1. re: Kris in Beijing

At the time, years ago, when avatars were introduced to CH profiles, several posters I'm aware of adopted a plain white filler as their avatar - a negative avatar, if you will - and more may have done so since. So what you may be seeing are actual avatars that are nothing but a white space, rather than an error.

              1. re: Caitlin McGrath

When they took away the red background and white knife and fork, I had saved it and made that my avatar while those not specifically adding an avatar got the letter. I played around with them and finally decided on one that I have used for a couple of years. The white thing will probably get old soon enough.

Being a Minneapolitan, I miss your Red Owl!

          2. Gimme back the hover over avatar enlargement! I hate the empty circles. That seems superfluous. I also strongly dislike the thin line circles around everything. That's just lousy design.

            1. re: Gio

              Huh.
Then you must HATE mine -- I put a thin circle around mine when I made it... so now it has what seems to be a line and a "shadow line."
              .
But, you can't really tell b/c there's no "hover-for-larger" option anymore.
              .

              Kris now in DC/NoVA

              1. re: Kris in Beijing

No, Kris, I don't hate yours, in fact I don't even know what it is. It's mysterious. I do see the shadow line, as you call it, and it simply adds to the whole design. I change avatars for Holidays.

                1. re: Gio

I spent a solid afternoon half watching dvr'ed episodes of Chopped and designing my avatar.
It's the map of Virginia with a red arrow pointing down to the DC/NoVA area with a caption that says
                  "Now Here!!"
I kept adjusting colour, size, and resolution so in the "expanded" version all of that would be clear.

                  1. re: Kris in Beijing

I never enlarged your avatar, Kris, but I thought it was a witch on a broom. There's an argument to be made for bringing back the hover over enlargement.

                    1. re: EM23

                      Oh. My. Gosh.

                      I'll be altering that ASAP.

                      1. re: Kris in Beijing

I hope you didn't take that as snark or an insult because it absolutely wasn't. :-)

                        1. re: EM23

Can I just say that's one of the reasons I don't like the new No Hover Enlargement installment. As if anyone cares. OTOH... NHE has many... oh never mind.

                          1. re: EM23

Oh no -- not insulted at all!!

However, I find it hilarious that it appeared to be a witch (I can see that now) since how I hope to be seen is essentially diametrically opposed to that!

                            1. re: Kris in Beijing

Is it the state of Virginia? ( I'm going with your handle being an attempt at misdirection)

                              1. re: jrvedivici

I guess here at CH we really don't read profiles : )

I lived in Beijing from 2004-2011, after being in Korea.
When I moved back to The States, I "landed" in the Metro DC--Northern Virginia area.

'Hounds kept saying snarky things to me when I'd comment on the DC Board or the Southeast Board, as if I couldn't have a clue.

I tried changing my avatar to "Now In NoVA" but all text really didn't work, so [copy of previous comment]
I spent a solid afternoon half watching dvr'ed episodes of Chopped and designing my avatar.

However, without the bump up in size option, evidently it just looked like an eastern-facing witch.

Holy sh*t I was right? Hahaha you know what they say about a broken clock!!!! I crack myself up!

              2. Hi LindaWhit.

That functionality has been removed in the most recent design updates.

                1. re: DeborahL

Bummer. It was a good one, since some of the avatars are impossible to figure out without a slightly larger picture. But thanks for the update, DeborahL.

                  1. re: LindaWhit

First it was the artificial crab in our crab-cakes in the chow cafeteria. Now this....when are these cut backs going to stop?

                    1. re: jrvedivici

Soon it'll just be the cracker filler in those crab cakes.

We're DEFINITELY not going to get any red staplers, I can guarantee you that.

                  2. re: DeborahL

Is there a particular reason for removing that functionality?

                    1. re: John E.

Hey John, I'm the new Product Manager here, so let me step in for Deborah.

We removed the overlay feature because we plan to make profile icons easier to see in the near future. We've added it prominently to the site header so far, but we're working on more improvements for elsewhere! We'll keep you posted going forward.

                      1. re: patsully

So why not leave the overlay feature until the new profile icons are ready to roll into production?

                        1. re: gaffk

Your avatar looks like a black kitty with a hipster white beard.

Her name is Malgato, but she's more chicken hawk than hipster.

                            Yours is a snow puppy?

                            1. re: gaffk

Oh, if ONLY we had the ability to hover the mouse over the avatar to see what the picture was. ;-)

                              1. re: LindaWhit

Maybe we can request that as a feature in an upcoming release?

                              2. re: gaffk

More like a couch potato, leading a life of leisure.
Malgato = bad kitty? Nah, can't be. There are no bad kitties. :-)

We'll try to maintain whenever we can, but in this case, we needed to make way for future improvements in advance.

None yet. We're working through some cleanup from the Conversations launch and then we'll be able to come back to this to improve on the old version.

                          2. Are we there yet? Sorry to be a pest but I miss the larger avatars and would like to switch back to my old Spoonbridge and Cherry image. But, if you can't see what it is...
