We'll be staying in Montalcino proper for 3 nights in early July, with car. Any thoughts on narrowing this list (culled mainly from this Board), including on lunch vs. dinner? Thanks in advance. Also would welcome any thoughts on where to eat in or near Pitigliano.

Il Rossellino (pienza)

Boccon di vino (montalcino)

Taverna del grappolo blu (montalcino)

Il pozzo (Sant'angelo in colle)

Locanda pane e vino (between montalcino and buonconvento)

Enoteca osteria osticcio (montalcino)

Poggio antico (?)

Ristorante i lecci (near castiglione d'orcia)

La porta (monticchiello)

Il Leccio (Sant'angelo in colle)

A gambe di Gatto (montepulciano)

Da Roberto (San Giovanni d'Asso)

Ristorante oreade (castiglioncello del trinoro)

La bandita townhouse (pienza)

Dopolavoro (la foce)

  1. Are you going to do a day trip to Montepulciano or Pienza? If not it is a kind of long trip on windy roads for just a dinner.

For just the area of Montalcino I would suggest this:

    Boccon di vino (montalcino)

    Taverna del grappolo blu (montalcino)

Il pozzo (Sant'angelo in colle) - first choice

Locanda pane e vino (between montalcino and buonconvento)

Il Leccio (Sant'angelo in colle) - second choice, good for lunch sitting outside in the sun

Another good light lunch option is the Fortezza in Montalcino, which I'm sure you're going to visit anyway. They have many brunellos by the glass to taste as well.

Thanks. How far ahead of time should one reserve in these parts?

        A day.

    2. Definitely il Rossellino. A mom and pop place seating maybe twenty right in the center of town.

      1. You can remove A Gambe di Gatto from your list. The owners are divorcing (or have divorced), and the restaurant is closed.
