Giin Thai Canteen - South Berkeley

Just opened in the old LA Bayou space at 3278 Adeline. Berkeleyside reports same owners as Gecko Gecko. Sign in the window says hours are Mon.-Fri. 11:30-3 and 4:30-8, the longer hours on the web site may be their eventual target. Closed for the holiday this Monday.

  1. tried pad thai with chicken a month or so ago. chicken was dry. flavors subtle. dish had more tofu in it than chicken. tender tofu was better.

    recent y. reviews flavorable.

    1. Ordered some food to go yesterday and was quite pleased.
-Tom Yum had a clean flavor, and a bit of a chile kick.
-Yellow Curry with Chicken was also simple, clean flavor. they were quite accomodating to preferences for veggies included. Portion of chicken was on the smaller side, but price was as well.

      Most important:
-They are refraining from using the ubiquitous sugar all too overwhelming in Thai food around here.
-Great option of brown rice (actually more like red thai rice)

It's a welcomed neighborhood resto addition to the South Berkeley/North Oakland corridor. I will be back soon.

I agree with your comments though I thought the Proteins were a little skimpy for the Price. We had:
        Khao Soi Thai
The Picked Greens were actually sweeter than I was used to but homemade and since the Curry(Soup) was not sweetened much worked fine. Curry was much improved by mixing in their house made Chili Paste. 2 drumette size pieces of Chicken seemed tight for the price. Noodles were well cooked. Over all the dish was good.
        Khao Phad Poo.
Was fairly unimpressive just kind of Crabby and Oily with out much else going on.
I too am glad to see this addition to the Neighborhood but would not suggest that people drive over here to go to it. There is better Thai to be had in Oakland. Good for a 5 min walk though.
Looks like we are getting a Ethiopian Restaurant on Adeline as well I saw Permits up in the window a few Doors down

where do you go for Thai food in oaktown ?

            1. re: moto

Chai Thai can be good, I've found it inconsistent.

If traffic's not bad, I'd rather schlep to Ran Kanom.

              1. re: Robert Lauriston

or Lers Ros which is closer to Oakland

                1. re: chefj

If there's no traffic on the bridge.

Depends on the day and time. I always check Google Maps.

That's true for just about everywhere these days.

Different patterns, though. 80 to Ran Kanom is usually clear by the time I like to eat dinner. Later in the week the toll plaza into SF backs up and stays that way until late.
