Low carb frozen cocktails

I love a nice frozen slushy cocktail in the summer. I bought some Baja Bob's Triple Citrus Margarita mix and it's OK. I think I can make a better & cheaper version using sugar free powdered drink mixes like Crystal Light or Wyler's (maybe @ double strength to allow for dilution)& SF Orange Syrup. Does anyone make frozen low carb drinks/? What's your method. Does anyone make a SF Limeade? I saw a mention of frozen SF lemonade, any good? I realize that when you use SF drink mixes like Crystal Light they contain a lot of chemicals but for me it's the lesser of two evils (eating sugar) and this is cocktail hour not health food hour.

  1. Why not avoid cocktails with a lot of sugar in them, rather than using artificial flavors and sweeteners?

Your cocktails will never taste better than those (IMO crappy) mixers.

A nice (gin) Martini would have almost no sugar.

      Re-read the OP's first sentence.

Zackly-when my husband was doing the whole low-carb thing he liked throwing a bunch of ice in the blender with diet ginger beer and rum, kind of a slushy dark and stormy

Gosling's diet ginger beer is to die for.

        1. re: mcf

That is his ginger beer of choice!

    2. Why not just make your own concentrate at home, freeze in cubes and store in a Ziplock. One cube per pint or quart?

I'd rather not tie up freezer space. I am hoping to find a sugar free limeade powder mix and go from there.

I wonder if there's any lime extract at those links we posted for you in another thread? Just add sweetener and water as needed? Oh, yeah...http://www.beanilla.com/lime-extract

          1. re: mcf

do you think that would work better than this lime syrup?

It's a pricey way to go, but a lot of folks like their syrups and Da Vinci's. I'd go with the extract and sweetener because stuff is always too sweet tasting to me when it's pre made. But if you want instant, it's worth a shot, right?

      2. What about ice, spiced rum with a TBS of coconut milk (.8 carbs) and 1/2 oz of pineapple juice (2 carbs)

        1. Why can't you just use limes?

            He doesn't want to.

            1. re: mcf

OP doesn't say anything about not wanting to use limes. I just don't understand wanting to use a mix when a 2:1:1 margarita is the most perfect thing ever.

              1. re: sarahendipity

MCF & sarahendipity....I apologize for my ignorance on the subject. I thought that much lime juice would cause blood sugar spikes In my mind all fresh fruit juices are taboo but apparently not. Although you currently need a bank loan to buy limes, that would be the best way to go, wouldn't it? Are there any good brands of frozen lime juice?
                Thanks!

                1. re: zackly

Lime juice would be too carby... 20 grams per cup. If you use that much, that's a sugar bomb.

          2. Low Carb Frozen Strawberry Margarita recipe:
I've been working on this. It's pretty good, IMHO

            Low Carb Margarita

I cup- Sugar Free Margarita Mix ( I use Baja Bob’s)
            4oz. Tequila
1 cup Frozen Strawberries (no added sugar type)
            1 Tbls. Erythritol (sweetener)
Juice of ½ Lime ( or natural lime extract)
            ½ tsp Orange Extract
            2 cups- Ice
            Directions:
Note: The colder everything is, the better to create and maintain a good slurry
Place blender container in freezer beforehand, if possible
Place all the ingredients in the blender and puree until smooth
Yield: 2 x 16 oz. Plastic Solo Cups

              How many carbs per serving?

              1. re: mcf

About ten net grams or less of carbs per 16oz. serving. This is really a double sized cocktail. See my imperfect analysis below:

                Low Carb Margarita-carb count

I cup- Sugar Free Margarita Mix ( I use Baja Bob’s)-zero carbs
4oz. Tequila (100% Agave tequila has zero carbs)
1 cup Frozen Strawberries (no added sugar type)- 15 net grams carbs
                1 Tbls. Erythritol (sweetener)
Juice of ½ Lime ( or natural lime extract) (minimal carbs)
                ½ tsp Orange Extract
                2 cups- Ice
                Directions:
Note: The colder everything is, the better to create and maintain a good slurry
Place blender container in freezer beforehand, if possible
Place all the ingredients in the blender and puree until smooth
Yield: 2 x 16 oz. Plastic Solo Cups

if you really want to go lower you can skip the strawberries but it doesn't stay "emusified" for long without them

                1. re: zackly

I don't subtract fiber for net carbs. First of all, you digest almost half of it, and second, it never seems to lower a spike.

Looks like a really good reduction from the real thing, overall, especially for such a large serving. Be sure to test before and one hour after drinking. And don't forget that alcohol will usually lower or completely prevent a glucose spike, at least with food it does. Keeps the liver from secreting glucose, I think.

Your meter will tell you if you should reduce by a few berries and re-test.

                  Bottoms up!
