Report on Montreal Restaurants that we visited-long
Thank you all for the recommendations and advice that we received for our Montreal trip. Dining was the highlight of our visit. We started with dinner at Cafe Ferreira, a last minute impromptu reservation. The restaurant exudes energy and we had wonderful food starting with a gazpacho made with fresh tomatoes and avocado and lobster, warm, filleted sardines on melba toast with sund ried tomato puree. The two appetizers were fabulous. We followed with mixed shellfish grill with salmon, lobster and giant shrimp and the Cataplano, a bouillabaisse style stew with four kinds of fish, clams, mussels and lobster tail. The presentations were awesome. For dessert, we shared a chilled avocado and lemon sorbet. This was the best meal of our trip.
Next day, we toured Jean Talon market and enjoyed the colorful produce displays. Great butcher, cheese shop and fish shops. We obtained pastries at pain d'or that were mediocre. The apples at this time of year were sensational.
For dinner, we went to Au Pied du Cochon. A very warm and friendly restaurant with a unique concept and menu. We obtained some great recommendations from the server and enjoyed melted foie gras fritters, the Cochonnailes plater with rillettes , sauscisson, spicy pork sausage, foie gras and gizzards. It was a great appetizer. The endive, apple, blue cheese and baby beet greens salad was generous and nicely seasoned. For plats, we shared the canned duck, a unique combination of a magret breast and foie gras. We also enjoyed veal leg from the eastern townships on a bed of polenta and small red eggplants. A rustic and lively restaurant that would be wonderful on a chilly evening.
The next day, we enjoyed bagels from St. Vivateur that were outstanding and served warm followed by smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz's. It was worth doing once and it was fun spot to meet other people.
For dinner, we enjoyed Brunoise. The restaurant was great value and the food was deftly prepared. We started with panna cotta of green tomatoes with beets and caramelized onions--a fabulous amuse bouche. We shared asparagus with cepes and a bell pepper and eggplant tart. We enjoyed filet and sweetbreads for entrees and panna cotta for dessert. A very good meal with warm and friendly service. However, I agree with other writers on this board that it is a restaurant with a style that you could find in any number of cities.
On Sunday, we had lunch at L'Express, a classic bistro. We enjoyed the bone marrow on toast with gray salt and oysters from New Brunswick. We had the steak tartare and veal kidneys. Dessert was baba rhum. The food was very good but quite starch intensive. Potatoes were prominently featured. On Sunday evening, having pigged out for the past few days, we took a break and headed to Quebec City.
