Ads That Play Automatically

So, this evening, when reading threads, video ads have been playing automatically at the right, without apparent buttons for stopping them.

  1. All day. A new annoyance.

      1. re: c oliver

That's it, c. I had ABP turned off for just a second...

      2. To my knowledge we don't generally permit ads like this, but our ad team doesn't always catch them for various reasons. Can you take a screen shot of the offending player when next you see it? That should give the ad team a lead with which to track it down. Thank you, and our apologies for the unpleasantness.

I was having this problem too, but today it's this pleasing image instead.

Spoke too soon. The Greenies ad. It kept playing on repeat but the audio comes on only when my curser hovers over it.

              1. re: EM23

I'm careful not to hover! It still happens...

                  1. re: sandylc

I have to say, this thread is reading to me like this:

OP: "My faucet is running non-stop!"
                    > "Have you tried turning it off?"
                    OP: "It just keeps running!"
                    > "If you turn it off, the water will stop running."
OP: "Even when I walk in the other room, it still runs! Why don't you fix it?"
                    > "BUT, have you tried *turning it off*?

                    Ad. Block. Plus.

                    1. re: Mr Taster

bahahaha, all of our posts in this thread are probably gonna get axed.

                      1. re: Mr Taster

Sorry I don't sit by my computer waiting for your posts.

                        1. re: Mr Taster

Downloaded it twice recently, due to this site, but it doesn't take.

                          1. re: coll

Which browser? Some ad blockers run better on different browsers.

                            1. re: MplsM ary

I'm almost always on IE although I have other browsers I use occasionally. I know it's a crumby browser but I'm just used to it.

                              1. re: coll

Well then Mr Taster is right, Adblock Plus is what you want: https://adblockplus.org

I am running IE 10 and use it without problem.

If you are paying Geek Squad for monitoring, and it won't cost you anything, I'd call them.

                                1. re: MplsM ary

I will, probably today, there is something else I wanted them to check out too.....when I remember what it was ;-)

Just looked at my programs and all I see is Simple Adblock, so I got rid of that and left feedback for them, supposedly they will be in touch. Now I will try to install again, to see if that helped. Thanks for your advice and encouragement!

PS Oh well I installed again but I still have ads. Back to the drawing board.

                  2. re: Engineering

I'm glad to hear that you don't usually allow these ads. I've had a Nellie's Cage Free Eggs ad start autoplaying a few times. Please get rid of it! I don't use ad blockers, because I want to support sites that give me great content for free. But I'll just stop coming to the site if it startles me with autoplay ads too many times.

                    Thanks!

                    1. re: maillard

                      "Startles" is a perfect description.

                      1. re: maillard

I see the Nellie's Cage Free Eggs ads at the top of the site when I use my Kindle - but there's no auto-play ad. It just usually scrolls through a couple of screens, but no audio.

                        1. re: LindaWhit

I've been tending to keep my speakers turned off, getting used to it at this point. If something elsewhere looks fascinating, I remember to turn them up now.

                    2. I can't catch it. The ads are shuffling like a deck of cards. Today's auto-play ad is the Minnesota one about wearing seatbelts.

                      1. Now Crest 3D White and Duncan Donuts Coffee Creamer.

                        1. And now Nissan. This is looking like how Chowhound intends things to be.

                          Very annoying and off-putting.

                          Please stop.

Sandy, are you encountering these on the Minneapolis-St. Paul board specifically, or everywhere on the site?

                            1. re: Engineering

Everywhere. Just came from the peanut butter balls recipe request in Home Cooking, and a dog treat video played with a Nissan commercial audio to accompany it!

                              1. re: sandylc

Have you tried adblock plus? Or are you on a computer where you can't download stuff?

                                1. re: EatFoodGetMoney

I can download but it's like I didn't do anything. It downloads, but then nothing is blocked. I used to have it here so no reason why the glitch.

                                  1. re: coll

Did you install Malwarebytes first and do a thorough sweeping of your system for malware? (This is separate and apart from any antivirus software you may use.)

If you've got Malware sending ads and annoying hoverlinks into your browser, Ad Block Plus likely won't be able to stop those.

You have to apply Ad Block Plus to a clean system for it to work right. All these annoyances might not be Chowhound's fault.

BTW, Malwarebytes didn't find anything on my system...

                                      1. re: sandylc

That's good news... did the ad blocking work?

                                        Mr Taster

                                        1. re: Mr Taster

The jury is still out. It was sporadic, so we'll see how it goes.

                                      2. re: Mr Taster

I have the system that Best Buys installed and monitors for me, if I have to I can call them but this is the only issue I've had in the last year or so. And I'm really paranoid in general about the internet.

                                      3. re: coll

                                        Coll,
I also had a problem but fixed it. Go to your program files, there should be two icons for Adblock. Select first icon and choose repair; repeat for the second one. Refresh your Chowhound page.

                                        1. re: EM23

Just looked and it's not even there, despite downloading it twice. I wonder if Webroot is blocking it, even though it didn't say so. I can call Geek Squad tomorrow if anyone thinks I should.

                                          1. re: EM23

I don't have any icons except one for Simple Adblock and I removed it. Didn't help, sad to say.

                                      4. re: sandylc

sandylc, it's possible that you have some malware installed on your system which is pushing ads through independent of the Chowhound site. I don't know that for a fact, but it's possible.

In any case, I *highly* recommend that you install Malwarebytes and do a thorough scrubbing of your system.

                                        https://www.malwarebytes.org/

And as *soon* as you're done, install AD BLOCK PLUS. Like, immediately after. I can't say enough how magical this software is.

                                        https://adblockplus.org/

It makes ads disappear. Seriously, they just vanish.

For example, when I watch The Daily Show streaming on the Comedy Central website, there are no commercials. At all. Fade to commercial break, fade up to next segment. As if the commercials simply never existed. I suffered for years seeing the same horrible commercials (which they blare at a much higher volume than the show itself, so you constantly have to adjust your sound settings. Ridiculous!)

Ad Block Plus doesn't work for Hulu-- that't the only caveat. But annoying banner ads and videos? They're a thing of the past. They simply don't appear on my browsers, at all.

                                            2. re: Mr Taster

If I had known that it cancelled ads during videos I would have downloaded it ages ago. Thanks!

                                      5. It appears that some of the ads in question aren't actually autoplay, but rather launched when your mouse rolls over/hovers over the ad. So it's possible to unwittingly launch one of these--happened to me today with the dog food ad in the screen shot I've attached. But we'll continue to keep an eye on this.

                                          Hi- thanks.

I carefully avoid mousing over ads - I am familiar with this icky happenstance.

Mr. Taster's downloads appear to have helped.

                                          Thanks!

This is how my screen looks. Note the utter absence of dog food ads.

If my experience hadn't been going from ads auto-playing without any pause/stop button, to then the image I posted above regarding the "error loading player", to now nothing auto-playing and no errors loading the player, then I would have agreed with you that it was a user-generated problem.

What was reported were true auto-playing ads which have for now gone away.

                                            1. re: RelishPDX

Right - no stop/pause buttons were to be found anywhere....

                                          3. I've noticed this too with the egg ad...While it doesn't play automatically, clever page placement almost ensures your pointer will pass over it, and activate it, no click required

                                            1. Another one autoplaying on a loop. This might end my experiment with not blocking ads on Chowhound.

Thanks. If it happens again I'll snip more of the page so it's easier to track down.

                                                  2. I was just forced to listen one along with the Beatles' "I Want You/She's So Heavy." TTYTT, at first I thought it was some added little Beatles artifact I'd never noticed before (I have headphones on now).

                                                    1. ...could be a dealbreaker. I'm not installing anything to block ads, or helping to report them. Sorry.

                                                      1. I keep getting randomly hit with laundry detergent videos. I had a few programs open simultaneously for work and as soon as I opened the thread with the video playing, my computer slowed down so much that the whole thing froze up for a good 10 minutes.

Of course, the video was off-screen with no buttons to pause it so I had to turn the volume off and wait for it to load and play out.

                                                        REALLY ANNOYING.

                                                        1. It's back. It appears on individual topic pages and is annoying as all Hell.
