"Celestin" - Any 'recent' experiences?

Whilst former super-star like "Via Allegro" has long disappeared on Toronto Life's restaurant review radar. I noticed the 'sans Pascal Rabaud's "Celestin" is still running strong and maintaining similar star status and rating as some of Toronto's finest - Scaramouche, Splendido, George, Edulis, Actinolite...etc to name a few!

They must be doing something right?! Any recent dining experiences from fellow hounds to verify and justify this high rating? Cheers!

  1. Charles, maybe TL hasn't been checking up on the North TO restos because they're so focused on everything south of Bloor?
    Recent reviews on TA are dismal...that says something when TA reviews aren't even positive, doesn't it? http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_...

      Wow!! Never see so many consecutive one star rating on Trip Advisor! Actually kind of makes me curious as to how BAD a restaurant can get!! Ha!

        Or so many people in a row ordering "hard pouched (sic)" eggs!

          Hard pouched eggs are the worst!

    2. It's bad and has been bad for years. It once was great.

      1. Mr. Vuitton and I were last there 2 1/2 years ago. It was all exceptionally underwhelming. I did post here on CH - if you stalk me, you can see the specifics (which I no longer remember).

        We have not bothered to go back; we live near enough that we can let neighbours and friends go. I'm sure if it was back up to some reasonable standard, we would hear about it and try again.

        Instead we have been frequenting L'Avenue for French, and neighbourhood (ish) faves like Quince and Zee Grill. (Looking forward to trying Quince's Little Sister). :)

        1. Have to agree with the others here. We used to love the place way back when. The last time we were there, about 4 years ago, maybe more, just after Pascal left, it was depressingly bad.

          Really upset me at the time to see how a place could go south so fast. I don't know if Pascal was aware, but I'm sure he would have been saddened by it. What surprised me, was I believe the new owner had worked in the kitchen with him for many years - so how could it have gone so bad?

          I recall writing on CH also at the time, gritty, unclean scallops, bland food. Nothing memorable, except for how bad it got.

          No reason to ever go back

            Agreed. It was good back in the day but is now terrible.
