I screwed up....

1 hour into cooking my honey chicken, I accidentally unplugged my crockpot. It sat on my counter for over an hour before I noticed. I couldn't find my digital thermometer, but the sauce it was sitting in was warm to the touch not hot. I have since turned it on high. Do you guys think it's safe to eat?

  1. Yes, I would finish cooking and eat with no worries whatsoever. And I tend to be a worrywart.

Well, it was sitting on low at first and it looked pretty raw.

It looked raw because it was raw. It will cook ok..

Thanks. I figure it was ok, but needed reassurance.

    2. Hi Warmheart -

      It happens.

I note that your first post is 21 minutes ago. So 1.21 hours ago then ?

Crockpot originally on low, medium, or high setting ?

Chicken: how well thawed it was when you started ?

If it looked raw to you, then I would cook it more, perhaps in a separate pan, or a microwave.

The sauce you cooked it in may have been warm as you note, but not necessarily the chicken. I know this may differ from the others, but unless the chicken were cooking for many hours, being more of a dense object in the cooker, both should be hot and not just the sauce.

It was originally set on low and was cooking for about an hour. The chicken thighs were from the refrigerated section of TRader Joe's. There was some ice around the edges if the thighs.

You seem to have switched to Klingon halfway through your post.

      2. Overnight, no way... but one hour? That's no longer than people leave stuff sitting on the counter without even thinking about it. I'm sure it's just fine...

        1. You'll soon find out.
