Italian Cheap Eats
Hi- My wife and I will be traveling in Tuscany this summer. We much prefer a hole in the wall with fantastic food to a fancy restaurant.
Our main destinations are Florence, Siena, Cinque Terre, San Gimignano and Lucca- with a few place in between. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
For lunch in Florence, try this place. Very low maintenance atmosphere with very good, fresh food. We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. In adittion to panini, they also have a few hot dishes; soups, stews, pasta or risotto. It varies from day to day. The address is Via della Condotta 38R.
I would recommend the agriturismo restaurant in the Fattoria Pieve a Salti hotel. The restaurant is called Podere Caprili and it is amazing, while also being extremely laid back. Not sure if you have a car or not, but its about 30 minutes outside of Siena.
Our favorite dinner in Siena was Grotta di Santa Caterina da Bagoda. Food was simple, atmosphere was non fussy and cozy. Wild boar was amazing but what I remember the most is the side of steamed spinach of all things. Guess it speaks to just how amazing some of the basic ingredients are in Italy. They did have a quaint outdoor area but it was November and too chilly for us. You can see pics of outdoor area on trip advisor, however that is not how I found this place. Just used that site to see pics.
There is a place in Florence on Via Macci, across from Cibreo. The sign just says Slumeria. But walk in and there is a buffet of simple food--farro salad, bread salad, little sandwiches, a few pasta dishes and more. For 4 euro you get a larege glass of "rosso o bianco" and the buffet. Albeit--paper plates and plastic forks. Talk about non touristy! and cheap.
