Rita's on the Riverwalk
Native Californian here, in San Antonio for a quick visit. Our son just graduated from Air Force Basic Military Training, and on the recommendation of some his flight mates, we hit Rita's. It just goes to show you, though, that you should consider the sources of those recommendations (most of his flight mates are from areas not known for Mexican food). We had a three item combination of two chicken tacos and one chicken enchilada, and also an order of chicken fajitas, a supposed specialty of the house. The complimentary chips were on the stale side, but the salsa was tasty. The combination arrived first, and was pretty damn ordinary, even downright bland. The chicken was moist but lacked seasoning, the shells looked as if they may have come from a box, and the beans had less flavor than some brands of canned frijoles. About ten minutes later, the fajitas came out, and the suffered from many of the same shortcomings. Bland chicken paired with veggies that seemed more steamed than grilled made for a disappointing meal.
I've had worse Mexican food, but not by much.

Thanks - we are quite proud. I don't know what possessed us to try Rita's. I know there are regional variations both in Mexico and the States (eg Tex Mex/Cal Mex/New Mex), but this was just plain bad. At least it was an improvement over the dining hall chow our son has had for the past 8 weeks!
