Where can I find reasonably priced smoked whitefish?

nycguy20011 May 10, 2014 03:26 PM

Where can I buy smoked whitefish that's reasonably priced (less than $20 total)?

I tried The Lobster Place but A) They wouldn't de-bone it and B) Their cheapest one was $21. Does that sound expensive?

It's expensive stuff - anything good will probably be over that price for a pound. Russ & Daughter's, Sable's, Barney Greengrass all have it. I think many Whole Foods have it too, probably a bit less expensive than the ones I mention above.

You could always go to Acme on a Friday...

Or - why not substitute some smoked trout?

Costco sells smoked white fish from acme at really good price....see if you can ask someone who lives in suburb to buy you one or visit with them.

There's a Costco in Manhattan, too.

The whole whitefish from the Manhattan Costco are great -- reasonably priced and plump with lots of fish. Among the best quality I've had anywhere.

i know this is the manhattan board but for folks who may read across this and the outer boroughs board the brooklyn costco carries the same whole whitefish and i concur with city kid, its reasonable and very good.

Just came back from Whole Foods and they're selling a chunk of smoked whitefish for $11.99 per lb unlike Lobster Place which is 13.99 per lb.

In Lobster place I was required to purchase the whole fish which would've been too big and too costly. Whole Foods in the winner so far unless I find a better option.

Good price. If Fairway has it, it will likely be the same product at about the same price.

Fairway is $16.99/lb. Not as good as Zabar's, but good enough for considerably less.

Ooops. Sorry. Typo. Fairway smoked whitefish is $15.99/lb.

Zabar's smoked whitefish is $41.98 for a 1 1/2 lb half fish, $75 for the whole fish.

Sorry I don't know of a reasonable place in Manhattan but have you considered going to a Russian market in Brooklyn or Queens? Also I believe Acme (in Greenpoint) sells it during their Fish Fridays in the AM.

Check Nordic Preserves at Essex Market as well.

Do you like their stuff (Nordic Preserves)? Their fish always looks so sad to me.

I find that most dead fish anywhere look kind of sad.

(But yeah, I like pretty much everything I've had there)

Check out Bagel Boss - First Ave and 15th/16th St.

FYI - Their chunky whitefish salad is the best!
