We liked the menu of this city centre bar and restaurant. Good because the menu is short, so the kitchen can concentrate on doing things well. Good because there’s no stinting on big, bold flavours.

There’s only four or five starters. The veggie one involved grilled aubergine slices, rolled and stuffed with a very lemony couscous. A drizzle of sweetish balsamic dressing softened the sharpness. The other starter just screamed “Order Me! Eat Me!” – a small slice of pork belly, crumbled black pudding, a quail Scotch egg and a dollop of mustardy celeriac remoulade. Not stuff I’d have instinctively put on the same plate but it did work so well.

And there was no way I was going to ignore “pie of the week” – in this case, steak and mushroom. Lovely crisp shortcrust pastry, tasty contents, proper non-sloppy mashed potato, carrots & green beans. Tasted just as good as I hoped it would.

There was simple food going on across the table. Hangar steak comes medium rare (although it was definitely on the rare side) and was bang-on for flavour. Classic accompaniments of roasted tomato, grilled mushroom and watercress. And chips that looked and tasted as though they had actually been cut in the kitchen, rather than a bag of frozen opened.

If I had a minor criticism, service may have been a tad on the slow side but we’d no other plans for the evening, so it was no problem. Well worth a try if in the area.

Oh, yes, this “rectifying” business in the name of the place. Don’t ask me about the technicalities but it’s apparently part of the alcohol distillation process and the building used to rectify gin, which was produced at a distillery on the other side of the river. The restaurant bar now keeps an extensive gin selection.
