Austin Restaurant Week

I know this isn't the greatest deal but it can sometimes be nice to try new places. I was considering trying No VA. Can't get a handle on the place. The bad reviews are enthusiastically bad.

  1. looking for some suggestions for places to try. Have any of y'all had a great ARW meal yet?

    1. We went to Cru last night... Had a beet salad, braised short rib on polenta, and fondue for dessert ($27). It was all very good, especially for the rainy evening!

      1. Went to crave tonight. The tequila punch was very nice. the size of the apps were good and my coconut cake was tasty.

        didn't care for the food too much. the artichoke/crab dip was good but the "tandoori bread" was pita bread. I was expecting something like naan. the seared tuna was good but the sauce was too sweet.

        the steak and salmon were both mediocre. I probably won't be going back...

        1. We went to Tadashi tonight and I was not impressed.

          First of all, the portions were miniscule. The entree was a 3 oz portion of sea bass. The normal portion is 6-7 oz and costs $24, so I'm baffled as to why, when we were paying $37, we got half as much. I tried the "ceviche" app (also half the normal size, normally costs $12) and it wasn't ceviche at all - basically a very small amount of raw fish on top of a salad (total fish portion size was about the size of a normal sashimi slice), and not a very good one. The no-bake green tea "cheesecake" was moderately tasty, but basically amounted to a bit of cream cheese whipped with matcha tea and topped with whipped cream.

          I've become increasingly disillusioned with Restaurant Week. The whole point was to give restaurants business on the less-busy nights and, in exchange, give the diner a bit of a deal. Seems like most of the time, if I calculate out what the normal cost of my meal would have been if it hadn't been Restaurant Week, it would have cost the same or less than I paid. Annoying.

            Optimista, I share your pain like Clinton would. I gave up on restaurant week long ago. It's more of a foodie thing anyhow.

              Well it's become a way for restaurants to take advantage. They cut protons and don't serve their best dishes. Used to be a promotional tool but no more

                i wouldn't mind if they cut portions but they should really put out some great food. Its a way for me to try places that aren't on my normal restaurant rotation and hopefully find some new places to add to that rotation...

                  Optimista - No, I'm still a chowhound.....sticking to Jim's original manifesto:

                          Well, Chowhound Is The New Forty doesn't quite have the same ring to it, so I guess I'll stick with the original plan. :)
