Hi,
I just came back from a weekend in Montreal, but had a hard time figuring out where the cozy, funky, intimate, local haunts are. On my last night an artist suggested I check out Casa Del Popolo, which is RIGHT UP MY ALLEY!
Any suggestions for other places where I could get coffee or dinner, that have a nice, warm and friendly feel like that? I like the type of places that you hear by word of mouth. I plan to go back soon and would like to have some cool suggestions in my arsenal!
By the way, I had a great beer there: rousse or something...

Best,

You could try Else's, on Roy between St-Laurent and St-Denis. It's more a cafe/bar than a restaurant, but they do serve basic foods (chili, soups, etc...). It would definitely be your type of place.
A 'rousse' beer just means 'red'. If it was a micro-brewsky, it might have been a Boreale rousse (on tap it's my personal favorite), or maybe a Belle Gueule rousse.

Other recommendations: La Paryse, on Ontario just west of St-Denis: probably the best hamburgers in Montreal (if not the universe), small friendly place but can get hugely busy.
Le Bazou: higher end restaurant (entrees from 15-20 $can.), serves eclectic/fusion type fare, in a funky decor where you can see the chef working. 1310 de Maisonneuve E. (quite close to La Paryse). It's also very small, reservations in order on weekends. There's another, larger Bazou with the same menu further east on De Maisonneuve, in the gay village. Same food, atmosphere more chic and cold, waiters cuter.

hey JNR,

you might try: Pharmacie Esperanza at 5490 St-Laurent (at the corner of St-Viateur). Good cheap food in a really eclectic atmosphere. Lots of organic stuff & great prices.

the beer you had was probably Boreal Rousse- it's a local brew and I agree, quite yummy.

cheers!

I recommend Else's also (on Roy between St-Laurent and St-Denis) - nice relaxing place to throw a few back.

Across from Casa del Popolo is Salla Rosa which you'd probably also like - depending on what band is playing that night.

Blizzarts (3956-A St-Laurent Blvd) is fun especially on wednesdays when they eschew they're regular funky/techno DJing for a more reggae/island music feeling.

Bily Kun (354 Mont Royal E.) is a fun little place and worth a trip for the sightly unsettling decor. You'll now what i mean if you drop by.
