Best Fish & Chips in Oxford

I'm in Oxford, England for business and want to have an authentic fish & chips experience. Any recommendations?

Any other recommendations for Oxford are welcome, too!

  1. I'm sorry not to be able to help you with fish and chips, but The Magdalen Arms is an excellent gastropub. Have you tried the search engine at the top of the page? There are lots of suggestions for Oxford, including the popular Cherwell Boathouse.

Thank you! I have read the strings about Oxford but didn't find any mention of where to get fish & chips. Multiple people have referred me to The Magdalen Arms so I'll be sure to check it out.

Admittedly this information is 20 years old...but when I was a student there the best by far was Carfax Chippie, tucked away at the crossroads at the Christ Church end of the High St. It was something of an institution so I imagine it's still going!

    2. The best advice, always IMO, about fish & chips is to ask a local.

And, even then, you'll probably be disappointed by greasy fish kept warm in the steamer, so the batter goes soggy. And undercooked chips, artificially whitened.

In spite of it being one of our iconic national dishes, it's so rare to find it done well.
