Huh! LOL Sorry about that, JAB - I didn't see it show up when I peeked occasionally at the FM&N board, and since no one commented on your thread, it didn't stay high enough up on the feed.

I guess this means I have to do the recaps again for CH. :-P

      1. re: LindaWhit

        Yes You Do.

No good deed goes unpunished ;-)

        1. re: LindaWhit

Just recaps? By now Linda it might be expected that you will find a way to attend the filming and post firsthand accounts.

          1. re: viperlush

Believe me, I would *LOVE* to do that, viperlush. :D But I'm afraid I'm not as "camera ready" as the TC producers would want me to be.

            1. re: LindaWhit

You should totally be there. Totally.

              1. re: LindaWhit

yeah, or at least get screeners like many critics and reviewers!

                1. re: trolley

I think you've more than earned a spot at a Restaurant Wars table. Talk about free PR for the show!

                  1. re: bear

Awww, thanks. But I'm not even a blip on their radar.

                    1. re: LindaWhit

You really have to find a way to get into at least one of the events. Imagine what a blast it would be to read your recap AND behind-the-scenes details.

                      1. re: LindaWhit

Maybe we can start a Twitter campaign to get Linda on one of the Shows. Tom's good natured. I'm sure if enough of us gently suggest...

I don't really even know how to start such a thing.

TBNT. I ain't pretty enough for them. I'll continue to watch from afar. :-)

          2. thanks for posting this Linda!

            1. My predicictions:

Boston will be called Beantown, bad Boston accent impressions, famous local Athlete (Ortiz, Brady, Chara, Rondo?) as a judge, misidentified Brookline or Cambridge as neighorhoods of Boston, clams, lobster bake on a Harbor Island ( Jasper White?), Julia Child references or challenge, and a Sam Adams or Harpoon sponsored quick fire.

And I wonder if they will try to tie in the 4th on the Esplanade or Earth Fest (or would security still be an issue?). And I would love if they did an event at the MFA, the green icicle would look awesome on TV. Maybe get ingredients donated from the Victory Gardens in the Fens?

              1. re: viperlush

I'd be awfully disappointed without a tea party reenactment.

                1. re: JAB

And how can I forget a possible DD's sponsored quick fire.

                2. re: viperlush

It's usually a bit over 30 days for the shoot (IIRC), so if Production is in the Spring, the Independence Day Esplanade tie-in won't work.

But I suspect there will be something at Fenway, something with Tiffani Faison from TC1 and TC10 winner Kristin Kish (she's no longer at Menton, but I think she might still be in the area), definitely something at the Cape or in Gloucester, probably something at Harvard or MIT?

Looks like Fenway Park and Plimouth Plantation are possible locations.

A MIT and MoS science themed challenge would be interesting. The MoS is a great location and can get some great river/Boston shots from the Cambridge side of the river. A couple years ago the BF and I went to a Valentines Day event at the MIT museum. They paired up a researcher to each of the deadly sins. They then gave a short (15min) lecture about their research and offered a snack that matched their sin or theme. Gluttony was a donut, wrath hot wings, lust chocolate fondue, etc.

                    1. re: viperlush

Yeah, Plimouth Plantation could be left off the list, IMO. Go out to PTown or Chatham or Brewster.

                      1. re: viperlush

That sounds like it'd be right down Richard Blais' avenue!

                    2. re: viperlush

Don't forget a "Boston Strong" reference somewhere...

                      1. re: mwk

No no no no no no no!!!! I specifically posted on TC's Facebook page asking that they avoid that particular phrase. Not that they'll listen to me, but....

                        1. re: LindaWhit

I'm guessing there won't be a pressure cooker challenge.

                          1. re: Firegoat

                            Too soon?

                            1. re: JAB

                              oh geez ;)

                      2. re: viperlush

an event at the Isabella would be classier even than the MFA...

I'm sure they'll do something at Fenway Park.
And probably a creative remake of chowdah!

                      3. Some snarky ideas for challenges in The Hub. ;-)

                            They missed the Chappaquiddick clambake.

As an MIT alumna, they are totally missing the obvious: there needs to be a salt-related challenge in honor of the annual sodium drop!

                            2. I heard they were going to be housed in South Boston... that should be interesting...

                                  GMTA, viperlush. :-)

                                2. re: cwdonald

South Boston as in Southie? Or the South End? For those unaware:

Southie = South Boston... a traditionally blue-collar residential neighborhood, although it is changing, but what some think of when they hear the "Bawstin" accent. (Good Will Hunting, L Street Tavern, Whitey Bulger)

South End = Back Bay - distinctly different with a more "trendy" feel, and upscale restaurants, galleries, and cafes.

                                  1. re: cwdonald

more than interesting if there are any minorities in the cast... Southie is NOT a friendly place, gentrification notwithstanding.

                                    1. re: ChefJune

                                      I disagree.

June, if I recall correctly you live in New Jersey.

I live in Dot and I'm in Southie at least 3 times a week.

Southie is a friendly place. It's tremendously different then 10 years ago.

And I've have heard that the cheftestants will be put up I Southie ( God knows there's enough new housing ) but my source is unreliable .

                                      1. re: C. Hamster

Thank you for telling me that, C. Hamster.

I lived in Boston for 11 years. Southie was always a "friendly" place. If you're white. Maybe that's changed some, but not according to friends I know who still live in Boston.

                                        1. re: ChefJune

Perhaps it is your friends' perceptions that haven't changed because the demographic of southie has certainly changed a bit

                                  2. No idea if Jason Santos applied, but would love to see him on it from Boston. He's one of the HK chefs that seems to have taken their exposure and thrown in a big chunk of hard work and gotten somewhere.

Agreed that he's done well for himself, but I'd just as soon there be no cross-pollination between HK and TC. :-)

Has anyone from HK ever been on TC?

                                      1. re: LindaWhit

I cant recall any HK/TC crossovers but there are a lot of former HK/TC cheftestants on those new weird FN shows (Cutthroat, Casino, etc)

                                        1. re: C. Hamster

I don't think the HK contestants are in the same league as TC contestants (of course I've only seen one season of HK which was enough).

But the winner of the season that I did watch, later appeared on The Food Truck Race on FN.

                                    2. Boston is an excellent venue: rich in history, famous for education and a culinary destination in its own right.

If I were scouting locations, I'd take hard looks at Old Ironsides, Old North Church, both MIT and Harvard, Fenway Park, the Charles River and Boston Common to name a few. I wouldn't shy from the dark side so Whitey Bulger would have to be woven into an episode. I would avoid Faneuil Hall at all costs.

                                      just my two cents...

Be ready for mindless stereotypes. At first I was pissed that my town of Houston was excluded from Top Chef Texas. After the train wreck Texas episodes I'm glad we weren't a part. I had to stop watching it, and I loved Top Chef. Louisiana episodes have given me hope for the future.

                                          1. re: James Cristinian

I've worked in Dallas and Houston. Louisiana, too. I like that part of the country.

It will be interesting to see if Whitey Bulger gets mentioned in an episode.

                                            1. re: steve h.

Thanks, we get a lot of cheap shots for being in Texas. Let's hope it doesn't end anything like "The Departed."

                                            2. re: James Cristinian

"Mindless stereotypes" - which is why I hated that TC called it "Beantown" in their announcement.

NO ONE HERE calls it Beantown. And I'm not originally *from* Boston. But having lived here for 25 five years EXACTLY (today was the day I started my new job when I moved to MA), I'm entitled to say DO NOT CALL IT BEANTOWN.

I'm hoping Jasper White gets some face time on the new series. He's a Jersey boy.

                                                  Beantown?

Only inept writers call Boston beantown.

But whatever... the rest of the country hates Boston for one reason or another. Endless list ...Kennedys...Romney...Celtics...Sowx...Pats. Whatever.

Julia Child/WGBH may be the only universal positive.

                                                2. re: James Cristinian

If it was good enough for Anthony Bourdain to create an entire Boston-based episode of "No Reservations", using every mindless stereotype of Boston, why not Top Chef?

                                                  1. re: mwk

But Bourdain was trying to tie the episode to the Boston based film The Friends Of Eddie Coyle. He was never going to do a regular "lets eat at various places in Boston" shtick. The Beantown thing is infuriating, though. I'm sure they'll be a bean challenge, cause ya know, it's Beantown.

                                              2. I hope they make a day trip up here to Portland. Of course there's bound to be at least one chef who has never cooked with lobster or has never made a chowder. Sorry, I meant lobsta and chowda.

                                                  2. Read that Fabiano was at the Harvard Sq. Mayfair on Sun., I came too late unfortunately. I did see Stephanie Cmar set up with her mini donuts and homemade pop tarts but wasn't ready for dessert yet. She was very sweet with two little boys getting their donut sticks.

Linda, if you have any ideas on how to get in on a Top Chef event in Boston, let me know. I have a couple connections I could try to work/beg but just as a friend and I thought the Real World might listen to our radio shows, I doubt this will happen either. Thx.

For some reason, I expect they'll end up on a duck boat for a challenge. Other "boat" possibilities would probably include something at the USS Constitution - if not on the ship, then inside the gates - it's a good location for them to use logistically. And maybe pulling traps on a lobster boat at some point.

Looks like there are "surprise" events, as noted in the Padma/Kristen article (probably so they're not inundated with fans):

"And on Sunday, locals tweeted that they were at a food fest thrown by the Bravo series. “I thought I was going to a food festival but nope I guess I’ll be on bravo’s Top Chef,” tweeted @MISSVLLISON. "

Im still predicting Copley Farmer's market because I know KK is buds with Chris Kurth and the Siena Farms folks which also creates an Anna Sortun (TCMasters) connection.

And there's this siting of Padma noted on the Boston board:

Well, I had to go through Belmont Center today about 1/2 block from Il Casale and there was definitely something going on. There were black tents on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant and adjacent stores as well as a couple of rental trucks parked out front. It was hard not to stop and try and peak in!

                                                              2. Hugh is here, too!

                                                                From Eater:

"Now that Top Chef has landed in Boston and filming has reportedly begun, sightings are rolling in. Tipsters saw Top Chef judge Hugh Acheson around town yesterday — at one point, he was at Flour Bakery + Cafe in Back Bay, where he said he had just arrived in town and was waiting to get picked up for a shoot. "He was very nice!!" adds the tipster, and he posed for a photo with her and her young son.

At 7:45 p.m., by his own account, Acheson was "hanging at [the] bar" at Toro.

Then, he was spotted at The Wine Emporium in the South End around 9 p.m. yesterday, where he bought a half pint of Knob Creek whiskey, according to a tipster. He reportedly said that the Top Chef team was "very happy to be in Boston" and has already been filming for about three days. He was "really friendly and nice," according to the tipster."

                                                                1. I know what I'm doing on Tuesday!

Another tipster is "99% sure" they were shooting in an apartment building at 1330 Boylston Street near Fenway earlier this week, possibly in Dustin Pedroia's old apartment. Thanks Kewpie for trying to put in a good word for me and Linda when you went to the filming. I'm just hoping Hugh gets in touch when he comes back to town but we'll see. He'll probably be free when I go on vacation (Detroit Rock City here I come). (And congrats on early retirement. I'll be on that bottle and can retirement plan.)

C'mon. This part is pitifully easy. Boston baked beans. Now, if you wanna know why baked beans were big in Boston, it gets a little more interesting.

One answer might be "mercantilism." For those of you who slept through history in high school, this was a colonial economic policy that, among other things, discouraged foreign trade, unless it brought a favorable balance of payments for the mother country, and also discouraged colonial manufacturing of finished goods. What has this to do with baked beans, you ask? They're sweetened. The sweetener used is molasses, a product of the (British) West Indies. Relax, this will all come clear anon.

Another part of the answer is the Coriolis Effect. What's that, you slept through physics, too? Big systems on a spinning sphere, like prevailing winds, tend to form clockwise patterns in the northern half of the sphere, counterclockwise ones in the southern half. In the Northern Atlantic, not only do the winds follow this pattern, but so does the major ocean current, the Gulf Stream. That was another reason to use molasses--it was easy to ship stuff up from the Caribbean; hard to ship stuff down there, or to import directly from Europe.

The next factor was, oddly enough, slavery. You had your ship sailing from New England full of farm products. The easiest place to sail it was England; that's the way the current carried you and the winds blew. Getting back was a different story. So, ships would make their next port of call somewhere they could easily sail to where they could sell finished goods--let's say the Gold Coast in Africa. The next cargo would be slaves, who were taken to the Caribbean to raise sugar cane. Then rum or molasses were loaded for New or old England. This "triangular trade" (although it was as often actually square, with four ports of call) again made molasses the natural choice, since it fit in so well with mercantilism.

So, the exigencies of colonial trade meant Boston had an abundance of inexpensive molasses, which local entrepreneurs soon put to good use. Why beans? Same reason armies used to like them. Cheap, storable, and very easy to cook.

AND they probably require FB and Twitter accounts to monitor after the filming to ensure that nothing gets revealed prior to air date. Just because someone signs a release doesn't mean they won't let the cat out of the bag.

The director will go thru and choose a dozen people to feature as extras. The rest will remain background. When you sign a legal release form, you sign it. Ummm, you asked a question responding to a post of mine, so I responded with how I'm aware how some of these shows work. I never said this is WHAT they are doing - I said I believe this is what they're doing. So yes, it's my opinion. No reason to get antagonistic with me.

As for not knowing what I said - it's pretty black and white. I believe they want good looking people in the seats. Simple as that.

And why pay for central casting extras when they don't have to? If you don't want to jump through hoops, don't. Based on responses I've seen on Facebook, I'm pretty sure there are enough others who would be eager to be in whatever seats are available.

And I'd suspect that THAT is why they ask for FB and Twitter accounts - so they can see what you look like, AND ensure that details won't be revealed prior to the airing of the episode.

                                                                                                                2. re: LindaWhit

Just checked their website. (Hate the website, BTW - like HATE the website.)

They certain aren't cheap, are they? I'll have to check the Boston board for comments.

ETA: OK, just read the comments. C. Hamster, hotoynoodle, and MC Slim JB reviews tell all.

So perhaps Hugh went because he knows the chef?

                                                                                                                                      That's my guess.

I only went the first few times because it was close to work and after that only when forced at knife-point.
