Mom wants matzo ball soup

She loves matzo ball soup but only makes it to nyc once a year or so. When I searched the board all the threads are a few years old- does anyone still even order matzo ball soup??

Here's the catch: no dill (non-negotiable), and minimal vegetables (or whatever, she picks them out of everything else already).

We went to 2nd ave deli (she loved theirs) and katz already- and if either are really The Best we can return.

I saw someone on an old thread recommend mendy's, mile end, or ben's in the garment district- can anyone vouch for these?

Neighborhood doesn't matter much since we will be cris-crossing the city for a few days.

Sarge's could be perfect since we've never been there- and dad can get his meaty sandwich fix! Favorite sandwich there? And, have you had the chopped liver at sarge's? Mom likes that too...

My favorite sandwich at Sarge's is the pastrami sandwich. I always order it "fatty". The pastrami is sliced thin which I prefer.

I adore the chopped liver at Sarge's too: filled with chopped egg and sautéed onions.

Sarge's also makes the best sweet noodle kugel.

Just realized I described my perfect meal at Sarge's. I hope you and your family enjoy it as much as my family and I do!

Sounds like we have a winner!
And since i'm veg i'll just have sweet noodle kugel as my dinner! ;)

Sarge's just reopened after a fire and the food's just as good. I had a rolled beef, tongue and chopped liver triple decker, but my fave is the corned beef and pastrami. The burgers and the lox, eggs & onions are good too.

        2. Less than 48 hours ago we were in 2nd Ave Deli eating Matzoh ball soup and I can't imagine any better (I have never been a fan up until two days ago but am now a convert).

That's funny because I'm pretty much in the same boat. I never even entertained the idea of matzoh ball soup until 2 weeks ago (special on the Jeffrey's Grocercy menu) and now I am seeking out the real deal stuff because I'm hooked.

            2nd Ave Deli

            1. Barney Greengrass on UWS.
Great bagels and smoked fish too.

              1. We love the brisket sandwich at Sarge's best. Order it with a side of potato salad.

                1. Your question reminded me of a conversation I had many years ago with some friends who were all raised in NYC.

The question was, where do you get the best chicken soup in NYC? One person said 2nd Avenue Deli, another said Sarges.

Then Harry said, rather quietly, "My mother makes the best chicken soup in New York. But it's too expensive."
