Romantic Restaurant Close to The Plaza Hotel

Looking for a romantic restaurant close to The Plaza Hotel in Midtown

Type of Food:
Italian, Japanese, steak, seafood

We want a romantic restaurant with a romantic feel and .... Not too loud, tables not too close together, candlelight, you get the idea.

Budget ... Hmmmm.... Somewhere around $150-200 per person.

Thank you

  1. Rouge Tomate, Marea, or Nougatine.

Jean George would work but Nougatine, IMO, isn't romantic at all

Vitae is fine, ipse, but 13 blocks away from the Plaza -not close, as the OP asked for.

I guess it's just a failing of mine.

I have no problems walking from, say, Bryant Park or even Union Sq to CPS or even the Met.

            1. re: ipsedixit

... and you do that in the heels you'd wear to a romantic dinner?

              +1 for La Grenouille.

              1. re: Phil Ogelos

Well, if I was in heels I wouldn't walk further than the entrance of the hotel before asking the doorman to hail a cab.

        2. If you don't mind the walk, how about Le Grenouille. It fits your needs though it's classic French.

          Does Betony get loud?

The din at Betony during lunch can be quite lively. It's an enjoyable vibe for a business lunch. The upstairs area might be nice for a romantic dinner, however.

            1. re: ipsedixit

The downstairs back area at Betony is lovely at dinner too. The OP would need to request to be seated not near the bar area which is very "lively".

              1. re: ellenost

Downstairs back area of Betony is exactly what I was thinking.

            2. re: Monica

I love La Grenouille and would choose it in a heartbeat, but the tables are pretty closely spaced and that might be a negative for the OP. Ah, just saw he ended up at Rouge Tomate. Not my favorite but glad it was a hit.

            3. The dining room at The Modern, a two top along the window looking out on to the sculpture garden.

              1. Thank you all but I have called to all of the restaurants you've suggested to make reservations for tomorrow at 7pm obviously they are all booked. I should of mentioned that on my post ,my bad sorry

Can you please suggest other options?

The Modern Dining Room is showing a 6:30 and then an 8:00. Would 6:30 be too early? It's just a 30 min difference.

                  1. re: theitgirl

It may be too far for you to walk in heels but you could do Picholine. Just had a fantastic dinner Sunday evening.

                    1. re: Spiritchaser

Glad to hear about Picholine. Need to schedule another dinner there soon (probably will need to wait until June since my "dance card" is booked for the next month with: Jungsik, Louro, Ko, Ma Peche, The NoMad,and my Momofuku Toronto vacation).

                    2. re: theitgirl

As Spiritchaser said, Picholine is underrated and looks like they have 7 o'clock table. I'd book a table there if I were you.

                    3. Also not right by the Plaza but not a bad cab ride away is Tocqueville. They have a 7PM as well.

                        1. re: PHREDDY

We ended up gping to Rouge Tomato it was very nice and interesting we did the wine pairing. I must say I was very impressed. The decor, the service and the food was incredible.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will repeat.
