Rameniac was my ramen guru when I lived in L.A., and his website (while not having been updated in about 3 years) has proved invaluable to me in learning the various styles of ramen throughout Japan. He became a bit of a mini-celebrity when he was featured in the L.A. Times. He hasn't posted here since December 2010. Now that it appears that I'll be living in Japan (possibly permanently if I like it there and can stay employed), I wonder if he can be found online anywhere so I can further consult him about his ramen knowledge after I make the move.
Hey! Yes I'm in semi-retirement. Been needing to redesign the site, and have been living and traveling abroad half the time and cutting back on the carbs so ramen isn't on my brain quite as much these days, but whenever I go to Japan I still manage to gorge a few dozen bowls or so. Feel free to drop me an email at the address listed on the sidenav of my site or add me to gchat. I'll point you in the right direction when you go to Japan!
Good to know you're still around.
Since you're spending time in Japan, I wonder if you ever tried the outrageously rich fried chicken ramen at Karako in Kyoto? I'd love to know if it's still there. From my 2007 report:
KARAKO on the NW corner of Nijo-Dori and Higashioji-Dori in Okazaka-Tokusei-cho (closest subway stop is Higashiyama)... go west on Sanjo Dori and then right on Higashioji-Dori until you cross Nijo-Dori and look for the red lantern on the left side.
