Inexpensive and good sushi in NYC

I'll be in NYC in mid-May. I would like to have some good sushi and sashimi but not at the top tier level like 15 East or Yasuda. I have already booked 15 East for one night but would like to try and place that's a bit lower level to compare. I am from Toronto and sushi here isn't great. Thanks!

  1. Ushiwaka Maru.

We also like Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya, on Orchard Street. Good cocktails, too.

Thanks! I will look into these two place. I am trying to eat as much sushi and sashimi as I can on this trip since Toronto is expensive and a disappointment.

I like those two a lot as well but they're night and day in terms of atmosphere. The latter is a lot more hip/boisterous/dark.

I agree, except mid-week; Mon - Wed I find Blue Ribbon to be pretty mellow.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies!

    2. How much are you willing to spend per person before tax, tip, alcohol? Are you interested in an omakase style meal or do you plan to order a set meal plus some a la carte items? Are you looking mostly for traditional nigiri? Or more creative stuff?

I think at the 2 suggestions above, you can do either?

I was curious if they were sitting at the bar having omakase at 15 East and wanting a similar but cheaper experience elsewhere.

Hi Kathryn, I guess I should have the omakase at 15 East. I am sitting at the bar. I would like to try a second tier Jap restaurant, so maybe something for $80 per person tip included. I love sashimi, and want to eat more fish than rice so no nigiri for me. I won't be drinking alcohol and will stick to tea.
