Dinner at Anise

Had dinner at Anise last night. We heard about this restaurant from this board. Strengths: in our opinion, the presentation of the food was fun, ecletic, and picture perfect. They presented the food on many sizes and shapes of plates and bowls. Service, in our opinion, was fantastic. Our waiter was very attentive and our courses were served one after another with proper timing in between. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. Weaknesses: the wine menu was very expensive (the cheapest bottle offered $48.00) and the mark-up on many bottles was over 300%. The wines offered along with the tasting menu again were not special for the $45.00 and $50.00 extra you are charged. While we enjoyed the food, we felt it was also over-priced. While I really appreciate presentation of food, service and atmosphere, I go to a restaurant for the food and the food here didn't WOW us. My six course tasting menu was $65.00 and my husband's nine course tasting menu was $90.00. For that money, I think you should come away feeling the food was pretty special.
We have many more restaurants to try in Montreal thanks to the suggestions on this board. Cheers!

  1. just wanted to post a quick response. we were at anise on saturady, and while i agree with your comments on the wine, my wife would say otherwise. she had the surf 9 course tasting menu and swears it was the best coupling of wine/food she has ever had. i had the turf 9 course tasting menu, and while some of the food didn't leave me speechless, there was this lamb dish, wrapped in phylo pastry served with a sweet curry sauce that was so good i wanted to weep when they took my plate away.
also, as you said, the service was unbelievable.
keep us posted on your next excursion in montreal!!
