French Spices

Is there anywhere in the Bay area, preferably downtown though Berkeley would be ok too, where I could possibly buy spices from a company called Terre Exotique? I've bought them in France and St Martin. They have a website but the shipping charges are killer and they only list distributors in France and St Martin.

  1. I've never seen that label. Given the prices (e.g. $7 an ounce for coriander), it would be a hard sell.

I wouldn't buy coriander either but their mixes are extraordinary, just maybe not extraordinary enough for the shipping costs...

Have you tried the blends from Oaktown Spice Shop?

Personally I haven't found any commercial blends that can compare with homemade blends of freshly ground spices.

I'm from western Canada. I'll be in your area next week and thought I might get lucky.

I haven't been able to match the Gingerbread mix and I certainly have tried.

Did you use Ceylon cinnamon aka Cinnamomum verum? Much of what's commonly called cinnamon is actually cassia

The quality of dried ginger also varies wildly. The best flavor comes from grinding your own fresh from chunks. Penzey's ground ginger is superior to other brands I've tried.

It isn't the cinnamon, I have a variety of types, real and cassia. The biggest problem is the anise. Getting it fine enough and the right balance.
