Tacolandia 2014 6/28 3-7pm

  • n

Just got my tickets ^_^

Tacolandia will take place this year on Saturday, June 28 from 3-7 p.m. at El Pueblo de Los Angeles in downtown L.A. General admission, which includes entry into the event, entertainment, access to the vendor village and the cash bar as well as tacos from the many vendors, is $25. Premium tickets ($45) include all that plus a VIP gift bag and 5 drink tickets. You can also buy a $20 tequila garden ticket, which doesn't include event admission, which gets you into said garden and 10 1/2-oz. tequila shots.

    1. re: kevin

I sprung for the VIP. $20 for 5 drinks + a grab bag sounds reasonable, although an extra half hour before the riff raff comes in would be nice ^_^

        1. re: chrishei

I know you're kidding, but last year was a veritable bargain. I think I drank $20's worth of Jarritos alone.

          1. re: TheOffalo

I think we each ate at least 3x worth of food.

            1. re: chrishei

Who will play the role of older daughter this time?

                1. re: TheOffalo

who said i'm even attending ????????

you know i'm usually against and anti-these food tests.

                  1. re: kevin

This one was really good last year.

                2. re: ns1

We should all meet up there. Kevin will be playing the part of the older daughter. I will reprise the younger daughter role.

                  1. re: chrishei

I'll be super easy to spot - look for the asian guy eating tacos.

              1. re: TheOffalo

i'd be swimming with the fishes if i drink 20 bucks worth of fucking jarritos.

                1. re: TheOffalo

love to make shooters with tequila and mango or pineapple jarriotos.

            2. Got mine. Can't for the life of me figure out how I skipped this last year

              1. Last year's thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/906589

I think I will go if I can, but I'm a little sad that it's 21+. My 7 y.o. enjoyed herself last year.

                1. Buying my tickets today. What do y'all think is in the VIP bag aside from the drink tickets? Not a big drinker but maybe I'll get the VIP and sell the drink tickets.

I dunno but $20 for 5 drinks and a grab bag seemed pretty reasonable to me.

                  2. They've been updating the list of participating restaurants on the website. At first there were just a half dozen listed, but now there's... a lot more!

Sounds like a great lineup. Is this an annoying clusterfuck situation like some of the other fairs? Id love to check out some of those spots only read about here but I need an atmosphere conducive to fun and eating not something akin to lax.

                        1. re: jessejames

I haven't gone to many of these food events, but I thought last year's inaugural event was really well run. It was crowded, certain stands had long lines, and some places ran out of food early, but others had plenty, and food could be had during the whole time.

Since most of the vendors this year were there last year, the ones that didn't have enough food will hopefully bring enough.

                          1. re: TheOffalo

This one has the food I want to try most too. Maybe tacos ez and fast to serve? I'm going to try to go. Thanks for the encouragement.

                        2. re: TheOffalo

In all seriousness...how are you supposed to eat this many tacos?...

It just seems kind of ridiculous to me.

                          1. Tickets were bought as soon as I got the email. Cannot wait - thought last year's was great! See you guys there!

If you are late, that means there probably won't be any eats left for you.

At least I have 10 drink tickets to ease the pain.

i can save you a couple tacos, in return for 2 drink tickets.

Should we try to specify a time and a stand to meet at, fellow hounds?

                                  2. re: ns1

I'll save you some tacos for a drink coupon :-)

I want to hit at least 10 spots, but I'm not sure I'll be able to even eat more than 8 tacos.

                                    1. re: FoodShutterbug

We should set a time and place for the 'hounds to meet. We tried to do that last year but failed.

                                  3. Both freaking years, I'm out of town during the event. You people better put up good reports and pics so I can curse you and my bad timing.

Shit...this might be the only reason to go. Avoiding going to Tiajuana to taste La Guerrerense's tacos might be worth the price of admission alone I guess.

                                      2. I am torn between my desire to stuff my pie hole with so many great taco offerings in one place vs. my fear and loathing of crowded food fests / faires.

To anyone who went last year: did you notice if there were any quiet out-of-the-way corners where a misanthrope could escape momentarily with her plate of food, or is it wall-to-wall humanity throughout and you have to eat crowded all together, cheek-to-jowl with your fellow man? (Pass the Xanax, por favor.)

P.S. Just checked ticket prices plus service charge online, and they are now $34.25 all-in for the basic admission.

It was somewhere in between. Like disneyland on a slow day - meaning I never had a problem finding a place to sit down, but privacy there was not.

Different venue this year though so who knows.

Spoon - last year, you could find corners where there were no people, definitely, but they would be behind the booths, next to the fence. This year it is taking place at El Pueblo de Los Angeles, so I have no idea if privacy can be found.

                                            1. re: WildSwede

...behind the booths, next to the fence...I could roll with that.

I hope you will report back from this year's venue? Curious to hear how the experience contrasts with last year's (and if the new venue has more room for the crowd to spread out).

                                              Bon appetit!

i think i devoured at least three dozen of those suckers.

with about ten or so going to the achiote marinated snapper alone, nuff said.

and maybe about a dozen of those pineapple puffs with the mescal cream.

                                          2. Well according to Bill the event is sold out.

                                            Too bad ya'll.

As for meeting the Great and Powerful One, he will be behind a curtain, shoooing away a yapping dog - face stuffed with a Guerrilla Taco.

Ran into Wes from Guerilla Taco fresh from holiday in Costa Rica at the Farmer's Market. His taco sounds amazing. He's going all veggie with mushrooms (morels + others) and some sort of hazelnut "dirt". Sounds incredible.

                                                                1. re: revets2

Break even point is 4 tacos/hour. No problem.

Sounds like a good strategy, but is it like other LAW food events where the pickins' get mighty slim?

Or, in sort of English - if you don't gorge early is there anything left late?

                                                          1. re: JThur01

Last year was pretty good until the last hour. Hoping this year is better...

Still; it was the best food event I've attended < $100.

                                                            1. re: JThur01

Last year if I remember correctly they asked the participants to make 800 portions for 3500 attendees. I think the organizers figured not everyone will hit every spot. Those who did only bring 800 ran out. I think one place ran hour within 2 hours. Some places brought way more, like Soho Taco and La Guerrerense, who were serving until the end. I'd say more than half the participants were able to serve most of the time. Hopefully this year the repeaters will bring more.

how early should you get there? is 3 pm fine?

                                                                1. re: j_gordon

I would say a little before 3p, but not crazy early. Odds are there will be a line to get in (once doors open, it moves fast!), so you want to be there a little early to not be totally in the back of the line. but keep in mind that many of the vendors tend to under estimate the time they need to get ready, so even if you get in RIGHT when they open, not everyone will be ready.

And always go with a plan... if you MUST try a certain vendor, go there FIRST!

Not that I'm going and I hope I'm wrong for the hound's sakes but I just realized something, since a lot of those participants are also at the LA street food festival at the Rose Bowl at the same time, they might not be able to get enough ingredients to split for both events at the same time. Of course if this ends up being true, those that are only at Tacolandia will probably be more prepared and people that show up semi late might not be able to try the places that are double showing at both events.

                                                            2. re: carter

Eh...you have to consider, it probably would be worth it to avoid having to go to Mexico to eat the tacos of La Guerrerense.

I realized they would be there too late though... oh well

                                                            3. Current confirmed:

Interested, but not sure if ticket purchased:

                                                              Looking for Ticket:

Anyone I missed? I seemed to remember Dommy mentioning that she and Mattapoisett in LA wouldn't be able to make it this year, but I can't find where she said that.

Unfortunately this is true. So sorry to miss it!! Although now that GCM is open later, we should plan a Chow Flashmob there one of these days!!!

                                                                  2. Those going: Where/when should we meet?

Even though the line will probably be long there, if their regular line at GCM is any indication, I was thinking that we should meet at Eggslut, since fellow 'hound Johnny L will be working there. How does 4:30 PM sound? That gives us enough time to walk around, try a few things, and then exchange notes when we do meet up.

To help with identification, I plan on wearing my "fooding" shirt, a blue Hawaiian-style* button shirt with line illustrations of tuna fish on it. (*Not loud or colorful, more understated like a Reyn Spooner.)

So, Eggslut at 4:30 PM: How does that sound? Think you'll be there by then, ns1?

                                                                    1. Any hounds need a last minute ticket? My baby sitting just fell through so the wife drew the short straw and gets to stay at home with the kid.
