Any suggestions for Japanese near Film Forum

Looking for suggestions for Japanese (sushi or non sushi or both) near The Film Forum for tonight (Tuesday). GF is a vegetarian so that has to be taken into consideration (so no Takashi). TIA

  1. EN Japanese Brasserie has lots of vegetarian options for your girlfriend.

I considered EN but I heard it is a chain restaurant; is that ture and if so, do you think it "feels" like a chain?

      1. re: Spiritchaser

If "feels" like a chain to you means that the waiter will come up and say, "Hello, I'm Matt and I'll be your server today," -- no. It's a beautiful space and the food is good. Your gf will probably like the freshly made tofu.

There are other Japanese restaurants near the Film Forum that I like such as Soto or Ushiwakamaru. But there aren't as many items your girlfriend can eat.

Thank you. So you like Ushiwakamaru also? It was another place I considered.

I do -- for their sushi. I love that they cut the toro in the way so there are no sinews. Not all sushi restaurants do that as there's more waste. But I think eating a piece of toro with sinews running through it defeats the purpose.

But just glancing at their menu, there aren't too many things your gf can eat except for salad, eggplant, tempura, veggie rolls. If she's happy with that I guess it would be a good choice for you too.

I'm veg and EN has some wonderful tofu, and enough oprtions she won't be stuck with a cucumber roll and seaweed salad....

      2. Blue Ribbon Sushi, but there might be a wait. I wouldn't order the nigiri items, either, but there's lots of other good stuff. And a largeish selection of vegetable maki rolls.

Do you know anything about Blue Ribbon Izakaya? They take reservation so that could be a possibility if you think they are good.

Forget it, I just realised it's too far

I like BR Izakaya a lot, it does get loud, and the food is good, but yeah, it's a bit far from Film Forum.

+ 2, but only if it works for the gf. I had a fantastic dinner (all sushi) at the sushi bar a few months ago - fairly reasonable, too, IIRC. Super friendly service.

          2. rockmeisha is a favorite izakaya of mine. they have a 'tofu steak' covered in cheese and mushrooms that's pretty stoner/vegetarian delicious...amongst other things.

i still havent been there but check fukurou on macdougal for another cooked japanese option.
