My Favorite Restaurant in Photharam, Thailand (so far)

Uncle Daws

This is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in Thailand so far. And speaking of so far, it is so far from Bangkok (about 50 km.) that, unless you are touring or staying in the provinces west of Bangkok, you can forget about just coming here for lunch (8am-4pm) Daws is not open for dinner. It would be, however, the high point of a full day trip from Bangkok during which you could visit some of the many beautiful wats along the way, especially Wat Khanon Nang Yai that houses the Thai shadow puppet museum and have dinner at my second favorite restaurant in Thailand, Grandfathers House (separate posting).
Mr. Daw has been a Thai chef in Macao and Hong Kong and his expertise is shown by the bright and balanced flavors in every dish that we sampled.
Pla Mah Pad Chu Chi (sautéed Horsefish) is a solid but tender, meaty white fish that was perfectly none with a white coconut milk/red curry sauce. The sauce is very mild and quite flavorful. Tod Mon Pla, fish cakes, were delicious and nicely balanced with the essence of Kefir lime leaf. Kai Jeaw, Thai Omelet, is beaten egg fried in very hot oil until it becomes fluffy, bubbly and crispy, just the way Thais like it. It is served with their own very good Sri Racha sauce, not all like the bottled stuff you get in the States. We had a simple plate of stir fried vegetables consisting of cauliflower, sugar pea pods, Chinese broccoli and mushrooms. Very mild flavor compared to the other dishes but each vegetable was perfectly done.
Directions to Uncle Daws: For a point of reference, I am going to assume that you are on highway 4, Phetkasem Rd., heading west toward, or in the vicinity of, Nakhon Pathom. After heading west from Nakhon Pathom, highway 4 turns south toward Potharam. When you see a big green sign over the highway directing you to take the ramp on the left toward highway 3080 toward Photharam, take it. Turn right at the traffic light, go under the bridge. You will now be on highway 3080 heading west toward Photharam. After 5.3 km the roads comes to a ‘T’ and you will bear left. You will now be on highway 3090 running southwest, then west. Drive for about 1.9 km. You will come to a ‘Y’ in the road and you will need to bear right. This keeps you on highway 3090. Drive for 6.4 km and you will come to a roundabout (traffic circle). Circle ¾ of the way around so that you are heading north on highway 3089. In about .8 km you will see the first Uncle Daw’s sign and you will take the turnoff to the left. Follow the paved road for a little bit. It curves left, then bear right .25 km from the turnoff, then go left at the ‘T’ .4 km from the turnoff and you will see the second sign at Uncle Daws parking lot when you are .5 km from the turnoff. Enjoy.
