the best of d.c.

Hi--I would like to give my daughter and her husband some gift certificates for great D.C. restaurants. They like everything--and love Ethiopian. Aside from Founding Farmers, can you suggest a good collection of say, four restaurants, that would make for a great taste of D.C.? Thanks!

on second thought i would replace Daikaya with Great Wall Szechuan or Judy Restaurant

        2. Daikaya
          Ethiopic
          Ted's Bulletin
          Churchkey/Birch & Barley

          1. or if some of these places don't offer gift certificates, then you could front-load a pre-paid credit card and e-mail a list of the suggested places (with embedded hyperlinks to the website menus)

or if I know where folks are going I've had luck calling the place ahead with my cc# and took a leap of faith specifying a generous tip on the end amount. that's what they charged and reports on service were positive.

almost all establishments won't take advantage of that.

I like calling ahead w/ a credit card number and telling them to add a certain percent tip. With a gift card, you can't hit the right amount and I don't want them to be paying anything out of pocket.

Thanks so much to the Chowhound community for all these great recommendations, and for the suggestion of a front-loaded credit card with links to menus. That might be the way to go. And now that my daughter will be living in D.C., I'm looking forward to trying out some of these places myself!
