dishoom [London]

i've now been a few times to the shoreditch branch.

lots of excellent stuff: pau bhaji, kheema, okra fries (especially mmm), mattar paneer, kali dal, the raan and some competently made kebabs like the malai chicken kebabs.

ok, so its not really an irani cafe menu. but the dishes all tasted as if i were in mumbai. i especially loved the lime sprinkled kheema - i have missed you, my old friend.

at this standard, i'll be going back often.

you'll remain feeling happy after eating here (none of that sick greasy after taste to punish you a la tayyabs).

Have you also eaten at the other branch on St. Martin's Lane? I was there when it first opened.. just wondering if they both are equal.. menu the same.

haven't been to the one in covent gardens, but i imagine its just as good.

does the covent garden restaurant also have random hindi phrases painted on the windows, bar etc? amusing, that.

It doesn't have those. But I thought this poster was amusing:

The list of prohibited actions reminded me of a poster I saw in Chennai, Indian, earlier that same year:

To be honest, I can't remember much about the walls other than they were very interesting... lots of posters of Indian films and probably signs and walls. I don't think anythings were on the windows, but maybe that's because of the neighborhood. :-)???

The manager remembered me the second time I returned... a nice, personal touch but I think it was because they were newly opened and not busy on my first visit.

Good to hear. We will be staying in Shoreditch next month and was planning to have a Sunday night dinner there. I will make note of your favorite dishes.

I've eaten at the Covent Garden one twice recently & will return. I loved the comfort-food house black daal especially. The crunchy calamari were tasty too.
