any good restaurants in cote des neiges area near queen mary

  1. Jason of Shut Up and Eat lives in CDN; don't know which part. He did a rundown of some restaurants there recently:

    I'd love to try Tuk Tuk, not too far north of Queen Mary.

    Are you closer to CDN (and Université de Montréal) or Snowdon?

    1. I live in Cote des Neiges.

      I haven't been to Tuk Tuk because I get my Thai needs filled by Chak Wow and, frankly, don't see how Tuk Tuk could be better.

      I can tell you that TK Restobar (Filipino fusion) and Thanjai (Souther Indian) (both near the corner of Victoria and Van Horne) are delicious.

      Also, I enjoy Caribbean Curry House (also Victoria, between Jean Talon and Plamondon).

      Cracovie is very old school Polish but has good food (on Gatineau near Lacombe).

      My husband also really enjoys Pho Lien (across the street from the Jewish General Hospital) and Moonshine Barbecue (on Decarie).

      Finally, I've heard good things about Rayan (also on Cote des Neiges not far from the Jewish) but have never been.

        Silva the Portuguese chicken place on Queen Mary between Decarie and Coolbrook is quite good. Farhat on Cote de Neiges (near the Jewish) for Shish Taouk, although they use sub buns for their sandwiches which I'm not crazy about, does anyone know if they offer pita bread?

        Anyone ever try the African resto on Queen Mary a couple of hundred meters east of Snowdon Metro?

        Tuk Tuk is OK, nothing out of the ordinary but worthy for the area.

          +1 for Farhat. 5595A-B Cote-des-Neiges. I always stop by when I'm in the 'hood. I've never seen them use pita, but they don't really do traditional shish taouk, they have things like lamb heart that you don't normally see (& it's delish).

          There are a bunch of other places on that stretch of CDN where you can get pita shish taouk, such as Kabab Express at 5567A Cote des Neiges.

            Since the OP is asking about the Cote-des-neiges/Queen Mary area, it should be noted that there's a Farhat on Swail just off of Cote-des-neiges.

            Kebab, corner of Swail, is an above average shawarma place.

            Arouch is always a good option.

            I wonder if anyone has had recent experiences at L'Hermitage or La Caverne?

        2. To all of the above, I'd add Gibeau Orange Julep (more for architectural and community prowess than the actual food), Prohibition (more NDG, than Cdn - but close to enough to Queen Mary), and Boulangerie Spicee.

              IMO it means you can skip it unless you want to eat crappy food (generic hotdogs and fries, ... ) and eating it in a parking along side an highway with lot of friendly flying rodent seagulls.

                IMO it means that the community that comes together on the various antique car nights, car washes, etc. is better than the food, which while I wouldn't classify as "generic," is not on par with Uniburger, Mr. Steer, Pataterie Chez Philippe, and other places.

                  Indeed, I was taken there once as a small girl, eons ago. It was impressive somehow (children like big, bright things) but I never had any desire to eat more of their food, which was run of the mill junk food of the era.

                    I liked the orange julep but now that I am lactose intolerant, have to forego it or take the lactaid pills. By the way, i tried to replicate the taste by adding an egg to orange juice and mix it up; it seemed to work. I wonder if that is the same ingredient. (There were orange juleps in malls in western canada and my father once owned shares in one standalone place out there. I wonder if OJ was a chain).

                      The western chain, IIRC, was called Orange Julius. At least it was in Manitoba.

                        Right. You got it. It tasted the same as Orange Julep does here.

                          I dont think it tasted even close. You used to be able to buy Orange Julius juice boxes.. I dont know if you can anymore.

                            I don't think they sell juice boxes, but just about every Dairy Queen is also an Orange Julius franchise.

            2. I recently tried Cracovie for the first time, good stop for home cooked Polish. Soups were really good, pierogies were solid as was the stew wrapped in a potato pancake.

              Staff were super friendly, seems like they get a lot of regulars but they were super nice even to us first timers. Old Polish ladies working in the kitchen is always a good sign.

              It's not groundbreaking but it's Polish food done right. We'll be back.

                Where is it in CDN? Or is it on Queen Mary?
