Vote for May Cookbook of the Month

delys77 Apr 15, 2014 07:53 PM

Yet another busy round of nominations. All tolled we had a total of 11 nominees and some 35 total nominations. In the end we had 3 nominees, all of which were essentially tied for nominations (1 got 8 nominations and the other two received 7 nominations each).

Making yet another return appearance we have The Hakka Cookbook: Chinese Soul Food from Around the World by Linda Anusasananan. As per our friends at Amazon, Ms. Anusasananan's work likens:
"...Hakka cooking to a nomadic type of "soul food," or a hearty cooking tradition that responds to a shared history of hardship and oppression. Earthy, honest, and robust, it reflects the diversity of the estimated 75 million Hakka living in China and greater Asia, and in scattered communities around the world—yet still retains a core flavor and technique. Anusasananan’s deep personal connection to the tradition, together with her extensive experience testing and developing recipes, make this book both an intimate journey of discovery and an exciting introduction to a vibrant cuisine.

Next on our list of nominees is a new entrant into the world of COTM as far as I know. The New Persian Kitchen by Ms. Louisa Shafia "explores her Iranian heritage by reimagining classic Persian recipes from a fresh, vegetable-focused perspective. These vibrant recipes demystify Persian ingredients like rose petals, dried limes, tamarind, and sumac, while offering surprising preparations for familiar foods such as beets, carrots, mint, and yogurt for the busy, health-conscious cook. The nearly eighty recipes—such as Turmeric Chicken with Sumac and Lime, Pomegranate Soup, and ice cream sandwiches made with Saffron Frozen Yogurt and Cardamom Pizzelles—range from starters to stews to sweets, and employ streamlined kitchen techniques and smart preparation tips..."

And last, but not least, the third nominee for this month is My Bombay Kitchen: Traditional and Modern Parsi Home Cooking by Niloufer Ichaporia King and Alice Waters. This tome I believe has come up in past nominations but I believe this is the first time it has made it to the voting thread. Online reviews promise that these "...recipes .... should prove revelatory even for home cooks used to whipping up a biryani at a moment's notice. Though it shares similarities with other subcontinental cuisines-a reliance on ghee, a taste for curry, a deep affection for vegetables-Parsi food is unique in many ways, hinting at its Persian ancestry with ample use of eggs, while nodding toward Europe through savory custards and rich desserts. Many recipes are both unusual and deeply comforting: onions, young garlic, and leeks turn rich and buttery in an Allium Confit, and Braised Greens, spiked with cayenne, are vegetables gone to heaven. Cauliflower, eggs and grated cheese take a decadent turn in Mother's Wobbly Caulfilower Custard."

There we have it folks, I dare say we have an embarrassment of riches with these three lovely books. I'm sure whichever wins out shall have us all inspired for the month May.

Thanks Delys. Wow, three really interesting books this month. Going to take some time to think. I'm a bit torn.

Thanks, Delys, for another good round of nominations and an excellent write up of the nominees. An embarrassment of riches is right. What a choice! I'd be happy cooking from any of these.

I own Hakka and should be getting The New Persian Kitchen soon from my library. But they don't have My Bombay Kitchen, so I'm in a similar boat.

Really cannot go wrong - all three choices sound interesting. I'm also waiting to see if my local library has any of these titles.

I really hope My Bombay Kitchen wins so I'll have an excuse to add it to my shelves!
