  1. Not a traditional German Chocolate cake, but the chocolate layered cake (Couronne du Chocolat) at Lady M in my opinion will make any German Chocolate cake devotee an infidel.

The thing is that German Chocolate Cake is a specific preference - for a silky textured not very chocolately cake and the coconut-nut filling and frosting

Many bakers dont get this and make the layers with dark chocolate and put a chocolate frosting on.

That Couronne looks good but its a totally different thing and is not going to convert any GCC lover.

ps. the Billy's looks traditional but without tasting the cake could not be sure.

    2. Billy's makes a good one.

      1. Is this with or without sauerkruat?

        1. The best is the one my mom makes....! But she's on the other side of the country and doesn't ship ;)
The slice (or whole cake!) at buttercup bakery is quite good. Call before you go since sometimes they run out. And somehow its much better as the cake slice vs their cupcake.

I haven't tried the one at clinton st baking co (dinner dessert menu) but their "chocolate caramel frosting" sounds like creative license:
