Fifty South (Ballston Spa)

Now that Strata has closed there are few dinner options in Ballston Spa. We drove by Villago (Ballston Lake) and it was too crowded to attempt. We didn't want to go to S. Springs. SO suggested Three Olives, I suggested The Crazy Cow. We compromised and headed to Fifty South aka Kim Klopstock's Fifty South.

Like the focus on sourcing ingredients locally.

For those who are vegan, vegetarian, have Celiac disease (about 1% of the American population), gluten sensitivity or are gluten free just because it makes them feel better, this might be the place for you.

We started with spicy fried calamari, topped with shredded parmesan cheese (don't care for the combo of seafood and dairy) with sweet thai chili sauce. It was cooked perfectly. Not overcooked or breaded. It was spicy for the masses. Didn't really notice the hot peppers or garlic. We would have liked it to be spicier. Very good.

SO had the poached pear salad. Local farm greens, poached pear, chevre, dried cranberries, sugared pecans, and house made maple vinaigrette. I tasted everything but the pears and it was very good.

I had a demi portion (appreciate the choice of large or smaller portions) of the salmon on mashed potatoes with wasabi cream and topped with steamed spinach. Salmon was cooked perfectly, though they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked. Very good. Would definitely get again.

SO had tuna martini with his salad. He didn't care for it. I tasted it. Meh, nothing special.

Service was very good. Good place for a casual dinner. Though, eating healthy (organic, etc.) doesn't come at a casual price. Sometimes they have live entertainment.

  1. FDR, I just saw a reference to the Crazy Cow on Yelp indicating they were closed. I called the phone number on their web page and it said the number was not in service!! But someone gave it a decent review as of Friday, 4/11.

Roger K, say it isn't so . . .such nice people, really good food, HORRIBLE location.

If they were on Front Street near The Iron Roost and The Whistling Kettle it might have been better for their business.

That's two really good B. Spa restaurants closed in about a year.
