Do you like cucumber water?

I can't stand it. To me it's like drinking used mouthwash spit out into a cup.

And I say that as a self-avowed cucumber lover, and yes I am well-aware of its supposed health benefits.

  1. I like it, if it is fresh and COLD.

Better with a spritz of lemon and lots of ice...okay....and a shot of gin.

Well, if you put it that way, then I guess mouthwash would be good as well.

Well...I could see Colgate as a mock mojito....

    2. No. But I also don't like cucumbers, so there you go.

      1. >>>To me it's like drinking used mouthwash spit out into a cup<<<

Are you speaking from experience and if so, why did you drink used mouthwash that was spit into a cup in the first place?

It was that or share a toothbrush.

            Dang Ipse -

We've got to get you to meet new folks.

            Or carry your own toothbrush!

        2. Never had it, either the garden or ocean variety. But I can easily scoff down a cuke with balsamic vinaigrette.

Seriously? Have you never been to a trendy spa? Cucumber water is de rigueur.
But, i admit, it is difficult to sneak in a flask to make it palatable, when you are naked.

            1. re: sedimental

I'm too old for the trendy spa circuit. I bench press old car engines in the privacy of my garage.

          2. A fancy old hotel we stayed at had big urns of iced cucumber water in the lobby when we came back from a summer day's walk about town. It was refreshing and delicious.
            I'd drink it again.

The spa at our local grand old hotel has chilled water with very thin slices of cucumber and orange. It's one of the best things I've ever had, and just thinking about it makes me excited for summer!

              1. re: iL Divo

Me too, nothing as refreshing on a hot day.

              2. i'll gladly drink unsparkling water, anywhere, if it has some cukes in it. utterly refreshing.

                1. I love it - tastes and smells so refreshing. Water infused with pineapple and mint is great, too.

I've seen those things - and cucumbers - floating in water coolers in various hotel lobbies.

                  2. Not really. I love cucumbers and pickles, though.

The other day I visited my hair salon and availed myself of the fancy glass thingie of lemon water that they have in the reception area in warm weather. Some genius decided to add cucumber this year. NOT an improvement, IMO.

                    1. From what I hear, it's a great remedy for coke hangovers.

That said, I prefer my cucumbers without water and my water without cukes.

                      1. Add some cut up cantaloupe or honeydew and it's even better!

Used mouthwash? That's pretty desperate....there's always the toothpaste straight in the mouth, rubbed over teeth and then a gargle of water instead. Maybe for next time?

                        1. I like cucumber water - I find it refreshing. I also like lemon water and orange water. I take a Nalgene bottle of water with me to work, and many days I'll add cucumber, lemon slices, mint, or sliced ginger (or some combination of those) to it to to change it up.

I never thought of adding ginger! Thanks for the great idea!

                          2. I like to eat cucumber, but hate, no, absolutely loathe it in waters, juices, and especially in cocktails!

For me it goes back to Bemmelman's bar in NYC. I visited there before a best friends wedding almost a decade ago, to fortify myself before a long Catholic Mass. The elderly bartender made a cocktail for me that I later found out was supposed to have 1/8 tsp. of cucumber juice in it. But he used 1 oz. It tasted terrible, and I was burping cucumber non-stop for the next few hours as I made it through an uncomfortably hot wedding, and a crazy drive upstate trying to find the reception hall.

                            1. Sadly, I am not a fan of any type of water. I have tried all the combinations with fruit and spices and it does not make it more palatable to me. I just posted about this in the foods without enemies thread. I want to like water...I suffer from anemia so I do eat a few cups of ice a day, wish I craved water that way.

I have disdain for any of the "Water and vitamin, cucumber, etc..." combinations (seems to be part of that unfortunate American propensity for making everything natural "new and improved") but tried the one with cucumber because a friend had an extra one, but it didn't convert me into a "fan." Wasn't absolutely nauseating but was distasteful. I love drinking fresh water, and have nothing against cucumbers per se (I don't seek them out but will eat them readily enough if they're in a salad, on a sandwich, etc.), but the combination was...distasteful. Maybe "healthy" (although by drinking water and eating fruit I think you accomplish the same thing, no?) but not refreshing or tasty. Not something I'll ever have again.

                                1. re: legsdiamond12

Was that a bottle of cucumber flavored water? I don't think I'd like that. I have only had fresh iced water with cucumber slices in the urn.

                              2. I had it warm, and it was disgusting. I felt nauseous right afterwards...but it could've been the rest of the meal too (I was in Banda Aceh). Cold has been no better.

Mix it with something, it has a chance, but alone, no dice.

                                  "Warm cucumber water"

Just typing those words made me up chuck my lunch a little bit.

                                  1. re: ipsedixit

Yep, it is tied "for first" with a durian shake and mesquite plum soda.

                                2. I don't mind cucumber water when I am at a spa type place but prefer citrus waters. Canyon Ranch has lemon water through out the place and it's so refreshing.

A spa in Napa would deliver pitchers of cucumber water, citrus water made with lemons and oranges as well as minted water as you sat by the pool. I really enjoy it and again very refreshing!

I never have cucumber water at home but do offer lemon water when I host brunch.

                                  1. I had no idea there were supposed health benefits. I just love it. Find it very refreshing. Have been drinking it since I was a kid.

                                    1. No, I don't like cucumbers and I get especially annoyed when a place offers me water, and then it's cucumber water.

                                      1. Nope, not a fan. I do love cucumber juice though from the juicer. YUM!

                                        1. Question for those who like cucumber water.

Do you ever ask for a slice of cucumber in your ice water at restaurants the way some people do with lemon?

If you have, what's been the response? I am really dying to know.

In fact, I'm so curious, I might try this tomorrow at dinner.

Why would you do that if you hate it so much? Plain masochism?

                                            1. re: ipsedixit

Cant say about cukes but everyplace I have been are happy to add lemon or limes.

But why do you care since you hate it so much?

                                              1. re: ipsedixit

No, I haven't asked for cucumber slices at a restaurant, but after reading about all the nasty bacteria on the lemon wedges, I just may try it!

                                                1. re: kitchengardengal

Would you mind reporting back with the response you get?

I'm just curious whether cucumber water has gone mainstream the way lemon slices/wedges in water have.

                                                2. re: ipsedixit

No, because it's easy enough to grab lemon from the bar. Some bars will have it for some drinks, but not always. Not all restaurants will have cucumber handy and if they do, I'm not about to make a server go into the kitchen for a garnish for my water.

                                                3. The only cucumber water I've had is the cucumber mint at Tiara Cafe downtown.

                                                  I love it.

Maybe because by the time I have it, I've been walking and rag picking for hours.... But my hubby had it too, on a restful day, and really enjoyed it.

So maybe not all cucumber water is bad. Just some. : )

                                                  1. Yes, very much. I try to always keep a pitcher of water with cucumer and lemon or lime in the fridge.

                                                    1. Love it. It's one of the reasons I grow cucumbers. I also like it with ginger, lemon or lime and mint. I live in a very warm climate and find it really does the trick on a hot day.
